Chapter 9
The heavy double doors of Villa Raheja clicked shut with a resounding, metallic lock that echoed through the grand stone foyer.
Within seconds, the villa’s automated security protocols activated. Reinforced iron shutters descended smoothly over the wide ground-floor glass windows, and discreet amber security lights flickered along the perimeter walls.
Akhil didn't let go of Shruti’s hand for a single second. He led her swiftly down the wide hallway into his private ground-floor command study, his broad frame standing as an impenetrable shield between her and the glass doors.
Gia Moretti came hurrying down the hallway, her face tight with professional calm. "Akhil! The perimeter sensors on the southern water boundary just flagged two unauthorized high-speed motorboats entering our private bay."
"Leonardo alerted me," Akhil replied smoothly, his deep voice dropping to a calm, razor-sharp register. "Are the sea wall security barriers raised?"
"Si," Gia confirmed, holding up her tablet. "The underwater sonar grid is active, and our private security vessel is intercepting them now near the outer rocks."
"Good," Akhil nodded firmly. He turned to face Shruti, taking both of her hands in his broad, warm palm. "Stay here in the study with Gia. The walls of this room are reinforced stone, two feet thick. You are completely safe."
Shruti looked into his dark, intense eyes. Her head was still spinning violently from the raw, breathtaking words he had spoken just moments ago on the wooden dock, 'Because I love you, Shruti... I have loved you since the night you turned nineteen...'
Her heart was hammering against her ribs so loudly she felt certain he could hear it.
She wanted to ask him a thousand questions, wanted to scream out her own eight-year-old secret, wanted to reach up and wrap her arms around his neck.
But seeing the lethal, protective focus in his eyes as he handled the immediate threat, she forced herself to swallow her overwhelming emotions.
"Akhil..." Shruti whispered softly, her fingers tightening around his. "Be careful."
Akhil’s dark eyes softened for a fraction of a second. He raised her hand to his lips, brushing a lingering, warm kiss over her knuckles that sent a shiver straight down her spine. "I’m always careful, Shorty. Stay with Gia."
With those words, Akhil turned around and walked out of the study, joining his chief security officer near the terrace entrance to oversee the perimeter defense.

For the next two hours, the estate remained under full lockdown.
Outside, across the dark, misty waters of the lake, the loud roar of high-powered boat engines echoed against the steep mountain cliffs.
Akhil’s private security vessel, equipped with high-intensity spotlights and naval horn systems, confronted the two unidentified motorboats near the outer peninsula rocks.
Realizing that Villa Raheja was heavily fortified and that an armed security team was blocking the private dock, the two suspicious motorboats turned around, cut their lights, and sped back across the dark lake towards the public docks of Como town.
By midnight, Leonardo Bianchi arrived at the villa in his dark sedan, carrying encrypted files and legal reports.
Akhil, Leonardo, and Gia spent the next three hours locked in the executive study, reviewing security camera footage, tracking GPS signals, and coordinating with the local Italian carabinieri authorities.
Upstairs in her suite, Shruti couldn't sleep a single wink.
She stood near her arched balcony doors, looking through the glass at the quiet, dark lake. Every time she closed her eyes, Akhil’s deep, velvety voice replayed in her mind like a mesmerizing melody: 'I built this entire estate for you... Because I love you, Shruti...'
Did he really mean it? Or had the high stress of protecting her caused him to speak out of intense emotional pressure? Shruti held her hands against her burning cheeks, her heart aching with a mix of wild, electric hope and deep, terrifying uncertainty.
She had loved Akhil Raheja since she was nineteen years old.
She had buried that love under layers of stubbornness, travel articles, and independence, believing he would only ever see her as his best friend's little sister.
But now, the truth was laid bare, and the world would never be the same again.

The next morning, the bright Italian sun broke through the clouds, painting the waters of Lake Como in shimmering shades of cobalt and gold.
By eight o'clock, the security lockdown had been downgraded to standard alert status. Akhil was already locked inside the villa’s lower conference room, engaged in a high-priority, encrypted video conference with Raghav and Devendra Malhotra back in Mumbai, as well as European legal advisors.
Shruti dressed in a comfortable light yellow sundress, tied her dark hair into a loose bun, and walked down to the sunny garden terrace.
The air was fresh, carrying the sweet scent of wild jasmine and brewing espresso. Gia was sitting at a round wrought-iron table under the shaded pergola, reviewing a stack of hotel management documents on her laptop.
