CHAPTER THIRTY-SIX

Sunlight woke me slowly as it poured into my bedroom. My eyes fluttered as my dreams slowly evaporated and I let out a soft hum, warm and cozy.

Hunter’s arm was around me, his breathing soft. I smiled to myself and wiggled my toes, ready to start my day while also wanting to remain next to him.

His arms slowly moved around me and he let out a soft groan. “I’m not ready.”

I snorted. “I thought you were still sleeping.”

“I wake up at like 6 a.m. every day.”

I slowly rolled over and craned my head back to look at him. His eyes were still closed, but he was smiling. He slowly opened one eye to look at me.

“How’s your ass?” I asked.

He snorted and shook his head, letting out another dramatic groan that had me giggling. He rolled onto his back and I moved on top of him, sitting on his hips and resting on his chest.

“A little sore,” he grunted. “Manageable. Worth it.”

“Good,” I said. “I’ll be thinking about last night forever.”

“Me too.” He tangled his fingers in my hair and started to massage the back of my head. I let out a groan and closed my eyes, relaxing into him.

“Mm. If you keep doing this…” I trailed off as I felt his cock harden against me.

“What’ll happen?” he whispered, his tone teasing me.

“Fuck.” I could barely think as he kept massaging my head.

“You make such pretty noises for me, sparks.”

“ Mmph. ”

“I’ve got some time before I need to go pick up RK,” he said softly.

I pushed my hips back, meeting his cock with my pussy. We’d both slept naked and every touch was turning me on. His fingers went from massaging my head to gripping my hair, and I gasped as he gave me a tug.

“Get on my cock,” he grunted.

“Yes, sir,” I rasped.

I reached down between us, moving the head of his cock inside of me. We sighed together as I sank back, taking the first couple of inches, and then sitting back more. Hunter dragged my mouth down into a kiss as I began to move my hips, grinding up and down on his cock.

A muffled curse was lost between our lips as I kissed him deeper, pleasure electrifying my entire body. I whimpered as I took more of him, every stroke going deeper until I was taking every inch with each motion.

He kept one hand knotted in my hair, the other on my hips as I rode him.

“Good girl,” he rasped. “Fuck, you’re taking me so well.”

“I am.” I felt a streak of pride mixed with euphoric lust. I loved it when he praised me for taking his cock. I loved it when he let me take some control while still dominating me.

His hips met me in a thrust this time and I gasped, leaning forward. He caught my breast in his mouth, sucking my nipple as he pumped up. I threw my head back on a long groan, my hips moving faster.

“I’m so close,” I rasped.

All he could do was grunt. Both his hands held my hips as he fucked me harder, driving me to the edge. My cry echoed through the bedroom, sunlight dripping over us as I came. He kept fucking me through the waves of pleasure, every muscle tensing.

“Fuck,” he grunted.

I felt the rush of his cum inside me, his hips jerking. I panted as I collapsed against him, his arms circling me. He kissed me gently before relaxing into the bed.

“Good morning,” he chuckled.

I grinned against his chest. “Good morning.”

It was the perfect morning. We laid like that for a few minutes before he let out a soft sigh.

“I’ve gotta run to the vet,” he said.

“I have to pick up Donnie, but then we can stop by to meet RK,” I said.

“Good. I want to show you all the things I bought for him to see if you approve.”

“I’m sure it’s all perfect.”

He kissed the top of my head and then we slowly pulled apart. “Let’s shower,” he said.

“You just want to see me naked and wet.”

“Obviously.”

He gave my ass a spank as we made our way to the bathroom. I flipped on the hot water and we crammed inside, his arms caging me against the tile wall as he kissed me again.

I patted his chest. “If you keep distracting us, you’ll be late.”

Hunter sighed. “Okay, okay. We’ll pick up our children and then resume this later.”

I snorted at the thought of Donnie and RK being our children. He kissed me one more time before we got busy, scrubbing ourselves clean.

Within half an hour, I was making a cup of coffee and Hunter was about to head out the door. My hair was wrapped in a towel and I was naked, while he was fully dressed and clearly torn between staying and going.

“I’ll see you later,” I said.

He leaned in to murmur against my ear. “I love you.”

I grinned. “I love you too.”

One more kiss and then I watched as he went out the front door.

For the first time, I felt the blanket of contentment I’d been craving for so long.

