Epilogue
Excerpt from Noon magazine cover story, eighteen months later
Noon Magazine:Tell us about the inspiration for your home.
Rhett McCoy:Devon’s my inspiration.
Devon Blake:That is only partly true. He bought this magnificent plot of land, developed the floorplan, and started building the house long before he ever met me.
RM:But it had no heart until I found you.
DB:He exaggerates.
RM: I’m not exaggerating. I built the walls, but I didn’t have a plan for what should happen inside them. Once I met Devon, it gave the project direction. I wanted to build something that made her happy.
DB:I am very happy here, so he pulled that off. It was important to me that we built a home that would showcase his incredible skillset. I drew a lot of inspiration that way, finding every opportunity to include custom woodwork.
RM:And she pulled that off. I swear, every room in the house has something she dreamed up for me to craft.
Noon:Unique built-ins and bespoke wood detailing are common to see in your work throughout Palm Springs as well. But this was the first home you built together. Correct?
DB:He was a carpenter for a handful of jobs I was the lead designer on before our house, but never anything to the scale of what we got to do here.
Noon:Is that how you two met? On a job?
DB:Yes.
RM:Pretty much.
Noon:Pretty much?
DB:We crossed paths once before our first project together, but we mostly got to know each other on the job.
Noon:Do you get to work with each other often?
RM:All the time. It’s awesome.
DB:We make a really effective team.
Noon:Devon, you worked for Trina Boatswain, who was a Palm Springs design icon, for years before starting Friday West Interiors. How has her retirement affected you?
DB:It has certainly opened doors for more designers to set up shop in Palm Springs. I am happy to see our design community growing.
Noon:Rhett, you have a new venture starting, don’t you?
RM:That’s right. We’re relaunching my custom furniture line, McCoy’s Chairs. It’s been in the works for years, but I never had the right support to pull it off.
DB:For the record, I did not sign off on that name.
RM:You love it.
DB:I do not.
Noon: It’s a charming name. And on the subject of charm, I have to ask about the pink flamingos. They’re not common to see in projects like yours.
DB:I also did not sign off on those.
RM: They’re sentimental.
DB:Well, that is true.
Noon:So, what’s next for the two of you?
DB:We have about three months to wrap up the design on our nursery.
RM:I’m putting the finishing touches on a crib this afternoon.
