The Stag

The Cerynean stag was sacred to Artemis and had golden horns.

Hercules chased it for a full year. Eventually the stag took refuge on a mountain and Hercules shot and wounded it as it crossed a stream.

He was now able to catch it, and he threw it over his shoulders and started to head back, but Artemis and her brother Apollo stopped him, angry that he had tried to kill the sacred animal.
