he team picks club Halo to celebrate the win, and I'm
obligated to be there even though standing for long periods
has become very painful since the match. The club sits two
blocks off the river in one of the city's countless converted
warehouse spaces. It's all exposed brick, string lights, and a menu
that takes itself far too seriously for a sports bar. It's been the
unofficial team hangout since before I signed, a place where the
bartenders know better than to comp our drinks in front of the
sponsors watching, yet always find a way to take care of us anyway.
Halo on a Saturday after a win is the same scene it's been since
I was twenty-two—low lights, a booth in the back that the club
practically owns at this point, Jamie by the bar, three drinks in and