I carried my coffee back upstairs and flopped down on my bed. I looked over at the indention in the blankets from Hunter’s big body, and smiled.

My phone rattled on the dresser as a call came in. I took a sip of coffee and reached over, hanging off part of the bed as I answered. “Hello?”

“Ms. Madden? This is Nathan, your father’s lawyer.”

“Oh.” My eyes widened and I put my coffee down immediately. “Hi. I’ve been meaning to email you.”

“I’ve been meaning to get ahold of you, I apologize for taking so long. There’s been a lot happening. Ms. Madden, I’m reaching out to you for several reasons, but the most pressing one is regards to your ex-husband, Joshua Martin. He is suspected to be behind the death of Michael Madden.”

“What?” I whispered. The world froze around me. My heart hammered as I swallowed hard. “I… Okay. Can you tell me more?”

“Yes. A homicide investigation has been launched, and Joshua Martin is considered to be a person of interest. He might be behind the death of your father.”

I winced. What the fuck was happening? “They think Josh killed him?”

“Yes. They do. Have you heard from him or seen him?” Nathan asked.

“Yes,” I said immediately. “He’s here in Citrus Cove. He showed up about three weeks ago and told me my father died. He tried to convince me to remarry him and sell the company to him. Obviously, I told him no. He also broke into my fiancé’s house and attempted to run him off the road.”

I stood up to grab a robe from the bathroom, sliding it onto my shoulders.

“Ms. Madden, did you go to the police about this?”

“I didn’t. I should have, but it’s been a stressful few weeks. I can reach out to them now,” I said. Fuck. Why had I been so stupid? I should have done that. My eyes watered as I rushed downstairs to my front door, immediately twisting the lock.

I needed to text Hunter. I knew he was just going to pick up RK, but now I was nervous.

Nathan cleared his throat and then continued. “Please reach out to them immediately after this conversation if you’re able to. I’ll contact the investigator and let them know Josh has been seen in Citrus Cove. I would heavily caution you to stay indoors and away from him. If he approaches you, do not engage and call the police.”

“I can do that,” I said. Shock and rage combined into an overwhelming tonic. “Why didn’t anyone call me when my dad died?”

“Your stepmother was supposed to. Did she not? She told us you refused to come to California.”

“That’s not true,” I said immediately. “That’s not true at all. No one called me. I didn’t know about his death until Josh showed up here.”

“That’s concerning.” Nathan let out a low hum. “The entire estate and company was inherited by you. As his executor, I apologize it’s taken so long to reach out to you. I filed the court documents, but with the investigation, there have been more matters to take care of. I’ll be booking a flight to Austin this week so we can meet in person and get everything situated.”

“Did my stepmom get anything?” I asked.

Nathan let out a sigh. “Your father left her with a small amount to live on. She was under the impression that she would receive more. She was not happy.”

“Do you…” I trailed off. It was unthinkable, and yet I was going to ask anyway. “Do you think she could have worked with Josh to kill my father?”

“I’m unsure,” he said. “I’d like to believe the best, but it’s a possibility.”

“How did he die? She wouldn’t tell me. We spoke briefly on the phone a few days ago, but that was the first time I’d heard from her in ages.”

“He was found in his office with pills and a letter. He appeared to have overdosed, but after further investigation, the medication that killed him was not prescribed to him. It was prescribed to Joshua.”

I shook my head and went back up the stairs. I put the phone on speaker and started to get dressed. “My dad was not the type to do something like that,” I said bitterly. “Any time he was sick or injured, it was a battle to get him to even see a doctor. I know we hadn’t spoken in years, but that just doesn’t sound like him.”

“I agree.” I could hear Nathan typing away in the background. “I’ve just asked my assistant to book my flight. I’ll be there as soon as I can. In the meantime, I think contacting the police and getting somewhere safe is wise.”

“I’ll do that,” I said. “I have people I can stay with.”

Hunter would keep me safe.

“I’ll be in touch.”

“Thanks,” I said.

The call ended, and I placed my hands on my head as my breaths turned rapid.

That son of a bitch. I’d always known he was awful, but this? I was in shock. This was heinous, even for him. I squeezed my eyes shut as I tried to process the information.

Hunter.

I grabbed my phone and called him. It rang and rang until it went to voicemail.

“Hey,” I said, my voice trembling. “Please call me back immediately. The lawyer just called me about Josh. They think he killed my dad.”
