Chapter 11

Pitch Black Darkness

The camera flickered again as Teresa lifted her coffee and glanced up at the screen. A shadow crossed the hallway feed, and at first she brushed it off as a guest wandering the halls late. Then the figure stepped into the light.

Her breath caught.

Reggie.

He moved fast, head turning like he knew he wasn't supposed to be seen. Then she saw what he was carrying, and the mug slipped from her hand, shattering across the floor.

"Oh my God."

Sky hung over his shoulder, hands tied behind her back, silver duct tape sealing her mouth. Her head lolled with each hurried step, dark hair swaying.

"No… no, no."

Teresa leaned closer to the monitor, her pulse pounding in her ears as Reggie disappeared around the corner and the screen went empty. Her chest tightened, and the realization hit hard.

Brenda.

"You bitch."

She grabbed the pistol off the table, threw the suite door open, and ran.

Her slippers slapped against the cold marble as she sprinted to Brenda's door. She pounded with one fist, the other tight on the pistol.

"Open this damn door!" She hit it again, harder. "I know you're in there!"

Silence pressed back at her. Her breathing turned sharp and uneven.

Doors nearby cracked open as sleepy guests peeked out, half-awake faces crowding the doorframes. A woman in a silk robe stepped into the hall.

"What's going on?" She saw the gun and went back inside.

Teresa didn't even look her way. She slammed her fist against the door again.

"You crazy bitch! Open this door!"

Still nothing.

She grabbed the handle and twisted. It was locked.

"Open this damn door!"

The hallway felt too quiet now, too still, like everything had paused except her panic. Every second she stood there stretched thin, another second Sky was out of reach.

"Damn it!"

She stepped back and ran, down the hallway and back into the suite.

She burst inside, nearly slipping as the monitors cast a cold glow across the room. The bathroom door stood open, the hidden passage waiting beyond it — dark and silent.

She looked down at the pistol in her hand, her fingers trembling around the grip. She had never held a gun until tonight. Never fired one. Thunder roared through the mansion, rattling the walls as she thought about Sky — the tape over her mouth, the terror she had to be feeling.

She swallowed. Steadied her breath. Then raised the pistol.

"I got you girl."

She stepped into the darkness and ran.

The passage narrowed after the first turn, the old brick walls pressing in on both sides, damp in places and cracked in others. Rusted pipes ran overhead, dripping water that echoed through the darkness, while small emergency lights cast a dim red glow, making the tunnel feel alive.

Nobody spoke. Their footsteps echoed against the walls, mixing with the low rumble of the storm above.

Darius led with the flashlight, Tyreek close behind him, while Celeste and Vicky followed.

The air smelled old — earth, mildew, something stale that clung to the back of their throats. The beam swept across the floor.

"Hold up." Darius crouched, the flashlight steady in his hand.

A silver bracelet lay in the middle of the passage. Vicky gasped and pushed past them, dropping to her knees. "Oh my God… that's Sky's." She picked it up carefully, like it might break. "She never takes this off."

Silence settled around them. Vicky looked up at Celeste, her eyes wet. "She's been through here."

Celeste glanced down the tunnel, her breath steady but tight. "Then we're going the right way."

They moved again. A few steps later, Tyreek stopped and bent down, picking something up from the ground. "Yo." He held up an earring, a small diamond cluster with one stone gone. "Anybody recognize this?"

Vicky shook her head. "No."

Celeste took it from him, turning it between her fingers. "It's expensive… but it isn't Sky's."

Tyreek frowned. "Then whose is it?"

"I don't know," she answered. "But I think we're gonna find out."

She stuck it in her pocket, and they kept going as the tunnel twisted left, then right, until Darius stopped again. A piece of dark fabric hung from a jagged nail in the brick. He pulled it free, rubbing the material between his fingers. Soft silk.

Vicky stepped closer, her eyes widening. "I've seen that."

Everyone looked at her.

"Brenda," she said. "That's the same color as the robe she had on earlier."

Tyreek glanced down the tunnel, his jaw tightening. "You mean to tell me that crazy ass woman been down here?"

