14. The Confrontation #2

“Neutralize attorney interference through reputational compromise.”

The room goes quiet.

Harmony stares at the screen, her face still as the wording confirms what she already knew. They didn’t stumble onto her while protecting another operation. They selected her, studied her, and built the frame because she refused to stop asking questions.

I move to stand beside her. She doesn’t look away from the evidence.

“Can we prove the order came from the family?”

“Not from this message alone,” Shane says. “But Ruiz’s archive connects the payments, the fixer network, the compromised agents, and the accounts controlled by Westbrook entities.”

Faith shares a second document.

“These codes link the transactions directly to the family office. We’re beyond shell-company proximity now.”

Victor appears on the secure screen from San Francisco.

“How complete?”

Shane looks around the table before answering.

“Enough to document the frame against Harmony from instruction to execution. Enough to connect the Westbrooks to disappearances across the border. Enough to establish Ruiz wasn’t acting independently.”

“And the wider operation?” Victor asks.

G opens the recovered directory.

Dozens of names fill the screen, followed by account numbers, border locations, contractor payments, and case references stretching back years.

“This gives us the structure,” he says. “Fixers, financial channels, compromised officials, and targets.”

Harmony reaches for my hand.

The Westbrooks are no longer a name on a board or a family hidden behind banks and foundations. Their methods are documented in their own records, tied to real victims and the people paid to silence them.

Victor studies the screen.

“One Legacy family fully mapped.”

Steve folds his arms.

“Then tomorrow we take it home.”

The team begins duplicating the files for transport, building three encrypted copies and separating them from the physical evidence. Jaxon prepares the legal transfer package. Shane updates the master dossier. Faith starts tracing every account Ruiz carried with him.

Across the table, Harmony places her dismissal order beside the documents used to frame her.

They tried to erase her with fabricated evidence.

Instead, they gave HAVEN the records needed to expose the family behind it.

The New Mexico safe house, west of Las Cruces, New Mexico. 0035 hours.

The safe house is busy during the early hours.

Most of the work is still happening around the dining table where Shane, Jaxon, Steve, and the others continue building the case against the Westbrooks. Every recovered file has been copied, cataloged, and cross-checked before anyone thinks about sleep.

Another Legacy family. Another piece of the empire exposed.

I pause in the hallway before joining them. My fingers find the small gold cross beneath my shirt. My grandfather wore it every day of his life. When he died, my grandmother placed it in my hand.

“For those who can't fight anymore,” she'd whispered.

I close my hand around it, feeling the warmth left by my own skin.

“Por los que no pueden pelear,” I murmur.

For those who can't fight.

Steve looks up from the dining table.

“You all right?”

I nod.

“The evidence made it.”

“It did.”

“And Ruiz?”

“He'll spend tonight answering questions instead of making phone calls.”

Steve studies me for another second.

“He got under your skin.”

“He tried.”

Steve's expression softens.

“Then don't give him free rent in your head.”

A corner of my mouth lifts.

“I'll work on it.”

He nods once and returns to the evidence spread across the table.

I turn toward the bedrooms.

Harmony is waiting in the doorway before I can knock. One look at me is all it takes.

She reaches for my hand without a word and leads me inside, closing the door behind us.

The sounds of the investigation fade into the background.

She rests her palm against my face.

“You walked away.”

“I almost didn't.”

“I know.”

Her thumb brushes my jaw where Ruiz's punch landed.

“I'm proud of you.”

The words settle deeper than I expect.

“I wanted him to hurt.”

“You chose something better.”

I lower my forehead to hers.

“He talked about my grandfather.”

“Of course.”

“He wanted me to become exactly who he thinks I am.”

Her fingers lace through mine.

“You didn't.”

“No.”

“You became the man your grandfather would recognize.”

I close my eyes.

Since the confrontation, the anger begins to loosen its grip.

Before I can take another breath, her hands are in my hair, pulling my face down to hers. Her lips meet mine with a desperate, hungry heat that burns away the last lingering shadows of the evening.

She works at the buttons of my shirt with trembling urgency, tugging the heavy fabric over my shoulders until it drops to the floor. I match her pace, my fingers finding the hem of her sweater and lifting it over her head, then reaching around to unhook her bra.

When her bare skin presses against my chest, I lower my head and kiss along her throat.

She steps back just enough to pull me toward the bed, her eyes dark with fierce desire.

She settles on the mattress and pulls me down on top of her, her legs framing my hips as she catches my face between her hands.

“I need you now, Rafael.”

“You have me, querida,” I whisper against her mouth.

I guide myself inside her and press forward, sliding smoothly into her tight, liquid warmth.

A sharp gasp breaks from her lips as I sink in all the way, filling her completely.

I hold still for one long second, letting our bodies adjust to the sudden closeness before setting a steady, deliberate rhythm.

Her hips lift to meet every thrust, her hands gripping my arms, her nails digging into my skin as the tempo builds. I drive into her deeper, faster, watching the flush spread across her chest and throat.

She arches her back, her breathing coming in ragged hitches until the tension in her body snaps. A muffled cry breaks against my chest as she stiffens in a wave of release.

Before the tremors finish rippling through her, I roll onto my back, sweeping her up with me so she lands astride my hips. She sits up, her long dark hair falling over her shoulders and framing her bare breasts like a mermaid rising from the water.

I reach up to cup the weight of her breasts in my hands, my thumbs tracing slow, deliberate circles over her dark nipples until they harden against my palms. Sliding one hand lower, my thumb finds the swollen heat of her clit, slick and trembling beneath my touch.

She arches into the contact, a soft moan escaping her lips as she grinds her hips against mine, taking control of the rhythm.

I grip her hips, guiding her downward as she rides me, matching every arch of her spine with a rising thrust from below. Her head falls back, her breath catching in her throat as the friction spirals tighter between us.

“Rafael,” she gasps, on the edge.

I lift my hips to meet her final, frantic push, driving deep as the pleasure shatters through both of us at once, locking us together in a breathless, silent crescendo.

Much later, the room is silent except for the slow rhythm of our breathing.

Harmony lies against me, tracing absent circles across my chest while the desert night settles outside the window.

The rage that followed me back from the border crossing is gone.

In its place is something steadier.

Hope.

I kiss the top of her head.

“I walked away from a man who called my grandfather a slave and my people cattle.”

She lifts her head and looks at me.

“I came home to a woman who called me by my name in the dark.”

My fingers tighten gently around hers.

“You reminded me what I was fighting for.”

I brush another kiss across her forehead.

“And what I'm fighting to become.”
