RONAN

Midnight, that back room with the long table, and for the first time in a long while all three of us were in it as one thing.

Understand what the room usually is: Cash fronts, Lucian calculates, I handle, and the three orbits touch politely and keep their distance, nobody saying the word our father's death retired.

Tonight the orbits collapsed. Cash stood at the head of the table in his gala tux with the tie gone and the charm burned off down to the bare wiring, and what was under the charm was our father with better aim.

Lucian worked three screens bare-eyed, glasses abandoned, sleeves turned back.

Gia had commandeered the whiteboard, and the whiteboard had become the Fortuna: floors, doors, dead escalators, drawn from a childhood spent underfoot in that building — the cash-tally room behind its steel door, and behind it the tribunal room where her uncle stages his courtesies, and beneath the whole thing a loading tunnel her grandfather dug in a decade when casinos still planned for certain kinds of weather.

"Metro has the alarm, the assault on Reyes, and a kidnapping inside their jurisdiction.

" Sato, from the door, coat still on. "What Metro does not have is patience, and what you do not have, Mr. Vane, is legal cover for what your face is planning.

So hear me: whatever happens tonight must survive a courtroom.

All of it. He goes down for everything or he surfaces in eighteen months wearing a new shell company. "

"It will hold." Lucian didn't look up. "Because the ledger finished.

" The room turned. He set it down — the full register scan, forty years of a spotless man cross-keyed at last — and his voice stayed level in the way that is Lucian at absolute war.

"Binder sign-outs under committee privilege, clustering before every event on our timeline: the badge clone, the theater camera, the courier packets, tonight's corridor.

Years of it. Her chart was right, brother — right to the day, right in crayon, and she built it on our carpet while all of us guarded her from the truth she was faster to than we were.

" He looked up then. "When she's home, she gets the register. It's hers. She found him first."

"And at one o'clock," Cash said, soft as felt, checking his watch like a man confirming a curtain time, "I'm going back down to my gala, and I am going to spend the traitor in public, in front of every camera on the Strip, where no lawyer can un-ring it.

Whitfield wants theater." The dimple appeared, and there was nothing warm anywhere near it. "I own a theater."

Rescue, ruin, strangulation: we divided our father's war like brothers dividing an inheritance, in four sentences, no votes and no speeches. Lucian to the Fortuna's money. Cash to the cameras. Gia's map to me.

Me to her.

I holstered under the dinner jacket while Gia marked the tunnel mouth, and Cash caught my shoulder at the door with the grip we don't use in public.

"Bring her home," he said. "And brother — the record can survive one wolf. Just bring the wolf back too. We've buried enough."

Nobody in my family had said I love you out loud in years. Tonight nobody needed to. We were one animal, and it had her scent.
