Chapter 2 #3
The deafening, ear-splitting sound of burning rubber shattered the night air as a sleek black sports car mounted the sidewalk curb at terrifying speed, its high-beam LED headlights blinding the dark promenade with brilliant white light.
The car slammed to a dramatic halt just inches away from the group, smoke pouring from its spinning tires.
Before the dust could even settle, the driver's side door flew open.
Akhil Raheja stepped out.
Shruti opened her eyes, and her breath caught in her throat.
Akhil looked like a force of nature, a dark, vengeful storm.
His suit jacket was gone, his white shirt sleeves were rolled up to his elbows, exposing his muscular forearms, and his tie was loosened.
But it was his face that made even the hardened thugs step back in fear.
His dark eyes were burning with a lethal, murderous rage that promised absolute destruction.
For a fraction of a second, Akhil’s eyes found Shruti. He saw her disheveled hair, her trembling frame, and the red mark on her arm where the thug was holding her.
A dark, cold quiet fell over him.
"Let go of her," Akhil said. His voice wasn't loud, but it carried an terrifying weight that made the air feel heavy. "Right now."
The thug holding Shruti tried to act tough, tightening his grip on her arm. "Mind your own business, buddy! You don't know who you're dealing with, "
Akhil didn't wait for him to finish the sentence.
In a movement so fast it was almost a blur, Akhil closed the distance between them. He grabbed the thug’s wrist, applying a precise, bone-crushing pressure point squeeze. The thug let out a high-pitched scream of agony as his grip on Shruti instantly shattered.
Akhil pulled Shruti behind his broad back, instantly placing his tall body as an impenetrable shield between her and the danger.
The second thug pulled out his knife, lunging forward with a desperate slash towards Akhil's chest. "Die, billionaire bastard!"
Akhil didn't even flinch. With lethal military precision, he dodged the blade, grabbed the thug's forearm, twisted it until the metal knife clattered onto the concrete, and delivered a devastating right hook straight to the man’s jaw.
'CRACK!'
The man went flying backward, landing hard against the concrete sea wall, knocked completely unconscious.
The first thug, clutching his broken wrist, looked at his unconscious partner, then looked up at Akhil, who was stepping slowly towards him with cold, murderous intent in his eyes.
"P-Please... don't..." the thug whimpered, backing away in terror.
"Tell Reyansh Khanna," Akhil whispered, leaning down close to the terrified man, his voice sounding like gravel, "that if his men ever touch a single hair on her head again... I will not just ruin his business. I will end him."
Akhil grabbed the man by his jacket and threw him effortlessly over the low concrete wall, sending him tumbling into the shallow sand near the ocean water.
Silence descended upon the promenade, broken only by the sound of crashing sea waves and Shruti’s soft, uneven gasps for air.
Akhil turned around slowly. The terrifying rage in his eyes instantly melted away, replaced by pure, raw concern.
He stepped towards Shruti, his hands trembling slightly, a rare sign of emotion from a man who was always in complete control of himself.
"Shruti..." he breathed softly.
Shruti stood there, her entire body shaking uncontrollably from the terrifying adrenaline crash. She looked up at his handsome, fierce face, her eyes welling up with hot, unshed tears.
"Akhil..." she sobbed.
Forget her pride. Forget the boundaries she had built up for years. Forget the fact that he was her brother's best friend.
Shruti took one step forward and threw her arms tightly around Akhil’s neck, burying her face into the warm crook of his shoulder.
Akhil froze for a split second, surprised by the sudden contact. But as he felt her slender body trembling against his chest, his protective instincts completely erased all rational thought.
He wrapped his strong arms around her waist, pulling her tightly against his solid chest, anchoring her to him. He buried his face in her dark, sweet-scented hair, resting his chin on her head as he held her close, feeling her heart beating rapidly against his own.
"You're safe," Akhil murmured, his deep voice vibrating against her cheek as he stroked her hair with gentle, reassuring strokes. "I've got you, Shorty. I've got you. Nobody is ever going to hurt you while I'm breathing."
Shruti held onto his shirt tightly, her fingers digging into the soft fabric, taking comfort in his warmth, his strength, and the intoxicating scent of sandalwood and cedar that wrapped around her like a protective shield.
For the first time in twenty-four hours, she felt completely safe.
But deep down, as she rested her cheek against his hammering pulse, she knew that everything was about to change.
The quiet life she knew was over, and the dangerous secret she carried was about to pull both of them into a storm neither of them could control.
