Chapter Eighteen
Calvin
My phone begins buzzing on the bedside table, waking me from a good sleep. I untangle myself from Nixie’s arms and legs. She huffs as she turns over, and I laugh at her reaction before reaching for my phone. The screen lights up the dark room, the time telling me it’s 2.15 in the morning and a message from Reid, asking me to ring him. It’s been a week since he got his guy to try and track down where they were being sent from. I climb out of bed and roll my eyes carefully to not wake Nixie as I make my way out of our room and down the stairs.
I dial his number and he picks up instantly.
“Do you ever sleep, brother?” I ask him.
“I’ll sleep when all this is over. My guy has managed to track where the messages were coming from,” he says.
“Where?” I ask.
“It’s coming from what looks like a warehouse about an hour away”
“Text me the address—now,” I shout.
I turn to find Nixie standing in the doorway, half asleep but with a concerned look on her face.
“What’s going on?” she asks whilst rubbing her eyes.
She’s beautiful no matter what, but this is my favorite way of seeing her; with my top on that clings to her curves, hair a mess from sleep and no makeup on.
Shaking my head, I concentrate on the more important matter.
“Reid’s guy has found the location that the messages were being sent from,” I tell her.
Her eyes open in shock. “Okay. Let’s go then,” she says as she walks back off in the direction of the stairs. Watching her ass sway has me distracted about what she just said until she’s out of my eyeline. And then it hits me.
“Wait. What?” I ask as I run after her.
“Let’s go,” she says again as she gets to the top of the stairs.
She can’t be serious right now.
“You aren’t going anywhere, darlin’. We agreed that you wouldn’t be involved with this part of me.” My voice firm as we get to the bedroom.
Her eyes roll as she begins to pull on some black jeans from her side of the closet. She takes off my black top, her tits just sitting perfectly on her chest. My dick hardens at the sight of them. She then places a sports bra over them, snapping me out of staring at her. She pulls her own black top over her body.
I walk toward her in the closet, cornering her in the back.
“What makes you think I’m going to let you come? It could be dangerous,” I tell her.
“And I didn’t want to be a part of it, but clearly I am now, and I want to see who’s behind all this. They are the ones who have completely turned my life upside down!” her voice raises at me
“And plus, is it not dangerous for me to be here, all by myself?” She smirks at me, knowing damn well she has a good point.
“Oh, Nixie, trust me, no one could get into this place.” I quickly place a kiss on her lips.
“But if you insist, you can come, if you follow one rule.” I say.
“What rule?” Her voice is full of curiosity.
“If I say run, you run, and you don’t look back for anything,” I state. “Do you understand?” I ask, needing that confirmation from her.
“Yes, sir,” she replies and winks at me.
Those words falling from her lips have me nearly buckling at my knees.
“Hmm, maybe I’ll have you call me sir from now on. I like how it sounds on your lips.”
Her eyes connect with mine and I can see the fire building behind them, she’s getting as worked up as me right now. The next thing I know her lips crashing onto mine, her arms and hands weaving around my neck and up into my hair which she starts to tug on, causing my dick to get even harder than it was.
The mood is cut short by my phone buzzing in my pocket.
“Fuck,” I say as I drag myself away from Nixie and dig out my phone. Of course it’s Reid.
“Yes, brother?” I answer through gritted teeth.
He laughs. “Did I interrupt something?”
I grunt at him as Nixie walks out of the closet, sitting on the edge of the bed putting on her back boots.
“Anyway, I was just ringing to let you know that me and my guys are heading up the warehouse now. Do you need us to swing by yours and get you?” he asks.
“No. I’ll make my way now. Oh, and Nixie is coming with.”
“Are you shitting me? She can’t come. It could be too fucking dangerous, Cal,” he shouts.
“Do you not think I know that?” I argue back.
“She isn’t giving me a fucking choice in that matter. And she knows my rule,” I tell him.
“She’s your responsibility, Calvin. Don’t let her fuck this up,” he tells me.
Like he needs to tell me that. Nothing is going to happen to her. They would have to go through me first. No one has succeeded yet.
