ESME

The fabric clings like a treacherous second skin, thinner than a breath and infinitely more degrading than the salt-stained rags of the slums. The emerald green silk drapes across my collarbones, plunging low enough to bare the jagged, pale scar bisecting my ribs.

The sheer sleeves offer zero concealment.

Under the harsh, unyielding light of the high-tier sun, the faint iridescent veins spiderwebbing up my inner forearms pulse, catching the glare with a pearlescent shimmer.

Around my throat, the gold Zanthenite collar rests against my pulse. The blood-red gemstone sits in the hollow of my collarbone, a glaring, permanent brand. Pet. Property.

I grip Kalan’s small hand, anchoring myself to his fragile warmth, and step out of the shadowed archway into the Tagnadaet estate gardens.

The courtyard is a vibrant, terrifying display of Khuzuth extravagance.

Carnivorous blossoms snap at the air, their petals resembling spun glass and dripping with sweet, intoxicating nectar.

Trees with bark of polished obsidian stretch jagged branches toward the bruised purple sky of Vhoig.

A winding path of crushed white pearl crunches beneath my thin leather sandals, the sound excessively loud in my own ears.

Miou guards line the perimeter, statues in dark armor. Their eyes track our every step. They do not blink. They calculate the exact angle required to sever my head should I make a sudden, unapproved movement.

Kalan presses his side flush against my thigh, his tiny fingers digging into the delicate green silk. He whimpers, overwhelmed by the vivid colors and the suffocating presence of so many predators in one space.

"Keep your eyes on the ground, sweet boy," I murmur, my lips barely moving. I squeeze his hand, projecting a calm I do not possess. "We walk. We stand quietly. Nothing will touch you."

Ahead, the court of Vhoig gathers around crystal fountains and statues carved from shifting, unnatural shadows. Jewels flash in the sunlight. Laughter tinkles over the bubbling water, sharp and cruel as broken glass.

At the middle of the glittering assembly stands the master of the house.

Zuirvih commands the space without moving a muscle.

He wears midnight blue velvet tailored flawlessly to his frame, gold embroidery tracing the broad, sweeping line of his shoulders.

Silver braids cascade over his chest, catching the light with metallic precision.

He speaks to a cluster of sycophantic nobles, his voice a low, mocking purr carrying effortlessly over the ambient noise.

The sound vibrates through the soles of my sandals. It prickles along the nape of my neck, sending a flush of unwanted, terrifying heat rushing beneath the cold emerald silk.

He is in his element. A monster playing the perfect host, manipulating the elite of the city with lazy, arrogant flicks of his silver-ringed fingers.

A shadow detaches from a cluster of flowering, venomous death-bell vines on our left.

A dark elf lord steps directly into our path, blocking the crushed pearl walkway.

His skin is the color of bruised iron, his hair cropped close to a skull adorned with intricate, emerald-scaled tattoos.

The sigil of The Serpent rests on his chest armor—a coiled viper with fangs bared, ready to strike.

The air around him turns stale, rancid with the scent of dried blood and cruelty.

He sneers, his upper lip curling to reveal elongated, yellowing fangs. The disgust radiating from him is a physical pressure, pressing down on my shoulders, demanding submission.

"The rumored Lowtown stray." The Serpent lord drawls the words, stepping closer.

His gaze rakes over my exposed ribs, lingering on the wild, pulsing magic locked within the veins of my forearms. "I expected Grymlock’s brother to inspire the keeping of cleaner livestock.

This one looks as though she crawled out of a harbor drain.

A pity the master draped such fine silk over a rotting corpse. "

Kalan lets out a sharp, terrified gasp, hiding his face in the folds of my gown.

The lord’s attention snaps to the boy. The cruelty in his eyes sharpens into predatory hunger.

"And the half-blood abomination." He clicks his tongue, taking another measured step forward. "Zatori speaks highly of this little anomaly. Let us see the rot in its eyes."

He reaches out, his clawed hand extending toward Kalan’s hair.

Instinct overrides caution. The survival tactics drilled into my bones in the alleys take control.

