Asher

I maintain a pleasant facade, mingling amongst the guests even as my mind swirls with questions about the poisoning attempt. Uplifting tunes from the string quartet and laughter float through the lush greenery while the guests enjoy the garden party.

Out of the corner of my eye, I notice Rendfield approaching swiftly, an alarmingly grave expression on his face. I excuse myself from the group of nobles and meet Rendfield in a shadowed alcove. This man is not one I usually see alarmed or really with any expression other than confidence and the mask of boredom he generally wears during work hours.

"Your Highness," Rendfield utters urgently, "there has been an incident with the maid, Lilly. I followed her as you requested and observed a confrontation between her and an unknown man near the eastern courtyard. "

My brows furrow in concern. "Is she harmed?"

"I do not believe so, Your Highness, though the man utilized some form of magic against her before disappearing in a cloud of smoke."

My jaw clenches, anger simmering within me. "And where is Lilly now?"

"On her way back here, I presume. She gave chase, but he evaded her."

I place a hand firmly on Rendfield's shoulder. "Speak of this to no one else for now."

Rendfield nods. "Of course, Your Highness."

My mind races, thoughts swirling like a tempest. This strange new maid has nearly been assassinated on palace grounds after apparently saving my life. I need answers, and I suspect only Lilly holds the key.