Climbing into the car once again, we speed out of the driveway and out of the gate. The roads are quiet, so what should have been an hour’s drive only takes me forty-five minutes.
The warehouse is sitting on top of a hill just off the dirt road. I turn the lights off and park just off the road behind the SUV, which belongs to Reids guys.
“Put these in your pocket in case you need to run,” I tell her as I hand the keys over to her. As they land in the palm of her hand. The color from her face drains slightly and I see her swallow nervously.
“You can drive, can’t you?” I ask.
“Ermm. Yeah, I can. I just haven’t for a long time.” Her voice sounds a little more panicked than I would like.
“Don’t worry. This is just as an emergency,” I tell her, and she nods at me and puts them in her jeans pocket.
I climb out of the car and walk to her side, holding my hand out for her grab and she gets out, her hands are warm and clammy.
“Nothing will happen to you. I promise you that,” I tell her.
We walk over to where my brother is standing in front of his car with his guys. One is controlling a drone in the sky, so we can see what our situation is going on.
“Cal.” Reid nods at me and looks at Nixie. “Nixie, these are my guys, Tanner,” he points at the guy with the drone, “and Maddox,” he points to the other, just casually cleaning his knife collection on the hood of the car.
Nixie’s body gets closer to mine as Maddox looks up from the knives and smiles at her. He’s more fucked up than I am, and that’s saying something.
Tanner is a good guy—whiz kid with tech. Can and will find out every little detail of a person, which is unnerving in its own sense. But don’t let that fool you. The guy could easily take you out with one bullet.
“By the looks of things, boss, we’ve got four guys. Two on the door at the front, one inside and one on the back door,” Tanner states as the drone comes down to him.
“Me and Maddox will take the guys on the front. Calvin, you stay with Nixie and Tanner and get inside from the back,” he says to us. He hands out our earpieces, so we can communicate with each other.
I nod at my brother.
“You’re going to see me do things tonight, darlin’. Don’t let that change your opinion of me,” I tell her as we make our move toward the back of the warehouse.
We stay crouched on the grass verge as I make a plan in my head. The one guy at the back makes a shit security guard. He sits on a chair up some steps that lead to the back door with a cig in his hand, watching his phone. I roll my eyes at how easy this is going to be.
“Nixie, stay with Tanner,” I order her as I make my way down the verge. My foot slips on the stones at the bottom, which makes the guard look up from his phone. I crouch and wait to see what he does. He can’t see me this far back, especially in the dark of the night.
Doesn’t take him long to go back to looking at his phone. Taking this opportunity, I sprint to the warehouse walls and creep toward the stairs. He must hear some of my noise, as he pockets his phone and makes his way down the steps and starts to shine his torch on the grass.
Perfect.
With him being distracted, I draw my knife from my back pocket and creep up behind him. I have him locked in my arms before he can catch his next breath. Using my knife, I slice it across his neck without a second thought and his bloody body crumbles to the floor.
“Clear,” I say so everyone can hear.
Tanner and Nixie come running down the grass. I wipe my knife on the guards clothes and slip it back into my back pocket just as Nixie flings herself around me.
“You good?” I ask her.
“Yeah. I’m fine” she says back as she looks at the guard on the floor and then back at me.
“Clear on this side,” my brother’s voice comes through the earpiece.
“Let’s go,” Tanner says as he draws his gun from his belt.
Tanner leads the way. We don’t see anything until we open the door that leads to the main floor.
The room is occupied by a big desk in the middle of the room that has three monitors on and a guy sits behind them, tapping away on his keyboard.
Reid and Maddox make their way into the room opposite us.
“With everything that I was told about you guys, that took longer than I was expecting.” The voice coming from the chair says to us.
“Who are you?” I ask as I move Nixie behind more
The guy chuckles as he turns the monitors off, shutting the room into darkness. My grip on Nixie tightens, which only makes her do the same back to me. I promised her nothing would happen to her, and I intend on keeping that promise.
I hear a few scuffs and feet moving around. I know I still have Nixie.
The room lights back up and we’re all still huddled together but the guy at the monitors has disappeared.
