Chapter 19 #2

But he's also getting more desperate. More willing to take risks.

He launches himself at Hunter in a vicious attack, aiming for the throat. Hunter sidesteps at the last second, and Marcus hits the ground hard, his momentum working against him.

Before he can recover, Hunter is on him, moving with a speed that seems impossible for something so large. His teeth find Marcus's scruff, and he uses his weight to pin the gray wolf to the ground.

Marcus thrashes, trying to throw Hunter off, his claws raking Hunter's side. I see more blood, see Hunter's body tense with pain, but he doesn't let go. He adjusts his grip, his jaws now positioned at Marcus's throat. It’s not biting him, but the threat is unmistakable.

The clearing holds its breath.

Marcus struggles harder, snarling, refusing to give in. Hunter applies more pressure, and I can see the exact moment Marcus realizes he can't win this.

"Submit," someone murmurs in the crowd. Then others join in, a low chant that builds. "Submit. Submit. Submit."

Marcus's struggles weaken. His body goes still beneath Hunter's weight. Then, slowly, deliberately, he turns his head to the side, exposing his throat in the ultimate sign of surrender.

Hunter holds the position for another moment, making sure the submission is genuine, making sure everyone in the clearing sees it. Then he releases Marcus and steps back, blood dripping from his wounds but his posture radiating dominance.

Gregory's voice rings out, formal and final. "The challenge is over. Hunter Turner remains Alpha of the Willow Creek pack."

The clearing erupts. Pack members who supported Hunter cheer and howl. Even some of Marcus's faction look relieved. They'd backed him out of loyalty, not necessarily agreement. The sound washes over me, and suddenly I can breathe again.

Hunter shifts back to human form, breathing hard, blood running from several cuts across his chest and side. Curtis is there immediately, handing him his pants and a towel.

Marcus shifts as well, looking defeated and diminished in his human form. He doesn't meet anyone's eyes as he stands, one hand pressed to his ribs. Garrett moves to support him, and for the first time, I see uncertainty on the young wolf's face.

"Marcus," Hunter says, his voice carrying despite his exhaustion. "Do you acknowledge the outcome?"

For a long moment, Marcus is silent. His jaw works, his hands clench into fists, and I can see the war happening inside him. Pride versus survival, resentment versus reality.

Then, grudgingly, he nods. "I acknowledge it. You remain Alpha."

"And do you submit to my authority as Alpha of this pack?"

Another pause, this one even longer. Finally, through gritted teeth, "I submit."

"Good." Hunter turns to address the entire pack, drawing himself up despite his injuries.

The moonlight catches the blood on his skin, makes him look fierce and untouchable.

"Let me be clear about something. This challenge was about more than just leadership.

It was about what kind of pack we want to be. "

His eyes sweep across the assembled wolves. "Do we want to hide from change, or do we adapt to it? Do we want to isolate ourselves, or do we build alliances that make us stronger? Do we want to cling to the past, or do we create a better future?"

His gaze finds mine across the clearing, and the intensity in those blue eyes makes my heart stutter.

"I choose adaptation and growth. I choose a future where we don't have to hide who we are from everyone, where we can work alongside humans who prove themselves trustworthy." He walks toward me, and the pack parts to let him through. "A future where we're stronger because we're willing to change."

Rachel releases my hand as Hunter reaches me. He's covered in blood and sweat, breathing hard, but he's never looked more certain of anything.

"This woman," he says, loud enough for everyone to hear, "has proven herself time and again.

She discovered the threat to our territory when we didn't even know it existed.

She worked with us to identify the source.

She stood up in front of cameras and government officials and risked her own career, her own safety, to protect our land. "

He takes my hand, and I'm trembling so hard I'm sure everyone can see it.

"She has earned her place here. She has earned my trust, and she should have yours.

" His voice drops to something dangerous, something that makes even the most confident wolves in the crowd take a step back.

"Anyone who challenges her place in this pack, who questions her right to be here, who threatens her in any way, challenge me. "

He looks around the clearing, meeting eyes, making sure the message is received. "And we've all seen how that ends."

The pack is silent for a long moment. Then Gregory steps forward, his weathered face showing approval.

