Chapter 32
Chapter Thirty-Two
Kira
I tried to relax and have fun with everyone, but my mind was on Rex the entire time.
Was he okay? Would he go after those guys?
What if we were all worried for nothing and they were in jail? Or what if they’d realized I wasn’t Lila and had given up?
For all we knew, they weren’t even interested in finding me anymore.
Or they were and they were going to kill Rex.
It was me they wanted. Or rather, Lila. But they thought I was her so they wanted me. Rex, though, was an obstacle. Even if he was upset with me and we weren’t going to end up together, he still wouldn’t let anything happen to me. He would stop at nothing to protect me.
If he knew who those guys were, he’d keep coming and coming at them until either them or he was defeated.
I couldn’t let that happen. I’d messed up his life enough already. There was no way I was going to let him get hurt—or worse—because of my stupid mistake.
If only I could get a hold of them and work this all out somehow…
“Lila’s phone!”
“Huh?” Trish said.
“Sorry. Just talking to myself. I need to go make a call,” I said as I got off the swing I’d been on and hurried through the backyard and into the house then upstairs to the guestroom.
More messages were on Lila’s phone from that Barry guy and I opened them. My hunch was proven correct.
He was with them. Whoever they were.
The messages hadn’t been about hooking up or anything. They were more sinister.
WE WANT OUR FUCKING MONEY.
WE’LL FIND YOU.
YOU’RE ON BORROWED TIME, BITCH.
There were others, but I ignored them and sent one of my own.
THIS IS ALL A MIX-UP. I’M NOT LILA. CAN I PLEASE EXPLAIN?
Three dancing dots appeared and I waited for their reply to come in.
LET’S MEET.
Biting my bottom lip, I thought it over. It would be dangerous, sure, but if it would keep Rex out of harm’s way, then it was worth it.
Plus, if I picked somewhere public, how bad could it be?
I agreed and we messaged several times, setting the time and place.
It was happening.
