Chapter 9 #3

Shruti walked down the wide stone corridor towards the lower executive wing. Her heart was beating fast, her mind still echoing with Gia’s incredible reveals about Akhil’s hidden wallet photograph and eight years of silent devotion.

She stopped outside the heavy mahogany doors of Akhil’s private conference room.

Through the thick frosted glass panels, she could see Akhil standing near the large wooden desk. His suit jacket was off, his white shirt sleeves were rolled up to his forearms, and he was pacing back and forth while speaking intensely into a satellite phone in fast, fluent Italian.

He looked exhausted, carrying the heavy weight of corporate wars, security threats, and family responsibility on his broad shoulders.

Shruti’s heart swelled with a deep, fierce tenderness.

She didn't knock. She gently pushed the heavy mahogany door open and stepped into the room.

Akhil stopped mid-sentence, turning his head towards the door. When his dark eyes landed on Shruti standing near the doorway in her light yellow sundress, his intense posture instantly softened.

"Hold on, Leonardo," Akhil spoke into the phone, lowering the device to his side.

He looked at Shruti, his dark eyes searching her face with gentle, protective concern. "Shruti? Is everything okay? Did Gia give you lunch?"

Shruti didn't answer right away. She slowly closed the heavy wooden door behind her, locking out the rest of the world. She walked across the polished marble floor towards him with steady, confident steps.

Akhil watched her approach, a faint look of confusion crossing his handsome face as he noticed the deep, glowing emotion burning in her dark eyes.

Shruti stopped right in front of him, just inches away from his broad chest. The rich, familiar scent of his sandalwood cologne wrapped around her like a warm embrace.

"Shruti?" Akhil asked softly, his deep voice thick with quiet concern. "What is it?"

Without saying a word, Shruti reached out her hand. Her slender fingers gently reached into the front pocket of his trousers, pulling out his leather wallet.

Akhil froze completely. His dark eyes widened in sudden, absolute shock. "Shruti... what are you doing?"

Shruti opened the leather wallet. Flipping past the credit cards and executive IDs, her fingers stopped at a small, worn leather sleeve hidden in the back compartment.

She pulled out a small, yellowed photograph.

It was a candid picture taken eight years ago. Nineteen-year-old Shruti was sitting on a wooden bench in her family's garden gazebo, wearing a simple blue t-shirt, holding a piece of dark Swiss chocolate, laughing brightly at the camera with raw, youthful joy.

Shruti held the small photograph between her fingers. She looked down at the picture, then slowly raised her head to look directly into Akhil’s dark, stunned eyes.

Silence fell over the room, a heavy, breathless silence filled with eight years of unspoken truth.

Akhil stood frozen like a stone statue. For the first time in his life, the powerful, formidable billionaire looked completely exposed, his ultimate secret laid bare before her. A faint flush crept up his bronze neck, and his jaw set in a tight, tense line.

"You kept it," Shruti whispered, her voice trembling with raw, beautiful emotion as tears glistened in her dark eyes. "You carried this in your wallet for eight years."

Akhil took a slow, heavy breath. He looked down at the photograph in her hand, then looked up into her tear-glistening eyes. The protective wall he had spent nearly a decade building around his heart finally crumbled into dust.

"I tried to put it away, Shruti," Akhil spoke, his deep voice dropping to a low, raw gravel filled with intense, agonizing love. "I tried a thousand times to throw it away, to forget you, to pretend you were just my best friend's sister. But I couldn't."

Shruti took one step closer, pressing her small body against his broad chest. She reached up with both hands, gently cupping his sharp, stubbled jawline, forcing him to look directly into her eyes.

"Why didn't you tell me, Akhil?" Shruti sobbed softly, a breathtaking smile breaking through her tears. "Why did you let me spend eight years believing you only saw me as a kid?!"

Akhil’s hands instinctively reached out, wrapping firmly around her slender waist, pulling her tightly against his solid chest, anchoring her to him.

"Because I promised Raghav," Akhil confessed rawly, his dark eyes burning with fierce intensity. "Because I thought I was too dark, too reckless, too dangerous for your bright world. I didn't want to ruin you, Shorty."

"You could never ruin me, Akhil Raheja," Shruti declared with fierce, unwavering conviction, her dark eyes flashing with pure love. "You are my safest home. I have loved you since the night you gave me chocolate in that gazebo, and I will love you for the rest of my life."

Akhil’s dark eyes flared with an intense, blinding power. The eight years of distance, the family boundaries, the fear, everything exploded into dust.

Without saying another word, Akhil lowered his head, his hands sliding up to cup the back of her head, and pulled her lips to his in a passionate, breathtaking embrace that claimed her soul once and for all.