No one answered.

Then a woman's scream cut through the tunnel somewhere ahead and everyone froze.

"Sky!" Vicky yelled.

Another scream echoed, closer this time.

Darius broke into a run, the others right behind him, their footsteps pounding against the concrete as the passage widened, then fell open completely. The red glow faded into brighter light as they rounded the corner and came to a stop.

The tunnel opened into a series of underground rooms. An old wine cellar sat to the left, rows of dusty bottles lining wooden racks.

Across from it, tables were covered in surveillance equipment — monitors, computers, wires tangled together.

Screens flickered with footage from different parts of the mansion, some still running.

In the center of the room, a table held photographs of guests.

Women. Shots taken from windows, balconies, pool chairs, bedrooms — angles that made it clear none of them knew they were being watched.

Tyreek turned slowly, taking it all in. "What the fuck is this place?"

Darius lifted a finger to his lips. "Shhhhh."

Another room sat partially open nearby. Masks hung from hooks along the walls — black, silver, gold. Some were elegant, like something from a masquerade. Others were darker, twisted into shapes that felt wrong just to look at.

A chill crept up Celeste's spine. Someone had been using these passages for years. This wasn't just a hidden tunnel. It was a whole world beneath the mansion.

And somebody had been living in it.

Another scream tore through the underground rooms. Close enough now to hear the fear in it, tangled in hopelessness, pulling them to the right.

Darius took off, with the others close behind as they rushed through the maze of rooms and burst into another chamber.

"Help me!" Sky cried but no words left her mouth.

She sat on the floor with her hands tied behind her back, silver tape stretched across her mouth, tears streaking down her face.

"Sky—" Vicky moved toward her, but a figure stepped out of the shadows.

Reggie held a pistol steady in one hand. "Don't move."

Tyreek saw the fear in Sky's eyes and snapped. "You motherfucker!" He charged, slamming into Reggie hard enough to send the gun skidding across the floor. They crashed into a table, bottles and papers scattering as wood scraped against concrete.

Darius jumped in, grabbing Reggie from behind and yanking him back.

Reggie swung wild, his fist catching Darius across the cheek, but Darius fired back with a punch that cracked against Reggie's jaw, blood spraying from the impact.

Tyreek pushed himself up and swung again, forcing Reggie to stumble.

"Get Sky!" Darius shouted.

Vicky dropped beside her friend and ripped the tape from her mouth. Sky gasped, breath shaking, as Celeste cut the rope binding her wrists.

"It's okay," Vicky said, pulling her close. "I got you."

Sky clung to her, trembling.

Behind them, the fight escalated. A table overturned with a crash, wood splintering as Reggie shoved Darius into a shelf and dove toward the floor.

The pistol.

"No!" Celeste shouted.

Reggie's fingers closed around it as he rolled onto his back.

Bang!

The shot exploded through the room, ringing in their ears.

Tyreek screamed and dropped to one knee, clutching his side as blood spread through his shirt.

"Tyreek!" Darius yelled.

Time stood still for a beat.

Tyreek looked down, breath hitching. "Oh... shit."

The bullet had torn through the flesh below his ribs. Pain twisted his face, but he stayed upright.

Reggie scrambled to his feet. Darius lunged, but Reggie shoved a shelf into his path and bolted through another doorway.

"Damn it!" Celeste snatched the pistol from the floor and aimed into the darkness, her breath steadying as she listened.

Footsteps echoed, then faded into silence.

Vicky looked up. "He's gone."

Tyreek sat on the floor, pressing his hand against his side. "I think that bastard shot me."

Sky let out a shaky sob as Celeste lowered the gun, her gaze sweeping the room while tension settled into something heavier.

This wasn't over. Not even close.

Vicky moved quickly. "Let me see it." She lifted his shirt and examined the wound. Blood covered his fingers and soaked into his shirt. The bullet had grazed through his side, leaving a bloody flesh wound instead of a fatal injury.

Vicky released a slow breath. "You're lucky as hell. It grazed through the outer layer."

"What does that mean?"