I step forward, shoving Kalan firmly behind my back.

My stance widens, my knees bending slightly, locking my center of gravity into a defensive coil.

I raise my chin, leveling my gaze directly into the Serpent lord’s sneering face.

Meeting the eyes of a Khuzuth noble is a challenge. A death sentence.

I do not blink.

"Do not touch him." My voice does not shake. The words strike the stale air like stones on glass.

The lord freezes, his clawed fingers hovering inches from my face. A beat of shocked, suffocating silence stretches between us. A human laborer, wearing a slave collar, issuing a direct command to a ruler of Vhoig.

His shock curdles into violent, explosive fury.

"You dare speak to me, filth?" He raises a hand. Crackling, sickly green magic pools in his palm, casting a bilious light over his iron-grey skin. He pulls his arm back, preparing to backhand me across the pearl stones, the magic snapping with lethal intent.

I brace for the impact, my jaw clenching, refusing to cower. I will take the blow and bleed on their pristine walkway.

The strike never lands.

The temperature plunges. The sharp, metallic tang of magic and crackling static annihilates the stale scent of the Serpent lord. A towering wall of midnight blue velvet steps out of thin air directly beside me.

Zuirvih’s arm locks around my waist, pulling me flush against his side.

The impact of his solid, unyielding body knocks the air from my lungs.

The heat radiating through his tunic burns against the thin green silk of my gown, a startling contrast to the icy terror gripping my heart.

His grip is a vice of pure, terrifying possession, his long fingers splaying over the exposed, scarred skin of my ribs.

He does not look at me. His glowing eyes are fixed entirely on the Serpent lord, blazing with a cold, catastrophic fury.

"Lord Vane," Zuirvih purrs. The words drip with a slow, lethal promise, vibrating through his chest and into my own. "You seem to have lost your way. The stables are on the eastern wing, should you wish to inspect the livestock."

Vane’s face flushes a darker shade of iron. The green magic fizzles out in his palm, dying under the overwhelming pressure of Zuirvih’s presence. "Tagnadaet. Your... pet forgot her place. I was merely instructing her on proper deference."

"Her instruction is my domain alone." Zuirvih’s voice drops another octave, a sound that rattles the nearby crystal fountain and demands total, unquestioning submission.

The air around Lord Vane begins to warp.

Purple static crackles along the white pearl stones, snaking up the Serpent lord's boots. Vane’s reflection in the nearby water twists.

The illusion stretches his neck to impossible, grotesque lengths, morphing his features into a screaming, agonizing caricature.

The shadow-spun magic spills from the fountain, wrapping invisible, suffocating bands around Vane’s throat.

The Serpent lord stumbles backward, gasping for air. His clawed hands tear at his own neck, fighting an enemy that does not exist in physical reality.

Zuirvih tilts his head, a cruel, beautiful smile stretching across his flawless ash-grey face. "She wears my colors. She wears my gold. Reach for her or the boy again, and I will ensure your skin decorates the walls of my hunting parlor."

Vane chokes, his eyes rolling back as the chaotic illusion cuts off his oxygen. He drops to his knees on the pearl walkway, his armor clattering loudly in the sudden, dead silence of the gardens.

With a dismissive, bored flick of Zuirvih’s fingers, the shadows vanish.

The Serpent lord collapses forward, coughing violently, clutching his unbruised throat while scrambling backward like a beaten dog.

The surrounding court turns into a collection of statues. Nobles snap their heads away, suddenly fascinated by their wine goblets and the blooming death-bell vines. The message is delivered, etched into the minds of every predator present.

Zuirvih’s hand remains clamped securely around my waist. His thumb strokes the pale, jagged scar over my ribs, a slow, warning caress broadcast to the entire gathering.

A tremor rocks my shoulders. I stand frozen against his side, trapped in the eye of a lethal storm, his chaotic magic buzzing through my blood.

He saved my life, but the unyielding grip on my waist is a terrifying reminder.

I am not safe. I have merely traded the alleys of the Lowtown for the lap of Vhoig's most dangerous monster.