"Buon giorno, Shruti!" Gia greeted with a warm, welcoming smile, motioning for her to sit down. "Come, sit! Chef Matteo made fresh cornetti pastries and hot cappuccino."
"Good morning, Gia," Shruti smiled softly, taking a seat opposite her and pulling a warm cup of cappuccino towards her. "How are things holding up after last night?"
Gia set her laptop aside, taking a slow sip of her coffee. "The situation is stable. Those motorboats last night belonged to local private hired hands working for Victor Romano. They were doing a reconnaissance sweep, trying to see if Akhil’s villa was vulnerable."
Shruti’s smile faded slightly, replaced by a shadow of worry. "Is Victor Romano really that dangerous?"
Gia’s warm expression turned serious and reflective.
"Victor Romano is a powerful man in northern Italy, Shruti.
He controls illegal real estate deals and local transport networks.
He wanted to force Akhil to sell the Lake Como resort land to him for cheap.
When Akhil refused, Romano partnered with your rival in Mumbai, Reyansh Khanna.
But do not worry... Akhil Raheja is not a man anyone can intimidate easily. "
Shruti looked down at her coffee cup, running her fingers over the smooth ceramic rim. "I know," she murmured softly. "Akhil has always been like a mountain. Unshakeable."
Gia watched Shruti’s expressive face closely. The sharp, perceptive Italian manager saw the quiet, heavy distraction in Shruti’s dark eyes, the soft flush on her cheeks whenever Akhil’s name was mentioned, and the way her fingers trembled slightly.
A warm, knowing smile slowly broke across Gia’s face.
"You know, Shruti," Gia spoke softly, leaning her elbows on the iron table. "I have worked as Akhil’s European general manager for six years. I have seen him deal with cutthroat corporate billionaires, ruthless mafia businessmen, and international media."
Shruti looked up, listening intently. "And?"
"And," Gia continued smoothly, her dark eyes sparkling with deep warmth, "I have never seen Akhil Raheja look at anyone the way he looks at you."
Shruti felt a sudden, hot flush rush up her neck, her pulse skipping a beat. "Gia... he’s just being protective. He’s my brother’s best friend. He’s known me since I was a teenager."
Gia let out a soft, melodious laugh, shaking her head. "Oh, Signorina... you truly believe that?"
"What do you mean?" Shruti asked, her heart pounding against her ribs.
Gia leaned in closer across the table, her voice dropping to a quiet, conspiratorial whisper. "Let me tell you a secret about your 'protective big brother friend'."
Shruti held her breath, unable to take her eyes off Gia.
"Over the last six years in Europe," Gia began, her tone rich with memory, "Akhil Raheja became one of the most sought-after men in high society.
Italian heiresses, French models, aristocratic European women, countless gorgeous, powerful women tried to win his heart.
They threw themselves at him at charity galas in Paris, private yacht parties in Monaco, and luxury hotel openings in Milan. "
Gia paused, looking directly into Shruti’s eyes. "Do you know how many of those women Akhil took on a second date?"
"How many?" Shruti whispered.
"Zero," Gia stated firmly. "Not a single one."
Shruti blinked in utter shock. "Zero? But... why? Sonia Kapoor made it sound like he was constantly attending romantic galas across Europe!"
"Sonia Kapoor is a delusion," Gia snorted dismissively, waving her hand.
"Akhil tolerated her father for corporate permits, nothing more.
Two years ago, after a massive hotel launch in Venice, a stunning French heiress openly asked Akhil why he lived such a lonely, disciplined life when he could have any woman in Europe. "
Shruti’s throat felt bone-dry. "What did he say?"
Gia’s gaze softened into pure, tender affection.
"Akhil was standing on the terrace of the Danieli Hotel, looking at a small photo he kept hidden inside his leather wallet.
He turned to the woman and said, ''My heart was claimed eight years ago by a fiery, fearless girl in Mumbai.
She doesn't even know it, and I promised her brother I would keep her safe.
I would rather spend my life loving her from a distance than give a fraction of my heart to anyone else. ''"
Shruti felt as if all the air had been suddenly sucked out of her lungs.
A loud gasp escaped her lips. Her eyes welled up with hot, unshed tears as Gia’s words struck her chest like a physical blow.
'Eight years ago... A fiery, fearless girl in Mumbai...'
Eight years ago was the exact night she had turned nineteen in the garden gazebo. The exact night she had fallen in love with him.
"He... he kept a photo?" Shruti sobbed softly, her hand pressing against her hammering heart.
