Chapter 26 Settling in Jiangnan

The house in Jiangnan wasn't large.

My mother disliked having too many servants around. Only a few maids for sweeping and a couple of gatekeepers.

Jun Zhenxian escorted us to the entrance and stopped there.

He said he would come visit another day.

Right next door, though, the plaque on the neighboring residence boldly displayed two characters—Jun Residence.

That night.

My father talked with me for a long time.

He read the letter my mother left behind, word by word, stroking it gently with his hand.

His eyes never left the page for a moment.

My mother's handwriting was different from ours.

My father could read it.

So could I.

My mother wasn't from our world. She said she came from a very distant future.

When she left, I was only three.

I could barely remember.

I only recalled her saying she had completed her mission task and had to return.

In the letter she left me, she wrote that there were many Mission Takers like her, and most chose to stay.

But she couldn't.

She said she could use points to exchange for medicine.

A massive viral outbreak had struck her world. Many people died.

Like the plagues in our world.

I didn't really understand what points were.

But I didn't blame my mother at all.

Neither did my father.

My father drank quite a bit.

He held tightly to the jar of wine my mother had buried before she left, refusing to let go.

"Your mother has something she must finish. Once it's done, she'll come back."
