18. Ronan

EIGHTEEN

RONAN

Ronan had drifted into the deepest sleep of his life without even realizing it.

The profound contentment that followed completing the triad mate bond had wrapped around him like a warm blanket, more peaceful than anything he'd experienced in the twelve years since that terrible night when everything changed.

Lying there with Sloane's warm body pressed against his chest and Kozue's steady presence at her back, Ronan felt something he'd forgotten existed—the luxury of simply being a man instead of constantly being the Alpha.

For the first time since he'd inherited leadership of the Hale pack, his mind had quieted completely.

No mental lists. No strategic calculations.

No weight of responsibility pressing down on him.

Just this synchronized rhythm of three hearts beating as one, the soft whisper of Sloane's breath against his collarbone, and the bone-deep satisfaction of knowing she was finally, irrevocably theirs.

The pale moonlight streaming through the tall windows of his suite painted everything in silver, creating an almost ethereal quality to the moment. Ronan's internal clock told him hours had passed, though it felt like mere minutes since they'd collapsed together in exhausted bliss.

Across Sloane's sleeping form, Kozue stirred, his green eyes blinking open in the darkness. When their gazes met over her head, Kozue kept his voice to barely a whisper.

"Is it nighttime already? I didn't even realize we'd drifted off."

Ronan moved slightly, careful not to disturb Sloane, whose face was relaxed in sleep. "Neither did I. I was just lying here, savoring this feeling of the completed bond, and I must've dozed off."

A slow smile spread across Kozue's face. "I've never felt anything quite like this before. But now it all makes sense—how we were always supposed to fit together. Not three separate individuals, but one complete unit."

The truth of those words settled deep in Ronan's chest. For years, he and Kozue had worked in perfect harmony, their partnership so seamless that pack members often joked they shared a brain. But this was different. This was the missing piece neither of them had known they needed.

"I'm sorry I ever doubted it could work," Ronan admitted, his voice thick with emotion. "I should have trusted our brotherhood more. And trusted myself that this was always how it was supposed to be."

Kozue's expression grew thoughtful as he absently stroked Sloane's hair. "I'm sorry too. Now I finally understand my place in this triad. I was always supposed to stand beside you and balance the bond. Where you give Sloane strength and steadiness, I give her playfulness and comfort."

"Exactly." Ronan felt a profound sense of rightness wash over him. "This triad bond gives her what she needs from both of us. Our combined strengths make her feel more whole than she could ever feel with just one of us."

The completed mate bond thrummed between them, and through it, Ronan could feel Sloane's dreamless sleep—the first truly restful sleep she'd probably had in years.

And he could sense Kozue's quiet amazement at how perfectly they all fit together, like pieces of a puzzle that had finally found their proper places.

Suddenly, Sloane stirred between them, her hazel eyes fluttering open to take in the moonlit room. She blinked several times, clearly disoriented.

"Oh no, we fell asleep," she said softly. "What time is it? I need to go check on Tasha."

Ronan's hand found her shoulder. "I'm sure Tasha is settling in just fine. Besides, Emerson would have made certain our healer Augustine fixed her up completely and insisted she get proper rest afterwards."

Sloane was about to respond when the suite door suddenly burst open without warning.

Emerson rushed inside, her usually composed demeanor replaced by urgent panic.

She took three steps into the room before realizing what she'd walked into—three naked bodies tangled together in Ronan's massive four-poster bed.

Her eyes went wide, and a fierce blush colored her cheeks. "Oh my god, I'm so sorry! I didn't mean to interrupt. But we have a major problem."

Every trace of contentment vanished from Ronan's body as his Alpha instincts slammed into high alert. He sat up immediately, the sheet pooling around his waist, his entire focus shifting to the crisis at hand.

"What's wrong?" His voice carried the unmistakable authority of leadership.

Emerson's hands twisted together, her usual cheerful confidence replaced by genuine fear. "Jarvis and Bruno just got radioed. There's been a perimeter breach. A small army of rogue wolves are approaching from the southern border, and they're moving fast."

