CHAPTER TWENTY
We were a day before spring break, and I hadn’t talked to Dio since our encounter in the restroom.
I was trying to be patient and not think the worst, but it was hard.
He texted me here and there, but it wasn’t the same.
Paige, Alyse, and I decided to have lunch at the Blue Café.
This had become like a thing for us. Although I was leaving to go back to the city and Dio was staying here in Covana, I was kind of excited.
I missed my brothers, and I knew I owed Zaria an apology.
She hadn’t said anything to me since she and Chevy left.
When I arrived at the café, I saw Paige and Alyse sitting at a table in the corner. As I headed toward the table, my phone rang, and to my surprise, it was Zaria.
“Hey!” I squealed.
“Are you busy?” she asked.
I moved through the café while talking to her. “No, I’m not. I will be there tomorrow after my last class. I promise. Is he excited?”
I wanted to apologize, but I felt I should do it in person, so I was holding off. I could tell she wasn’t with the small talk, but she came in calmly. “A little, but you know your dad. Well, make sure you're on time.” I stopped in the middle of the café. “See you tomorrow,” she said dryly.
“I love you, Zaria. Talk to you later.”
She didn’t even respond; She hung up, and that hurt my heart because I truly loved Zaria. To know I had fucked up that bad didn’t give me any comfort. I tossed my phone in my purse and continued toward the table but was stopped in my tracks when a cold drink went flying on me.
“The hell!” I shouted.
I looked up to see a girl with a smirk on her face. “Oops, my bad,” she snickered.
I sucked my teeth as my fists curled into a ball. “Samara, no!” I heard Alyse yell.
I drew my fist back and swung. I didn’t know this girl from a can of paint, but the fact that she had purposely thrown her drink on me pissed me off. I had a million things going on, and she was about to be the casualty.
My arm started swinging, and she and I began rocking through the Blue Café.
The bitch barely had hair to grab on to, so I used my foot to kick her backward.
The fight reminded me of the one Bianca and I had in New York.
My spirit was telling me this had something to do with Dio.
She snatched at my shirt, trying to pull me toward the floor.
“Nah, bitch!” I gritted.
I took a good grip of her shirt and allowed my hands to lead as I drew back and hit her.
Wham! Wham! Wham!
When my body flew in the air, I was still kicking and screaming. “Samara, calm your pit bull ass down!”
While I was being pulled away by Streets, the other bitch was being pulled away by that guy who had the baby. He carried me until we were outside.
“Put me the fuck down!” I shouted.
He let me go before standing there looking simple. “Is Dio messing with her?” I asked.
“Nah.”
“I’m only asking this shit one more time. I find it funny that this bitch randomly throws a drink on me. I don’t know who she is or where she came from. I don’t fuck with nobody, and this happens, so again, Xavier, is Dio fucking with her?” I shouted.
“I said no!” he barked at me. “She does like the nigga, yes, but I gave her the warning. Dio is not worried about anybody but you. Yes, that’s my nigga, but I would tell you if he was fucking with someone else.”
Suddenly, the café doors opened as Alyse and Paige were being carried out. “Stupid bitch!” Alyse screamed.
Xavier looked confused. Paige paced the parking lot. “I’ve got to get out of here. I can’t be doing this shit. Her friends waited until you got pulled out and started talking shit, so Alyse and I did what needed to be done.”
A laugh left me when I saw Paige’s braids all over her head. She looked at me, upset, then started laughing. “The shit is not funny. This is some Morgan-type shit.”
Alyse fixed her hair as she turned to me. “It’s spring break, and I want to see my man. Are we done or what?”
Streets shook his head. “Y’all are for sure some Zoo Babies.”
They all stopped and looked at me. Right then, it hit me.
It was I, the one who should have been in their positions long ago, who was still standing here waiting.
I had put all of that in the back of my mind, and that small comment made everything resurface again.
Chevy and Zaria didn’t have to wait until tomorrow because I'd be with my family today.