Tanner walks over to the computers and starts going through them with Reid. With my grip still firm on Nixie I move us over to the corner for some privacy. All the adrenaline in her body comes crashing down and she begins to shake and sob, a noise that makes my heart ache.
“Hey, you’re okay.” I hold her tight as she continues to shake.
“I’ve got you,” I reassure her as the shaking comes to slow and her sobs come to a stop.
“There we go. Just breathe, Nixie,” I say, taking her face in my hands and lifting it to meet mine.
“I’m sorry. I don’t know what happened.” Her voice is quiet.
“It’s the adrenaline,” I say to her as I kiss her lips. She deepens the kiss as soon as mine connects with hers.
We both pull ourselves away from each other before it goes any further. I can see the desire burning in her eyes.
A clearing of a throat brings me back to reality. “Tanner has found something,” Reid says.
I smirk at Nixie and we walk over to the computers.
“What’ve you got?” I ask Tanner as he taps away on the keyboard.
“Well, I don’t know if this guy is extremely clever or extremely dumb, because he left information on here that I can get access to easily,” he states.
“Why would he do that?” I’m confused at the thought.
“I have no idea, but I do know that he is related to Cormac Sullivan.”
“Related how?” Reid asks.
“I think he may be Cormac’s nephew. But he has also left a lot of details on Cormac, like his residence and some of his business in the area.”
“That makes no sense. Unless it’s a trap maybe?” I shrug my shoulders.
“I don’t know. He could have used this as a trap to take us out,” Reid says.
I think we are all equally confused by it all. Tanner pulls out a USB drive and transfers as much data as he can, so he can go through it more thoroughly at his office.
As we head toward the front door, a small metal can comes rolling across the floor.
“Get down,” I shout as I throw myself over nixie just as it explodes, sending smoke throughout the building. My ears are ringing, but I grab Nixie’s face. Her eyes are darting all around the room. I put my face in her eyeline so she focuses on me and only me.
“Nixie,” I shout until she looks at me, those beautiful blue eyes that are normally full of love and laughter are now tainted by fear, and I hate that.
“Once I get you to the door, you run,” I tell her.
“Do you understand?” I ask again.
She nods and I grab her hand, pulling her to me and making my way to the door. The guys must have heard me over the ear piece as they cover us.
I check outside to make sure it’s safe. “Run,” I tell her as I turn to her. She hesitates at first, but then suddenly she runs off back to the direction of the car.
The anger surging through my veins now is top level. How dare someone put my girl’s life at risk. I charge back into the room with my knife drawn. The guy coming for me doesn’t stand a chance as I throw my knife at him, landing it directly in the middle of his head. His body falls back to the floor and I pull my knife out whilst walking over to where the other guy is coming from the back door. I do the same to him as I did to his friend.
I pull my knife from him and wipe it on the dick’s clothes.
“We’ve got this brother. Go find Nixie,” Reid’s voice comes into my head, drawing from the depths of my anger-fueled brain. I nod my head at him and dart out of the front door. I quickly make it back to my car to find Nixie, sitting in the driver”s seat looking nervous as hell.
As I run up to the door, I see the sigh of relief from her.
“Move over,” I tell her as I open the driver’s door.
I watch her ass climb across the center and into the passenger seat. What a perfect view.
“Let’s go home,” I tell her as I start the car. Nixie is quiet for the journey home, but she doesn’t fall asleep. I don’t blame her. The shock of the night plus the adrenaline is keeping her wired. She barely even notices when I put the car in park on the driveway.
“You tired, darlin’?” I ask her as I take my seatbelt off and unbuckle hers.
“No,” she rasps at me.
I chuckle as I get out of the car and make my round to the car to her side. “Well, how about we do something to tire you out?” I whisper in her ear as I pull her close to me.
“Yes, please.” Her voice filled with need.
“And maybe we can do the whole ‘Yes, sir’ thing?” I ask as I nip at her ear and kiss her neck.
“Yes, sir,” she giggles as she replies.
“Good girl,” I tell her as I pick her up, throwing her over my shoulders.
