Chapter Twenty-One

The conference room in the state environmental agency's Raleigh office is sterile and intimidating. All white walls, fluorescent lighting, and serious-faced officials in suits. I sit at one end of a long table, my research binders stacked in front of me, trying not to let my nerves show.
Across from me sits a panel of five EPA investigators, two state environmental officials, and a stenographer.
At the opposite end of the table, EnvironTech's legal team has assembled in force.
It includes four lawyers in expensive suits, led by Robert Long, the man who confronted me at the town hall.
Hunter wanted to be here. Insisted on it, actually.
But Lydia advised against it. It would raise too many questions if the leader of a reclusive mountain community would attend environmental testimony in Raleigh.
So instead, he's waiting in the lobby, close enough to feel through the bond but far enough to avoid raising suspicions.
I can sense his tension through our connection, his frustration at not being able to protect me in person. I send him what I hope is a calming thought, and feel his emotional response. Worry mixed with pride.
"Dr. Sinclair," the lead EPA investigator, a woman named Patricia Morrison, begins. "Thank you for making the trip to testify today. We've reviewed your initial report, and we have some questions about your methodology and findings."
"Of course. I'm happy to answer anything you need." I straighten my shoulders, channeling every confident researcher I've ever admired.
"Let's start with your sampling protocol. Can you walk us through how you collected the water and soil samples?"
I do, explaining in detail my systematic approach including the grid pattern I used across the watershed, the depth at which I collected soil samples, the collection methods, and the chain of custody documentation. Patricia takes notes, nodding occasionally.
"And you conducted the chemical analyses yourself?"
"The preliminary field tests, yes. But I also sent samples to two independent labs for verification. One at Clemson University and one private environmental testing facility in Charlotte." I pull out the lab reports. "Their findings confirmed my field results."
One of the state officials speaks up. "Dr. Sinclair, your report indicates contamination levels that are frankly alarming. Are you confident in these numbers?"
"Completely confident. The contamination is severe and widespread.
Heavy metals, industrial solvents, synthetic compounds that have no natural source in that ecosystem.
" I flip to the relevant section of my binder.
"And the contamination pattern clearly points to a single source. The EnvironTech facility."
Robert Long clears his throat. "If I may interject?—"
"You may not," Patricia says firmly. "You'll have your opportunity to question Dr. Sinclair after we've finished. Please wait your turn, Mr. Long."
He sits back, his expression tight with barely controlled irritation.
Patricia continues. "You mentioned in your report that you had assistance from local residents in identifying contamination sites. Can you elaborate on that?"
This is tricky territory. I need to acknowledge Ethan and Hunter's contributions without revealing too much about the pack.
"I worked with Ethan Wilder, an independent researcher who's been documenting similar contamination patterns across the Appalachian region.
He had valuable comparative data that helped establish this wasn't an isolated incident.
" I pause. "I also consulted with local land management.
These are people who've lived in the area for generations and noticed changes in wildlife behavior, plant health, water quality. "
"These local consultants—did they have any scientific training?"
"Some did. Others had decades of practical experience in land management and environmental observation. Indigenous knowledge and local expertise are valuable data sources, particularly when combined with rigorous scientific methodology."
Patricia looks satisfied with that answer. We continue for another hour, going through every aspect of my research. The mutation patterns in local flora, the timeline of contamination spread, and projections for long-term environmental damage if left unaddressed.
Finally, Patricia turns to the EnvironTech lawyers. "Mr. Long, you and your team may now question Dr. Sinclair."
Long stands, buttoning his suit jacket with deliberate precision. "Dr. Sinclair, let's talk about your credentials. You have a PhD in environmental science from Clemson, correct?"
"That's correct."
"And how long have you been out of graduate school?"
"I completed my doctorate two years ago. I'm currently a postdoctoral researcher."
"So, relatively inexperienced in the field." He says it like a statement, not a question.
"I have six years of research experience, including my graduate work. I've published fifteen peer-reviewed papers and contributed to three major environmental assessments." I keep my voice level. "I'm early in my career, but I'm qualified to conduct this research."
