“I don’t need that. My mom still wants me to come home for the summer.”

“She probably thought I’d just turn around and fly home instead. Her guilt trips usually work.”

“You can tell me,” Gem said.
“My mom blames you for me not coming home for the summer,” Luka told him.
“I bet that’s not all your mom blames me for,” Gem guessed.
“It doesn’t matter,” Luka replied. “I’m where I want to be.”
“And I’ll be by your side no matter what,” Gem promised. It hadn’t been easy to get Luka comfortable with spending the entire summer with Gem’s family instead of Luka going to his own. Gem was determined to show Luka how a good family treated one another.
“I know. I appreciate it,” Luka said.
“Now let’s talk about your little attitude a few minutes ago,” Gem said.
“I’m sorry.” Luka was quick to apologize.
