Chapter 2 Meeting at the Dock

After several days of rocking on the boat, we finally docked.

I slung my bundle over my back and stepped off. At a glance I spotted a flag with the character "Pei" on it.

Good. The Pei family had sent someone to meet me.

I walked toward him.

"Let's go."

The man holding the flag seemed stunned and just stared at me.

I frowned. "Aren't you from the Pei family? The Pei family of Jiangdu."

Only then did he react, asking somewhat cautiously, "You are… Miss Wen?"

I nodded.

He led me to a carriage and kindly reminded me, "Miss Wen, today Second Master came in person to meet you. He has something he wants to say to you."

Second Master came personally?

I froze, suddenly nervous.

I wasn't ready to face my betrothed directly yet.

Especially since he was supposedly dissatisfied with me…

While I was still dazed, a long, slender hand lifted the carriage curtain.

I looked up and met a pair of cool, distant eyes.

The man inside wore a moon-white brocade robe that fit him perfectly. His figure was lean and upright, elegant and refined like moonlight on jade—impossibly noble.

For a moment I was stunned.

But then I remembered the rumors I'd heard on the way and snapped back to reality.

No matter how good-looking or noble he seemed, he looked down on me. What was there to like?

I stepped into the carriage and said, "If Second Master Pei has something to say, just say it directly."

"Not in a hurry."

His phoenix eyes fixed on me. His thin lips parted slightly, his voice cool and low.

"Miss Wen has traveled far and must be tired. Let's return to the residence first so you can rest properly."
