chapter 3

I thought, "Divorce? Fine. But I won't let him get his way easily."

I want him to pay the most painful price for what he has done."

A few days later, Anna suddenly had a high fever in the middle of the night.

Her little face was flushed, and her whole body was burning hot.

I was terrified, holding her, completely at a loss.

My first reaction was to call Vincent, my voice trembling and choked with sobs. "Vincent, Anna has a high fever. Come back quickly, let's take her to the hospital!"

On the other end of the line, there was a noisy background.

Vincent's voice sounded impatient. "If she has a fever, just take her to the hospital. What's the point of calling me?"

"I have an important project here at the company, with several bosses around. How can I leave?"

"You take her to the hospital first. I'll come over when I'm done."

I sneered inwardly, "Important project? Is it that illegitimate daughter of yours causing trouble again?"

I hung up the phone and, holding the feverish Anna alone, took a cab to the hospital in the cold night wind.

I handled everything alone with Annaregistration, payment, tests, and IVcompletely exhausted.

Anna lay on the hospital bed with an IV, crying her heart out. It felt like a knife cutting through my heart.

After settling her down, I went to the nurse's station to find a nurse.

But at the end of the pediatric corridor, I saw a familiar figure.

It was Vincent.

He was carefully supporting Amelia, both of their faces full of worry.

They were surrounding a doctor, whispering something.

I instinctively hid in the corner.

I could only hear Amelia's tearful voice. "Doctor, why is Lucia's rejection reaction still so severe?"

She suddenly became agitated, pounding Vincent's chest hard. "It's all your wife's fault!"

"A few days ago, the nurses told me she even called to inquire about Lucia's condition!"

"Does she know something? Is she trying to harm our daughter?"

Vincent held her tightly, gently comforting her.

His voice was a tenderness I had never heard before.

He said, "Babe, don't be afraid, I'm here."

"She knows nothing, just making wild guesses."

"Don't worry, once Lucia fully recovers, I'll divorce her."

"By then, our family will never be apart again."

I leaned against the cold wall, feeling like all the blood in my body had frozen.

So, in his heart, Anna and I are the ones who should be abandoned.

Im completely disappointed in him.

He not only took our money but also blamed all the misfortunes on me.

I didnt listen any further and turned back to the ward.

Looking at the sleeping, Anna just on the,-bed Anna, I wiped away my tears, my the -eyes became firm.

I must win this battle.

Vincent showed up in Anna's ward at noon the next day.

He carried a bag of fruit, with fake exhaustion on his face.

He said, "You've worked hard. Something came up at the company last night, I really couldn't leave."

I didn't look at him, just said calmly, "Anna's fever has gone down."

He pretended to check Anna's forehead, then sat down beside me.

He held my hand, putting on a sorrowful expression. "There's something, I don't know how to tell you."

I looked at him, waiting for his act.

His eyes reddened, and his voice choked. "My mom was diagnosed with severe heart disease back home. She needs bypass surgery, and the cost is 300,000 dollars."

He took a piece of paper from his bag and handed it to me.

It was a forged critical illness notice.

The hospital seal on it was crooked.

He said, "Our family savings were all invested in a friend's project before, and now we can't withdraw them. The only way to save my mom now is..."

He paused, looked up, his eyes full of "hope" and "pleading."

He said, "The solution is to sell the house your parents bought for you."

As he spoke, he knelt in front of me.

A man with only one kidney, for his ex-girlfriend and illegitimate daughter, knelt before me, crying and begging me to sell the only security my parents gave me.

He continued his hypocritical plea, "I beg you, save my mom! As long as you're willing to sell the house, I'll listen to you for the rest of my life, I promise to repay you!"

Looking at his utterly hypocritical face and that broken body, the last trace of attachment in my heart turned to ashes.

I laughed, a laugh filled with utter sorrow.

I helped him up and gently wiped away the fake tears on his face.

"Alright, I'll sell it," I said softly. "Give me the property deed."