"A flesh wound. Keep it clean and you'll live."

"Thank you, Jesus."

Vicky tore his sleeve from his shirt and pressed it against the wound.

Tyreek jumped. "Shit!"

"You gotta keep it covered until we get out of here and I can find a first aid kit and stitch it later."

"It hurts."

"You got shot. It's supposed to hurt."

Darius was still staring at the doorway Reggie had disappeared through. "That son of a bitch."

Bang!

Everyone froze.

Another gunshot echoed somewhere deeper in the underground rooms.

Bang!

Tyreek looked up. "What now?"

A third shot rang out and Celeste started moving toward it. "Come on."

"We got Sky," Tyreek said. "Why you going toward gunshots?"

"I'm still a cop," Celeste answered with her gun drawn.

Darius followed. Sky grabbed Vicky's hand, refusing to let go, and the group hurried through the maze of hidden rooms, weaving around shelves and tables covered in old equipment.

Then silence. The kind that made the back of your neck prickle.

They rounded a corner and came to a stop.

Reggie lay on his back, blood spreading beneath him, his eyes fixed on nothing. He was dead.

Teresa stood a few feet away with the pistol in her hand, her arm trembling so badly it looked like she might drop it. Nobody spoke.

Tyreek blinked. "Holy shit."

Darius stepped forward. "Teresa?"

She looked at him, tears streaming down her face.

"I saw him." She took a breath. "I saw him carrying Sky on the cameras.

" Her voice cracked. "I knew something was wrong.

" She looked down at Reggie's body. "He came running through here and saw me.

He pointed his gun at me and..." She swallowed hard.

"I just pulled the trigger like Darius said. "

She looked at Celeste. "Brenda did this."

The words hung in the air.

Sky's face crumbled as Vicky tightened her grip on her hand. Darius looked away. Tyreek slowly shook his head. Celeste didn't blink, because she had already suspected it, but hearing it spoken aloud made everything connect.

Then— CLANG!

A metallic crash echoed through the underground rooms. A thick steel door dropped from the ceiling behind them.

Boom!

Another slammed shut farther down the tunnel.

Boom!

A third.

The underground world seemed to seal itself.

Darius ran to the nearest door and grabbed the handle. It didn't budge. He slammed his shoulder into it, but the steel held.

"We're locked in."

Celeste stepped beside him and pressed her hand against the cold metal. The door was thick, heavy, and built to keep people in. Or keep them out.

Tyreek looked around the room. "This is not how I imagined my last day on earth would be." He sat on the ground with his back against the wall. "It's all my fault."

"It's not," Darius said.

"Yes, it is." Tyreek yelled so loud his voice echoed. "You told me my dick was gonna get me in trouble one day, but I ain't the only one to blame." He looked at Vicky.

"Don't look at me," Vicky snapped. "I ain't got shit to do with your dick or that psycho bitch."

Tyreek pointed up at her. "Your son." A tear slid from his eye.

"Rashad?" She frowned. "How could my son have anything to do with this?"

"I been on his dick products for three months now. I went from four and a half inches to damn near a foot long and these bitches can't get enough of me. He got me running these hoes crazy."

Teresa was the first to laugh. She wasn't alone for long.

"Negro," Teresa said, "you might have eight and a half." She kept laughing. "But it's good though."

Celeste looked at Darius. "Did he really just say that?"

Darius folded his arms. "That bullet might've hit a nerve that fucked up a few of his brain cells."

Vicky held her stomach, laughing so hard she could barely stand. "If I die tonight, I'll be at the pearly gates laughing my ass off at your dumb ass for eternity."

"Shut up," Tyreek screamed so loud his voice cracked. "We about to die and y'all laughing. Well, I don't wanna die in here or see no damn pearly gates no time soon."

Then Sky said, "I think I know how to get us out of here."

She had everyone's attention now.

"When Reggie's weak ass hit me in the back of the head, he thought he knocked me out, so I played sleep." She walked over to the edge of the door. "I saw him open these doors." She pushed a small metal button on the wall and the door slid up into the ceiling.
