Chapter 32
THIRTY-TWO
LEVI
YUCK FOU FOTHER MUCKER
Evan’s eyes shot a dagger in my direction. “Did you just make out with Allie?”
I shrugged and took a swig of my beer.
“You have fucking lip gloss on. Come on man, you promised you’d leave this alone and keep me happy.”
“I don’t recall. And you know to never put the key to your happiness in my pocket. I don’t even trust myself most days.”
His head shook. “When you be anything in the world Levi, an asshole seems like and odd choice.”
“Calm down. It’s a pretty good night. We’re not in jail, not in a hospital, and not in a grave.”
“YET. Yet is the key word.” He pointed behind me. “What the hell is going on with the girls?”
I spun around in my seat to see Allie, Lexi, and Kristina being led somewhere by two security officers. Clearly in the past ten minutes this thing had gone off the rails.
We followed as they were led to an office inside the front door.
“Get your hands off me.” Lexi glared at the security officer.
I walked in. “Lexi, it might be a good time to keep all thoughts to yourself.”
She shook her head at me. “Your check asshole light is on again, Levi. And just so you know, I hope a bird shits on your face today.”
One of the security guards sat behind a desk. “Wow. She’s a little ray of sunshine, huh?
I nodded. “I wish they made shut-up spray.”
Lexi snarled at me while the second security officer stood at the door.
“And you are?”
“I’m Levi Dawson.”
“Are you with these three?”
“Yes.”
Lexi’s head shook. “Not me. Yuck fou fother mucker.” She laughed and nudged Kristina with her arm. “See, I told stupid Levi off in a secret language.”
“Lexi, here’s a reminder before you lose your shit. They don’t serve alcohol in prison. Watch it.” I pointed to her. “Sir, please ignore this one. She’s crazy.”
Her gasp was dramatic. “Me crazy?”
Kristina nodded. “Oh, for sure. But honey, I don’t care if you lick windows, run into doors, or even pee on yourself. You’re my favorite crazy person.”
“Awww.” Yes, it was a cute yet annoying hug.
The security guard cleared his throat. “Well, the ginger punched a woman in the face, and the lady in leopard tried to punch me.”
Lexi flashed a tense smile. “I apologize about that. Y’all, it took me a second to realize what was going on.”
“She’s a little dim.” Why was I trying to push her buttons?
“You shut your face, Levi.”
Allie raised her hand. “May I speak? Would that be possible?”
Her shirt was wet, and the outline of her bra was on full display. The security dude nodded.
“I was just standing there when that woman threw her drink at me. All Lexi did was tell her to get away, but then she pushed everyone around.”
As if in a play Lexi leaned forward in her chair and held her back. “Oh yeah. She pushed me hard. Real hard. Knocked the wind right out of my lungs.” She coughed dramatically.
Eye roll.
Allie nodded. “I just wanted her away from my table, but then she grabbed my hair and wouldn’t release me. It really hurt and before I knew it, I hit her to make her let go.”
Lexi’s arms flew in the air. “Your honor, this is clearly a case of self-defense.”
The security officer shook his head. “I’m not a judge.”
She flashed a ginormous smile. “Ya should be, Sir. You look like a real smart fella.”
I stepped forward. “Excuse me, may I say something?”
He gave me a nod. “By the way, thank you for what you do. I imagine it’s not easy to keep things under control around here.”
“I’m a police officer by day and this whole city is nothing compared to the clientele at this club.”
“Yeah, half clothed men, liquor, and ladies don’t mix well. But I can promise you that what Allie did here was because these girls are so special to her. She’d walk to the ends of the earth to protect her people. You know what I mean?”
“I do.”
“Well, I didn’t have many people there for me growing up, but you did.
You know about the instinct to protect.” I pointed to Allie.
“And this one. She is an angel. She’s brilliant with that brain of hers.
She believes in people and sees the best in them without judgment even when they’re a little jacked up.
” I met her eyes and knew there had to be a way to get her back.
“She’s sweet, kind, and anyone she has in her life is lucky to have her.
I know things went sideways here tonight, but these women would never be out to just hurt anyone. ”
The security guard leaned back in his chair. “Listen to this guy talking you ladies up.”
I scanned over to Lexi and for the first time in, well, probably forever, her eyes were a little softer. Like not raging hate toward me, maybe just bubbling fury at the moment.
The security guard stood up. “You all had better get out of here before I change my mind.”
