Chapter 49 Sienna
SIENNA
Vovchyk led me up the stairs after we’d given everyone goodnight hugs and kisses.
“Did you have a good Christmas, sweet boy?”
He let out a heavy sigh, and I grinned. Vovchyk was not a fan of our loud, chaotic guests.
The only exception was Clementine, who my sweet wolfy was besotted with.
No matter how loudly she squealed or how many hugs she gave him, Clem could do no wrong in his eyes.
Vovchyk had been a good sport with all our visitors, though.
By the end of the evening, he’d even allowed Noodle to cuddle him by the fireplace.
I, on the other hand, was already mourning having to say goodbye to everyone tomorrow.
The house would once more grow empty and quiet, although I was looking forward to bringing in the new year with all the guards and staff.
Slowly, this house was starting to feel like home.
It should have been a good thing, but I couldn’t enjoy it.
When Dimitri forced me to move out, would I ever see any of them again?
I turned the corner and jolted when I found the man in question sitting on the floor by my bedroom door.
After dinner, he had hidden away in his office.
I’d focused on hosting and keeping everyone happy, but my chest had been tight with anxiety.
He’d stormed out of the room after he overheard Sofiya talking about our baby’s heart scare, and I was sure he was pissed that I hadn’t told him.
Dimitri stood, and I braced myself for his anger.
“I know you don’t want me here, but I just need to know the baby is really okay.” His words were hoarse, like they had barely scraped their way out of his throat.
I blinked. “What?”
He took a step forward and reached out his hand like he wanted to touch my stomach before pulling it back. “The baby. It’s really okay?”
The dark circles under his eyes looked…almost haunted. How much sleep was he getting? Was he still having nightmares?
“Yeah,” I finally said. “The baby is doing well.”
He looked away, but the tension lining his shoulders eased. “Good. That’s good.” He ran his fingers through his hair. “Well, I’ll leave you alone.” He turned to walk away, but hesitated. “And you?”
I cocked my head. “Me?”
“Are you okay?”
“Oh.” My heart lurched with an unknown emotion. “Yeah, I’m okay.”
He gave me a curt nod, and then he was gone.
I dug my fingers into Vovk’s fur to steady myself. Even after all the wonderful gifts I’d received today, I couldn’t deny the deep ache in my chest. Because no matter how hard I tried to ignore it, what I really wanted was a hug from my husband as he told me everything would be okay.