The words hit Ronan like blows, and for a moment, he was twenty-three years old again, watching his world burn as rogues tore through their territory like a plague. The same cold dread that had filled his chest that terrible night twelve years ago now threatened to overwhelm him.

Not again. Not my pack. Not when I finally have my mate and a future I want to build with her.

Beside him, Kozue sat up sharply just as Sloane began to sit up, clutching the sheet to her naked body.

"Kozue, take Sloane and go with Emerson," Ronan commanded, his mind already shifting into tactical mode. "Get the guests to safety. I'm going to the perimeter."

"No." Kozue's voice was firm, brooking no argument. "I'm going with you. You're not facing this without me."

The declaration hit Ronan with sheer force, and through the completed bond, he could feel Sloane's spike of panic and fear—not for herself, but for both of them. The thought of losing what they'd just found, what they'd just claimed, was written clearly across her face.

"Sloane, I have to do this," Ronan said, his gaze moving between his Beta and his mate. "I have to protect our people."

"Sloane, I have to protect my Alpha and our people," Kozue replied with equal intensity.

Sloane's voice was steady despite the fear. "I know."

Then she leaned forward to capture Ronan's mouth in a fierce, claiming kiss that tasted of desperation and love and a promise to survive whatever was coming. When she broke away, she turned immediately to Kozue, kissing him with the same desperate intensity.

When she pulled away from Kozue, her voice was firm. "Protect our people."

At that moment, Ronan felt the weight of everything they'd built—the lodge, the pack, their newfound bond—balanced on a knife's edge. But as he looked at Kozue's determined face and felt Sloane's unwavering trust through their connection, he knew one thing with absolute certainty.

This time would be different. This time, he wouldn't let them take what he loved.

Five minutes later, Ronan was pulling on his black tactical pants and boots while Kozue grabbed his own gear from the closet they'd shared countless times during pack emergencies.

The familiar ritual of preparing for battle felt different now—charged with the desperate need to protect not just their territory, but the mate they'd finally claimed.

"Ready?" Kozue asked.

Ronan nodded, his jaw set with grim determination. "Let's go."

They moved through the lodge with brisk efficiency, taking the stairs two at a time and crossing the lobby in long strides.

Several guests looked up from the massive stone fireplace where they'd been chatting over evening drinks, but Ronan kept his expression neutral, offering a brief nod that suggested routine business rather than imminent danger.

The front doors of Hale Lodge came into view, where Jarvis and Bruno stood like twin sentinels. Both enforcers straightened as their Alpha approached, their postures radiating lethal readiness despite their casual stance.

"Don't let any rogue get inside Hale Lodge," Ronan commanded, his voice carrying the authority that had kept his pack safe for twelve years. "No matter what happens out there, this building stays secure."

Jarvis gave a sharp nod. "Understood, Alpha. Nothing gets past us."

Bruno cracked his knuckles. "We've got your back here. Go handle business."

Without another word, Ronan and Kozue burst through the front doors and into the cool night air.

The moment their feet hit the gravel drive, they broke into a dead sprint toward the southern perimeter.

Adrenaline surged through Ronan's veins as they covered ground with inhuman speed, their enhanced wolf stamina allowing them to maintain a pace that would exhaust any human within minutes.

The lodge's warm lights faded behind them as they plunged into the dense forest that surrounded their territory. Pine branches whipped past their faces, but they barely noticed, focused entirely on reaching the battle before it could spread closer to their home.

When they'd covered a quarter mile and were safely beyond any curious human eyes, Ronan felt his wolf surge to the surface.

Without breaking stride, he allowed the transformation to take him.

His bones cracked and reformed, muscles expanding as thick black fur erupted across his skin.

Within seconds, his massive black wolf was racing through the forest on four powerful paws.

