Chapter 15
Nick
What do you think of him, the probie?”
I’m sitting with Captain Hyun in her office. Both of us are drinking coffee while she goes over the shift’s paperwork.
After the car wreck this morning, we had a few more calls, but nothing as traumatic or dangerous as the first.
“I’m optimistic about him,” I say.
I don’t tell her about Tristan’s emotions in the ambulance. That would be a betrayal of trust. And I don’t tell her about how we met last night. She doesn’t need to know that.
“He’s professional, he’s competent, and he’s been great in each emergency so far. He was an ER nurse before this, so he’s excellent with medical care.”
“That’ll be good to have. Do you think he’ll get along with the team?”
“I don’t doubt it. I think he’s out there crushing Vinnie in ping-pong right now.”
She grins. “I thought only you could beat Vinnie?”
“Maybe I’ve met my match.”
Maybe in more ways than one, though I don’t say that part out loud.
Captain Hyun might be like a second mother to me, but she doesn’t need to know that Tristan Cavanagh has captured me so completely.
Even Tristan doesn’t know that—he can’t know that yet. He can’t know that when he was sitting there, crying, all I wanted to do was hold him, comfort him, make everything all right for him.
