Chapter 11 #2
“Yeah,” James replied, his tone light, though something lingered beneath the surface. He hesitated, watching her take a step toward her room. Then, before he could stop himself, he spoke. “You enjoyed this?”
Evie froze mid-step, turning slowly to look at him. “What?”
He smiled faintly, leaning casually against the back of the couch. “Tonight. You enjoyed it?” he asked, his voice quieter now, more serious.
Her lips curved into a small smile, her eyes softening. “Yeah. I did.”
“Me too,” James admitted, his voice dropping almost to a whisper.
Evie’s smile faltered slightly, something about the way he said it making her pulse quicken. She took a step closer, tilting her head. “What did you say?”
James straightened, his eyes locking onto hers as he hesitated for a moment, the silence between them thick and charged. Then, as if the words were too heavy to hold back any longer, he whispered, “I mean it.”
Evie blinked, her chest tightening. “You mean what?”
Another beat of silence passed, and James swallowed hard, his gaze never leaving hers. “I’m falling in love with you,” he said, his voice raw, vulnerable, and utterly unguarded.
The room seemed to stand still, the weight of his confession settling around them like a warm, fragile blanket. Evie’s breath hitched, her lips parting slightly as she stared at him, her mind racing.
“James…” she began, but she couldn’t find the words.
He gave her a small, almost bittersweet smile. “You don’t have to say anything,” he said softly, his hands falling loosely to his sides. “I just… I needed you to know.”
James hesitated for a moment, but then something shifted in his expression. He stepped closer to her, closing the distance between them with slow, deliberate movements. Evie’s breath caught as his presence enveloped her, his warmth brushing against her skin.
His hand came up gently, his fingers grazing her chin as he tilted her face toward his. His touch was soft, careful, as if she might pull away. But she didn’t. Instead, she held his gaze, her heart pounding as the intensity in his eyes made it impossible to look away.
“I just needed you to know,” he repeated softly, his voice low and raw, the words carrying all the weight of his confession.
“I think I'm in love with you,”
And then he kissed her.
It was tentative at first like he was testing the waters, giving her a chance to stop him if she wanted. But when she didn’t when her lips softened against his and her hands instinctively moved to rest against his chest, the kiss deepened.
It wasn’t rushed or frantic, but there was a heat to it, a simmering desire that neither of them could ignore. James tried to keep it sweet, tried to savor the moment, but when Evie’s fingers curled into the fabric of his shirt and she pulled him closer, everything else fell away.
James pulled back slowly, his forehead brushing hers for a moment as he steadied his breath. His hand lingered on her cheek, his thumb grazing her skin one last time before he stepped back. His eyes softened, a mix of emotions swirling in them as he murmured, “Goodnight, Evie.”
He began to turn, but her soft voice stopped him in his tracks. “James…” she whispered, her tone barely audible, trembling but resolute.
He looked back at her, his heart stuttering in his chest. “Yeah?”
She hesitated for only a second before asking, her voice tender but bold, “Do you want to come to my room?”
His breath hitched, the question hanging in the air between them.
“Are you sure?” he asked quietly, his gaze searching hers, his voice laced with equal parts hope and caution.
Evie nodded, her eyes steady on his, her heart pounding as she reached for his hand.
“Yes,” she whispered. “I’m sure.”
James let her take his hand, his fingers curling around hers as she turned and led him down the hallway. Each step felt weighted with anticipation, the quiet hum of the house amplifying the moment.
When they reached her room, she pushed the door open gently, stepping inside. James followed, his movements careful, as though he couldn’t quite believe this was real. The soft light from her bedside lamp cast a warm glow over the space, making it feel intimate, almost otherworldly.
He closed the door behind them with a quiet click, his eyes never leaving hers. The sound seemed to echo in the stillness, making the rest of the world vanish entirely. It was just them now, in this moment, with nothing left to hide and nothing standing between them.
James stood there for a moment, the weight of the door clicking shut behind him, grounding him in the reality of what was happening. He took a step closer to her, the space between them vanishing as his hand came up to gently cup her face, his thumb brushing over her cheek.
Evie looked up at him, her breath shallow, her heart pounding so loudly she was sure he could hear it. He leaned in slowly, giving her every chance to pull away, but when her eyes fluttered shut and she tilted her head toward him, he captured her lips in a kiss.
It wasn’t like before. It wasn’t hurried or born of tension.
This was different—slower, deeper, as though they were finally laying bare all the things they’d kept hidden.
There was hunger, yes, but it wasn’t frantic.
It was deliberate, reverent like each movement was meant to convey something words couldn’t.
His hands found her waist, pulling her closer as the kiss deepened.
Evie’s fingers curled into his shirt, holding onto him as though letting go would break the fragile honesty that bound them in this moment.
When his lips left hers, trailing softly down her jaw and to her neck, she let out a quiet sigh, her head tilting to give him better access.
“Evie,” he murmured, her name rough and full of meaning as it slipped from his lips.
She didn’t respond with words, but her hands slid up to his face, guiding him back to her lips. This time, the kiss was slower still, a silent confession passed between them.
James eased her onto the bed, his movements careful and unhurried, his weight settling just enough to press her into the mattress. He hovered over her, his eyes searching hers as though asking one last time if this was what she wanted.
She answered him with a kiss, pulling him closer, her hands sliding to the back of his neck.
His body melted against hers, and as his lips found hers again, the world outside faded to nothing.
There was no pretense, no act—just the raw, unfiltered truth of what they were to each other in this moment.
Every touch, every kiss felt like an unspoken promise, something honest and real in a way neither of them had expected, but both had craved for far longer than they’d dared admit.
James’s lips trailed down from her mouth, moving with deliberate slowness along her jawline and down her neck. Each press of his lips left a warm, tingling trail in their wake, and when he reached the hollow of her throat, he paused, his breath hot against her skin.
Evie gasped softly as he nibbled at the delicate curve of her neck, his teeth grazing her skin just enough to send shivers coursing through her body.
His tongue followed, soothing where his teeth had teased, and the sensation made her arch slightly beneath him, her fingers clutching at his shoulders.
His lips curved into the faintest smirk against her skin, and he continued his descent, his kisses trailing lower, brushing along the curve of her collarbone. He took his time, tasting her skin, each kiss and nibble more deliberate than the last.
Her breaths came faster, her chest rising and falling as his hands moved, sliding up her sides with a tenderness that contrasted the intensity of his lips.
His palms found their way to her chest, cupping her through the soft fabric of her dress. His thumbs grazed over her, eliciting another gasp that made him pause, his lips hovering over her skin as though savoring the sound.
“You’re incredible,” he murmured against her, his voice low and rough, filled with a mix of reverence and desire.
Evie’s head tilted back against the pillows, her fingers threading through his hair as he dipped lower, his lips brushing against the edge of her neckline. She could feel the heat of him everywhere, the way his touch seemed to both ground her and set her aflame all at once.
Every kiss, every touch, every whispered breath felt like a language only the two of them understood—a quiet, unspoken acknowledgment of how much they’d been holding back and how impossible it was to do so any longer.
James kissed his way down her body, his movements unhurried, as though he wanted to savor every inch of her. His lips trailed lower, leaving a warm, tingling path over her stomach and down to her hip. He paused, glancing up at her, his dark eyes locking with hers.
He removed his shirt slowly, putting on a show for her. And then his belt, and then his pants, and then his erection was out for her to see.
