CHAPTER 8! BROKEN BED #2
But neither of them moved immediately. Aadhira remained standing near the edge of her study table, her fingers still twisted tightly around the delicate fabric of her ivory dupatta.
Aryav stood a few feet away beside her bed, his broad shoulders cutting through the ambient light, one hand resting loosely in his pocket while his gaze lingered on her face with that same unreadable stillness.
Not emotional. Never emotional. That was the most frightening thing about the sovereign-most powerful men looked at women with some recognizable human currency.
Softness.
Desire.
Overpowering anger.
Aryav looked at human beings the way an architect studied structural weaknesses before a demolition.
Aadhira looked away first. Again. Because maintaining unblinking eye contact with Aryav for too long always felt like walking into an active minefield.
"we should go downstairs," she said quietly, her voice perfectly level.
Aryav gave a single, microscopic nod of his head. No argument. No unnecessary conversation. Just silent, executive permission to leave his orbit.
Aadhira exhaled internally in profound relief and immediately turned toward the door. Good. Excellent. Survived. Barely.
She took exactly three hurried steps. Then, fate decided peace was an unacceptable option for the Agrawal legacy.
Something small, grey, and cold landed near her foot with a soft, wet sound.
Aadhira froze.
Her eyes dropped downward automatically.
And saw a lizard.
Not far away.
Not safely across the room on the wall. Right beside the strap of her left heel.
The scream that left her throat was immediate, primal, and absolutely, profoundly undignified.
"Aahh!"
Every shred of rational, Milan-educated thought vanished instantly.
Aadhira jumped backward in pure, blind instinct, her entire nervous system reacting before her brain could process the geography of her own bedroom.
Straight into Aryav.
Unfortunately for both of them, Aryav had been standing directly near the edge of the heavy king-sized bed.
The impact was violent.
Aadhira crashed against his solid chest hard enough to knock even his massive, unyielding frame off balance for half a second.
Her fingers instinctively reached out, grabbing a fistful of the front of his black silk shirt to keep from falling.
Aryav caught her automatically, his reflexes kicking in. One heavy, powerful arm locked around her waist with speed, pulling her into his center.
Then-the bed gave up on life entirely.
A loud, catastrophic crack of splintering wood split through the quiet room.
And the entire custom-made bed collapsed violently beneath their combined weight.
The supporting beams snapped, the mattress dipped downward with staggering force, and Aadhira gasped sharply as both of them fell onto the broken frame together.
For one horrifying second, the world became complete, unadulterated chaos. Rain drumming. Wood cracking. Her ivory dupatta tangling somewhere in his buttons.
Aryav's arm tightening like an iron band around her waist. The violent, breath-snatching thud of impact.
Then-silence. Dead, absolute silence.
Aadhira blinked once. Twice. Her brain slowly, painfully restarted its engines.
Warmth.
Heavy pressure.
Steady breathing.
Oh no. Hey radhe, Radha rani please no.
Very slowly, the reality of her situation arrived. She was lying completely on top of Aryav Rai Shinghania.
Completely.
On top of him.
One of his massive arms remained wrapped firmly around her waist from the fall, holding her against his chest with instinctive, protective force.
His other hand was braced flat against the broken mattress right beside her head, his knuckles white.
Her dark hair had fallen everywhere, scattering across his shoulders like ink, her dupatta half-trapped beneath his torso.
One of her silver bangles had somehow detached and ended up near the fractured headboard.
And Aryav-
Aryav was staring directly up at her.
The bedroom suddenly felt twenty degrees hotter.
The space shrank until there was no air left. Aadhira stopped breathing entirely, her heart slamming against her ribs like a trapped bird.
Their faces were dangerously close now. Too close.
She could see every detail with agonizing clarity: the lethal, sharp line of his jaw, the faint, pale scar near his left eyebrow, the dark, bottomless intensity of his obsidian eyes, and the slow, heavy rise and fall of his chest beneath her bare palms.
Her hands. Her hands were still tightly gripping the fabric of his shirt right over his heart.
