Chapter 38
As I stepped out of Maya's house that evening, I turned back one last time.
She was standing at the doorway, arms crossed, trying so hard to look annoyed. But her flushed cheeks gave her away.
I leaned a little closer and whispered with a crooked smile,
"Goodnight, Mrs. Khadoos."
She gasped, eyes widening. "Rudra!" she hissed, scandalized.
I chuckled lowly and walked off, feeling far too smug. That blush on her face? Worth every second of teasing.
Next Morning I woke up simba by my side.
Same routine. Wake up early, black coffee, Simba licking my face like an alarm clock with fur, and then the calm drive through the city streets to university.
But today felt different.
Not because anything had changed...
But because now, she had officially become mine.
FiancΓ©e.
Future Mrs. Khadoosβthough she'd probably hit me with a notebook if I said that out loud again.
I reached the university and walked through the corridor with the same calculated steps. The staff greeted me cautiously like alwaysβno change there. Students lowered their voices when they saw meβstill the same fear in their eyes.
But when I entered the lecture hall, I spotted her.
My little furball.
Front row. Chin resting on her palm. Pretending to be uninterested.
I smirked and walked to the desk, placing my file down deliberately. Her eyes flicked to me and back to her notebook, but her ears turned pink.
I leaned just slightly toward her side and murmured,
"Mrs. Khadoos, I hope you finished the assignment."
She flinched, straightened up instantly and shot me a silent glare. "Rudra," she whispered under her breath, "we're in class!"
I straightened like nothing happened and spoke louder to the rest of the class.
"Those who didn't finish the work will stay back. And some of you might get personal tutoringβwhether you like it or not."
My eyes didn't leave hers.
She narrowed them.
I bit back a grin.
Let the chaos begin.
The lecture began.
"Open page 134," I said, keeping my voice firm and neutral. "Today, we'll start with Integration."
The usual groans echoed around the roomβexcept for one.
Maya Raichand aka my soon to be wife?
She sat in the third row, head down, furiously scribbling notes like I wasn't standing right there, watching her every move.
Cute.
Her shoulders stiffened the moment I walked toward her desk, my footsteps slow, deliberate. I leaned just enough to glance at her notebook, keeping my voice low.
"She's paying attention today."
She didn't look up. "Trying to survive, Sir."
I smirked. "You mean thrive, Mrs. Khadoos."
She flinched slightly but didn't reply. Just tightened her grip on her pen and continued writing.
I straightened, suppressing the grin tugging at my lips as I moved to the board. "Let's see who's actually paying attention today. Maya Raichandβsolve the first problem."
She stood up, shooting me a glare sharp enough to slice through stone, then snatched the chalk and began writing. Her eyes met mine briefly, defiant and fire-filled.
God, I loved this woman.
Of course, she solved the problem with precision.
"Very good," I said, voice calm, but my eyes said otherwise. "I suppose some people really do blossom under the pressure of... commitment."
I saw the exact second she blushedβand tried to hide it.
"Sit down, Miss Raichand."
She slammed the chalk down, cheeks still pink as she returned to her seat, refusing to glance my way for the rest of the lecture.
After class ended, she bolted toward the exitβbut I moved fast, blocking her path effortlessly.
"Leaving already, Mrs. Khadoos?" I asked casually, leaning against the doorframe.
She narrowed her eyes at me, arms folded. "You're insufferable."
"And yet, you agreed to marry me," I said, stepping closer. "Which means you're either brave or foolishly in love."
Her cheeks flushed again, and she shoved a notebook into my chest. "Meet me in the library after lunch."
"Is that detention or a secret date?"
"You'll find out soon enough."
And with that, she stormed off, her braid swinging behind her like a warning.
God help me, I was completely whipped.
The clock hit 2 PM.
I walked toward the library, my pace unhurried, but my heart... well, that was another story. How did she manage to do that? Turn even a dusty library into something that felt like a date?
As I entered, the scent of old pages mixed with something faintly floral. Maya. She was already there, seated at the farthest table, hidden behind a stack of booksβpretending to read, but the way she twirled her pen told me she was waiting.
And the best part? The library was empty..no students at all.
I walked up, pulled the chair beside her with exaggerated slowness, and leaned in. "Miss Raichand."
She looked up, trying to scowl. Failing.
"Mr. Khadoos."
I smirked. "Tsk. No 'Mrs.' today? You wound me."
She rolled her eyes and slid a notebook in front of me. "I have a doubt."
I raised a brow. "In Math or in love?"
Her mouth dropped open for half a second before she slapped my arm with the notebook. "Math, Rudra. Focus!"
I chuckled and leaned in closer, our arms brushing as I looked at the equation. I swear I could feel her breath catch.
She tried to scoot her chair away, but I casually tugged her wrist and pulled her back.
"You were about to fall off the chair," I lied.
She narrowed her eyes. "You're enjoying this."
I dropped my voice. "Too much."
There was a beat of silence.
Then she whispered, "This feels too good to be real sometimes."
I looked at herβreally looked at her.
The way the sunlight hit her eyes. The slight nervous bite of her lip. The way she clutched her pen like it was a shield.
I slid my hand under the table and gently took hers.
"It is real, Maya. Very real."
She blinked at me, and for a moment, neither of us moved.
Thenβquickly, quietlyβI leaned in and pressed a feather-light kiss to her cheek.
She gasped, eyes wide. "We're in the library!"
"Exactly," I said with a grin. "Keep your voice down, Mrs. Khadoos."
She shook her head, laughing softly as she buried her face in her hands, cheeks glowing.
God, if this was what love looked like, I was doomed in the best way.
