The first public appearance had a name: the soft launch. “We don’t announce first,” Damian had decreed at the kitchen counter. “We’re seen first. Twice, organically, before any statement exists. People believe what they think they discovered.”
“There was a contaminated batch at a regatta when I was nine,” he said, with the dignity of a man laying down a losing hand. “Forty guests. My grandfather called it an excellent stress test of the household.“
“You got food poisoning at a boat party—“
“I was a child who got sick at a boat party,” he confirmed gravely, “and the household passed the stress test,” and I laughed — the real one, too loud for the room, the laugh my mother called my Queens laugh — and he watched me laugh with an expression that was forgetting to be managed, and somewhere outside, through the strategic glass, a photographer earned his whole week.
After that we were just at dinner. He told me about Kit’s expulsion from boarding school (heroic; involved a telescope).
I told him about Dina and the bar exam. He ordered a dessert he didn’t want because I couldn’t decide between two, ate his halves like a man honoring treaty obligations, and at some point his hand crossed the table and took mine — not negotiated, not blocked on any calendar — and turned it over and traced the new sapphire with his thumb, once, like checking a fact he kept being surprised by.
We left at 10:40, eighty-five minutes past the brief.
The photographs ran Thursday, ahead of any announcement: DURAND’S MYSTERY WOMAN, over a frame of the two of us on the sidewalk — my head tipped back mid-Queens-laugh, his face turned fully toward me, unmanaged, unbriefed, caught.
Comms called it a flawless soft launch. And Damian studied the picture a long moment at the counter and said, finally, quietly, “The strategy assumed we’d be performing,” and put his phone face-down like a man tabling a motion he wasn’t ready to vote on.
