Epilogue
The following spring
I supplemented the pinecone with a diamond engagement ring presented on bended knee at the top of our tower during a full moon last autumn. The refuge closes to the public at dusk, but I took advantage of one of my employment perks.
Today I’m taking advantage again by giving Shelby the wedding of her dreams. We’re at the peak of her favorite trail overlooking a meadow of blooming wildflowers and a beautiful blue lake.
It’s a small party with me and Shelby, our officiant, Ollie as my best man, Shelby’s sister as her maid of honor, my parents and sister, and Shelby’s friend Daphne and her date.
My bride chose a simple yet elegant white dress with a long skirt that stops mid-calf.
I told her she could get the long gown she dreamed of and I’d carry her up the trail so it didn’t get dirty.
But she insisted she wanted the short one so she could walk up the aisle nature created for her.
She’s radiant as we stand facing each other repeating our promises to love, honor, and cherish one another till death do us part.
As I share a first kiss with my wife, Ollie whispers to Phoebe, “Bigfoot finds a bride, finally.”
Yes, he did. But more importantly, he found love and acceptance. And a happily ever after.
