Chapter 52

Nina

Oh my God. Oh my God. Oh my God.

My hands were completely useless at blocking out the sound of gunshots outside the car.

Suddenly, the only sound was the rain pelting the roof of the car.

Not daring to sit up and look, I stayed curled up in the back seat with my eyes squeezed shut and my hands over my ears.

It’s too quiet.

I just about jumped out of my skin when someone pounded on the rear driver’s side door; the scare forcing me to sit up.

A very angry man screamed orders while slamming his gun into the glass.

I shimmied backwards across the seat and leaned against the other door.

Will he shoot me if I don’t open the doors?

The windows were bulletproof, but they’d shot the back window enough to crack it. When I looked at the back window, I saw Austin.

A different man glared at me while holding a gun to Austin’s head.

Austin.

His wet hair clung to his forehead. His face was bleeding and swollen around his left eye. Blood dripped down his right arm.

The guy yelled at Austin. Austin yelled back.

The guy punched Austin in the lower gut, forcing him to curl forward, then he slammed his head into the truck of the car.

“Open the fucking door!” the guy pounding on the window screamed.

Tears flowed down my cheeks as my lungs tried to suck in air.

I can’t breathe. I clutched my chest as panic set in.

I can’t panic, or they’ll kill him. Remembering all the times Austin told me to breathe, I inhaled and exhaled slowly while counting to four.

Then I opened my eyes and looked at Austin.

With fear in his eyes and anger in the set of his jaw, he nodded.

Does he want me to open the door?

“Open the door, or we’ll shoot him.”
