Chapter 21
Chapter Twenty-One
Kira
I had never seen anything like it.
And trust me—in New York City, in the areas I’ve lived in, I’ve seen some crazy stuff!
But this? It was absolutely insane!
It all happened fast. The mean guy who’d been yelling at the smaller guy pulled something out of his pocket. At first, I couldn’t tell what it was, but then a blade popped up and I knew it was a knife.
Rex didn’t freeze or even act scared. He moved so fast that it was hard for my brain to register it all until it was over. Uncoiling like a snake or something, his body just moved so fluidly as his leg lashed out and kicked the man’s hand.
He dropped the knife and howled in pain.
It wasn’t over. Rex never stopped and just transferred his momentum into another move that had him grabbing the would-be attacker’s right arm and twisting it behind his back where he held it and said, “It’s over.
Just stay still and wait for the police.
This will go better for you if you cooperate. ”
By then, cops were rushing onto the scene. Everyone in the sitting area was clapping, some on their feet. A lot of them had their phones out.
I stood up too, pointed to him, and said, “Rex Sterling Investigations! On Hollywood Boulevard! Look him up for all your private detective needs!”
He was chuckling when he made it over to me as the applause died down. Behind him, the police had the situation in hand.
“Were you advertising for me?”
“You advertised for yourself! This is a great opportunity to get your name out there.” I spread my hands. “The marketer in me couldn’t let it pass.”
He just chuckled again and then said, “The cops will want to talk to me. We’ll have to hang out here a while.”
“Sure,” I said.
In that moment I forgot all about what I had to tell him. You know, the stuff about me being a big fat liar? Because at that moment, all I could think about was how sexy Daddy—I meant Rex—looked and how he’d just possibly saved someone’s life.
He was a real-life hero! And I was spending the day with him.
I didn’t want to be at the Farmers Market or the Grove anymore. They seemed cool, but…
No, I had other things on my brain now.
“We should, um, go back to your place when this is over.” The words just spilled out of my mouth before I could stop them. I usually wasn’t that forward.
But right then, I just needed Rex.
And I needed him really bad.
The look in his eyes said he got the message loud and clear.
