CHAPTER 3

FRANKIE

“There’s a job for you.”

I stare at Adrian, waiting for him to continue, but he just rolls his eyes and shifts back to his computer. “What kind of job is it this time?” I ask.

“A request has come in for our most capable enforcer. Your presence is required at Valkyrie Tower.”

“What?”

I choke out.

Valkyrie Tower? There’s no fucking way I can go there.

“You heard me. Wren Valkyrie needs an enforcer. There are issues within his territory…vampires are being killed and his wardens have called him for assistance in the matter. He requires someone with extensive knowledge in combat, research and the ability to go undercover if necessary.”

“Send someone else, Adrian.”

“I can’t do that.”

“Why the fuck not? Send Ryan. Fuck, even Jordan is better suited to deal with that bullshit. I don’t want to get directly involved with vampires.”

“Have you forgotten that I’m a vampire as well? A Fae and a shifter would draw more attention than a human. Humans are easier to slip in, and their allure is enough to entice any vampire.”

“So, you’re using me as bait for the sick fuck that’s knocking off fangers?”

“You best mind your tongue. You better not speak like that in front of the King.”

“King,”

I scoff. “He’s no King of mine.”

“You are an enforcer being paid by him, so have some respect. You should be happy that I’m sending you. I’m acknowledging the fact that you are the best in my unit.”

“Thanks,”

I mumble, crossing my arms across my chest.

I’m not happy about this at all. This entire situation is bullshit. I know all about Wren Valkyrie and his ways. He’s ruthless and bloodthirsty. He rips through his blood whores like they’re nothing and leaves nothing but destruction in his wake. The last thing I want to do is be near that fucking psychopath. I hate vampires…always have. I tolerate Adrian because he pulled me from a dark time in my past. I shudder at the memory and slam it back down into the darkest corner of my mind.

“Adrian, please…is there no way to get out of this? Tell him I’m unavailable. There has to be something else…anything else I could be doing instead of this.”

“Do you think you can’t handle it?”

He gets up from his chair and moves to stand in front of me.

Adrian is a good-looking dude. His lean, muscular build, short blonde hair and bright blue eyes would have anyone else fawning over him, but I know the truth about him too, and there’s nothing about him that’s kind.

“No, I know I could handle it, but I don’t want to.”

“Too bad. This is an order, enforcer Denali.”

“Fine,”

I hiss out. “When do I have to be there?”

He smirks at me and shifts back to his desk to grab a folder, handing it to me. “You’re meeting him in an hour.”

I move to turn away from him and he grips my jaw hard. His eyes flash iridescent for a moment and I’m fighting back the bile rising in my throat as he leans in closer to my face. “Don’t fuck this up. Do you understand me?”

I try to pull away from him, but his grip tightens further. I’m fighting back the urge to run him through with my dagger and I let out a slow breath as I try to tamper down my anger.

“Yes, Sir,”

I say quietly.

“Good. Now run along before I decide to change my mind in allowing you to romp around the city free.”

My heart is trying to beat out of my chest as I turn and walk out of the office, away from him.

I fucking hate him.

I hate Adrian with a passion, but I have no choice. I have no where else to go and I can’t leave him without his say. I’m tied down to him and I fucking hate myself for ever being so weak as to allow that. I’m trapped until the day I die.