"The Alpha has spoken. Dr. Ava Sinclair is under the pack's protection. This is witnessed and accepted by all gathered here."

Slowly, pack members start nodding. Then a few voices call out support. Caleb goes first, then others I recognize from the town hall meeting. Within moments, it's a chorus of acceptance, pack members declaring their agreement, their protection, their welcome.

Hunter turns back to me, and his expression softens. "Hi."

"Hi." My voice comes out shaky. "You're bleeding."

"I'm fine. I've had worse." He cups my face with one hand, heedless of the blood on his fingers. "I told you I'd win."

"You did. You really did." And then I'm crying, all the fear and tension of the past three days releasing at once. "I was so scared."

"I know. I'm sorry." He pulls me into his arms, and I don't care that he's bloody and sweaty and the entire pack is watching. All that matters is that he's here, he's safe, he just won, and he publicly claimed me in front of everyone.

"Come on," he murmurs into my hair. "Let's get out of here. I need to get cleaned up, and we need to talk."

"About what you just did?" I pull back to look at him. "Telling the entire pack I'm under your protection?"

"Yes. And about what it means. And about what happens next." His thumb brushes away my tears. "But somewhere private, where it's just us."

As we start walking toward the edge of the clearing, pack members approach. Some clap Hunter on the shoulder, congratulating him. Others nod to me, acknowledgment that I'm now officially part of their world.

An older woman I recognize from the gathering at Caleb's place touches my arm. "Welcome, dear. It's about time Hunter found someone worthy of him."

A younger couple stops us. "Thank you, Dr. Sinclair. For helping find the contamination. Our kids play in those woods. We want them to be safe."

Mona, the woman who'd thanked me after the town hall presentation, gives me a warm hug. "I knew you were special. The pack is lucky to have you."

Even Gregory approaches, his lined face kind. "You've proven yourself, Dr. Sinclair. Not just tonight, but over these past weeks. The pack recognizes that."

Curtis is the last to speak to us before we leave, pulling Hunter aside for a brief, quiet conversation. I can't hear what they're saying, but I see Hunter nod, see something pass between them. Mentor to student, former Alpha to current.

Then Curtis turns to me. "Take care of him. He's going to need it after those wounds."

"I will."

"And Ava?" He smiles slightly. "Welcome to the family."

Rachel catches up to us as we near Caleb's truck. "We’ll head out and check on you later. You two take your time."

"Thank you for driving her and keeping her company," Hunter says.

"Of course." She hugs me quickly, whispering in my ear, "See? I told you he'd win."

As we drive away from the challenge clearing, Hunter's hand finds mine across the seat. The moon follows us through the trees, huge and bright and somehow approving.

"That was the most terrifying thing I've ever watched," I say quietly.

"I'm sorry you had to see it. But I'm glad you were there." He glances at me, his face half in shadow. "There’s something I should have said to you before all this."

"Yes. What’s that?"

"I love you Ava Sinclair. More than anything."

My heart stops. I play the words back in my mind again and again.

Hunter waits patiently, never taking his eyes off me.

“I love you too,” I finally whisper.

He lifts my hand to his lips, pressing a kiss to my knuckles despite the blood still on his skin. "We need to talk about what happens next. About what it means that I claimed you in front of the pack. About?—"

"The mate bond?" I finish.

He looks surprised. "You know about that?"

"I've been doing research. Talking to Rachel. Trying to understand what it means." I turn in my seat to face him as much as the seatbelt allows. "And I want to hear about it from you. Everything."

"Then that's exactly what we'll do." He squeezes my hand. "Tonight. After I get cleaned up and we're somewhere private. I'll tell you everything, and you can decide what you want."

"I already know what I want," I say softly.

"What's that?"

"You. This life. This pack." I smile despite the tears still on my cheeks. "All of it."

He pulls over to the side of the road, puts the truck in park, and kisses me like a man who's just won the most important battle of his life.

Because he has.

And so have I.

When we finally pull apart, both breathing hard, he rests his forehead against mine.

"I love you, Ava Sinclair."

"I love you too, Hunter Turner. Now take me home so I can clean those wounds and we can plan that ceremony."