"Are you qualified to make the kinds of claims you're making about my client?" He picks up my report. "You're accusing EnvironTech of systematic environmental poisoning spanning years. That's a serious charge to level based on a few weeks of sampling."
"I'm not leveling charges. I'm presenting data. The contamination exists. That's not in dispute. The source of that contamination, based on chemical composition and spatial distribution, is the EnvironTech facility." I meet his eyes. "The data speaks for itself."
"Does it? Or are you interpreting the data to fit a predetermined conclusion?" He flips through the pages. "You arrived in Willow Creek to study plant mutations. Isn't it possible you found contamination and simply looked for the nearest industrial facility to blame?"
"No. I traced the contamination backward from the mutation sites. The spatial pattern clearly indicates?—"
"The spatial pattern as interpreted by a researcher with two years of post-graduate experience." He cuts me off smoothly. "Dr. Sinclair, isn't it true that you're romantically involved with Hunter Turner, who owns the majority of the land in question?"
I feel Hunter's anger spike through the bond, sharp and immediate. I push back calm, trying to keep him from storming in here.
"My personal life is not relevant to the scientific validity of my research."
"Isn't it? You're asking us to believe that you've conducted objective research while living in a community that would directly benefit from shutting down my client's facility.
A community where you're personally and romantically entangled with the primary landowner.
" Long leans forward. "That's not objectivity, Dr. Sinclair. That's advocacy."
Patricia interrupts. "Mr. Long, unless you have questions about Dr. Sinclair's actual methodology or findings, I suggest you move on."
"I'm establishing bias, which goes directly to the reliability of her testimony." He turns back to me. "Dr. Sinclair, have you received any compensation from Mr. Turner or the Willow Creek community for your research?"
"No."
"Has Mr. Turner provided you with housing, meals, transportation, or any other support during your time there?"
I hesitate, and Long pounces on it.
"Dr. Sinclair? Has he or hasn't he?"
"We're in a relationship. We spend time together, eat meals together, like any couple would." I force myself to stay calm. "But he hasn't compensated me for my research. I've funded this work entirely through my position at Clemson."
"A position you've apparently abandoned to stay in Willow Creek indefinitely."
"I've arranged a remote work agreement with my university.
I'm continuing my research while maintaining my academic affiliation.
" I'm gripping the edge of the table now, trying to keep my composure.
"And again, my personal choices have no bearing on the chemical composition of the soil and water samples I collected. "
One of the EPA investigators speaks up. "Mr. Long, do you have any actual challenges to Dr. Sinclair's methodology or findings? Because so far you've only questioned her personal life."
Long's jaw tightens. "I'm challenging her objectivity, which is fundamental to scientific inquiry."
"The independent lab results corroborate her findings," Patricia points out. "Are you suggesting those labs are also biased?"
"I'm suggesting that Dr. Sinclair chose those labs knowing they would support her predetermined conclusions."
"That's absurd," I say before I can stop myself. "I sent blind samples to both facilities. They had no idea what they were testing or where the samples came from. Their results independently verified my field analyses."
Long changes tactics. "Let's talk about your sampling locations. How did you decide where to collect samples?"
"Systematic grid pattern across the watershed, with additional targeted sampling at sites showing visible contamination or unusual plant growth."
"And who showed you these sites of 'unusual plant growth'?"
Damn. He's trying to circle back to Hunter and the pack.
"I conducted my own field surveys, using standard ecological assessment protocols. I also consulted topographical maps, historical land use data, and?—"
"And local residents with vested interests in blaming my client for environmental problems." Long picks up a different document.
"Dr. Sinclair, isn't it true that the Willow Creek community has historically been resistant to outside development?
That they've opposed multiple commercial projects over the years? "
"I wouldn't know. I've only been there a few weeks."
"But you're close enough to the community to be romantically involved with their primary landowner. Close enough that you're planning to stay there permanently. Surely you know about their anti-development stance."