Beside him, Kozue's shift was equally seamless. His enormous brown wolf emerged in a blur of motion, chocolate-colored fur gleaming in the moonlight as they ran side by side through their territory.

Just like old times, Ronan's wolf thought grimly as they closed the distance to the southern border.

Minutes later, they crested a ridge and saw the battle spread out below them. The sight that greeted them made Ronan's wolf snarl with rage. Fifteen of his pack enforcers and ten additional pack members were locked in vicious combat with what had to be thirty rogue wolves.

Bodies writhed and clashed in the moonlit clearing, the sounds of snarling, snapping teeth, and pained yelps filling the air. Blood already stained the forest floor, and Ronan could see several of his wolves were injured but still fighting with the fierce loyalty that made him proud to lead them.

Without hesitation, Kozue's wolf launched himself into the fray, his powerful jaws clamping down on the throat of a grey rogue that had cornered one of their younger enforcers. The rogue went down with a gurgling whine, and Kozue immediately spun to face the next threat.

Ronan's wolf surveyed the chaos for exactly three seconds, his Alpha instincts cataloging threats and tactical positions. His gaze swept the perimeter of the battle, and there—standing in the shadows beneath a cluster of pine trees—he spotted a familiar figure.

Darius Kade.

Even in human form, the rival Alpha was unmistakable. Tall and imposing, with auburn hair that caught the moonlight and ice-blue eyes that watched the carnage with cold satisfaction. He stood with his arms crossed, observing the battle like a general reviewing his troops' performance.

The sight of the man who'd most certainly murdered his family sent a wave of pure fury through Ronan's wolf.

Twelve years of patient control threatened to shatter as memories of that terrible night crashed over him—his parents' broken bodies, his younger brother Davis calling his name with his dying breath, the smell of smoke and blood that had haunted his dreams ever since.

Finally, his wolf growled. Finally, we can end this.

But before Ronan could charge toward his enemy, three massive rogues converged on him from different angles. His attention snapped back to immediate survival as they attacked in perfect coordination, clearly following orders to neutralize the Alpha first.

The largest rogue—a scarred beast with yellow eyes—lunged for his throat while the other two flanked him from either side.

Ronan's wolf twisted away from the killing bite, but powerful jaws clamped down on his shoulder, sending spikes of pain through his body.

He lost sight of Darius as the three rogues pressed their advantage, working together to bring him down.

One rogue's claws raked across his ribs while another tried to hamstring him from behind.

Not like this, Ronan's wolf snarled, fighting with desperate fury. I won't fall the same way my father did.

Just as the largest rogue prepared to deliver a crushing bite to his spine, Kozue's wolf slammed into the attacker with the force of a freight train.

The two wolves went down in a tangle of fur and teeth, rolling across the forest floor as they fought for dominance.

Freed from one opponent, Ronan's wolf spun to face the remaining two rogues.

Fighting beside Kozue felt as natural as breathing—they'd trained together for decades, sparred countless times, saved each other's lives more than once.

Their movements flowed together like a deadly dance as they systematically dismantled their attackers.

Kozue's wolf went for the throat while Ronan's wolf crushed the spine of the second rogue.

Within moments, all three rogues lay motionless on the blood-soaked ground.

That's what happens when you mess with the Hale pack, Ronan's wolf thought with savage satisfaction.

But even as they turned to help their pack members finish off the remaining rogues, Ronan's thoughts kept drifting back to the lodge.

Through the completed mate bond, he could feel Sloane's fierce determination and razor-sharp focus.

She wasn't cowering in fear—she was preparing for battle, ready to defend their home and their people with the same intensity that drove him and Kozue.

She's not just our mate, he realized with a surge of fierce pride. She's claimed this pack as her own. She'll fight for Hale Lodge just as hard as we will.

The knowledge that Sloane had found her place among them, that she'd chosen to stay and protect rather than run, filled Ronan with a strength he'd never felt before. She wasn't just something to protect—she was a warrior who would stand with them no matter what came next.