Bhagvan ji, kill me immediately. Just strike me down.
Aryav did not move her away.
He didn't push her off him.
That absolute lack of rejection scared her far more than the initial fall itself. His gaze moved slowly, deliberately across her face. Not rushed. Not startled. Perfectly controlled. Always controlled.
But his breathing had changed slightly. Only slightly. Aadhira noticed because she was close enough to feel the warmth of it against her lips.
Thunder shook the glass windows again. Neither of them moved.
Then, Aryav's eyes shifted downward briefly, tracking the contours of their tangled limbs.
Aadhira followed his gaze, and immediately realized the physical mechanics of the broken mattress made everything infinitely worse.
Much worse.
Her knee was trapped firmly between his thighs because of the sharp angle of the collapse.
One of Aryav's hands still pressed firmly against her lower back, holding her flush against his frame, while his other arm remained locked beside her head, effectively caging her in without a shred of effort.
Heat rushed into Aadhira's face so violently she thought she might actually combust on the spot.
"I-" her voice failed instantly, cracking under the pressure.
Wonderful.
Absolutely beautiful performance from a fashion mogul.
Aryav's gaze lifted back to her eyes slowly.
There was no embarrassment on his face.
No awkwardness.
Only that same, absolute calm.
Which somehow made the sheer intimacy of the position feel far more dangerous.
Then-very softly-
"You react before you think."
Aadhira wanted the earth to open up and consume her permanently. "It fell right near me!" she whispered in horror, her eyes wide.
"A lizard," Aryav clarified calmly.
"Yes!"
"You launched yourself at me over a lizard."
"I panicked!"
"Clearly."
Aadhira stared at him in utter disbelief. Was he-was Aryav Rai Shinghania actually deploying sarcasm? The realization was so profoundly shocking she forgot her own humiliation for half a second.
Then, the broken wooden frame creaked again beneath them, shifting under their weight.
Aadhira froze instantly, her muscles locking.
Aryav's arm tightened around her waist automatically, pulling her even closer against him before the frame could drop further.
The sudden movement eliminated the last remaining millimeter of space between them.
Her breath caught sharply in her throat.
Aryav noticed that too.
Of course he did.
His eyes darkened slightly, the pupils dilating.
Not emotionally-something quieter.
Far more primitive.
Far more dangerous. Aadhira became painfully, acutely aware that she could feel the heavy, rhythmic thud of his heartbeat beneath her palm now.
Slow. Steady. Completely unlike the frantic, chaotic rhythm of hers.
Radha rani How was he this calm? How?
Aryav looked at her for one long, agonizing second before speaking again. "Breathe properly."
"The lizard is still... present in the room," she whispered, her lower lip trembling slightly.
Aryav's gaze dropped once-to her mouth. Just once. Then his jaw tightened almost imperceptibly
Something shifted briefly near the corner of his mouth. Gone before she could fully process it.
But something dangerously close to raw amusement flickered there for less than a fraction of a second.
And somehow, that microscopic shift felt more intensely intimate than if he had actually touched her skin.
Aadhira's heartbeat became an immediate, full-scale national emergency.
Aadhira tries moving away but mattress shifts.
Aryav's hand tightens on her waist.
Then:
"Stop moving."
A pause.
"You've damaged enough infrastructure for one evening."
Then-a loud, frantic knock exploded against the bedroom door.
"AADHIRA?" Padmini's voice echoed loudly from the corridor. "What broke in there?!"
Both of them went completely, utterly still.
Oh no.
OH NO.
Aadhira looked down at Aryav in absolute, unadulterated horror.
Aryav closed his eyes briefly, inhaling once through his nose.
Controlled irritation.
The kind men like him rarely showed publicly.
It was the first visible sign of genuine, human irritation he had displayed all evening.
Another violent knock rattled the wood.
"Aadhira?!" Tara's voice shouted from outside now, sounding alarmingly, deeply entertained already. "Why did it sound like a WWE match just happened upstairs? Answer us are you ok!"
