6. Law

CHAPTER 6

Law

Cap: Get your ass to my office now!

F uck. I heard the beeping, but I’d wanted to ignore it for a little bit longer. I’ve spent the last twelve hours loving every beautiful inch of Nell’s sexy body, and I have no desire to do anything but that for at least another twelve.

But duty calls.

Taking her so many times without a condom was a rookie move, but I had to. I’m fucking lying to her, and they keep piling up. I know as soon as she finds out, she’s going to try and distance herself from me. Nell is strong in so many ways, but when it comes to her heart, she’s as fragile as glass. I hadn’t meant for this to happen. Not this way, but I need her tied to me.

Law: On my way.

It’s after midnight, and she’s asleep for the night, so I quietly crawl from the bed and leave a note on her nightstand saying I had to run home to grab some clothes, and I’ll be back soon. Just in case she wakes up.

The minute I walk into my empty downtown precinct, I know Cap is pissed. Standing in his doorway, his eyes on his watch, he says. “You were with her, weren’t you?”

What the…? How in the hell does he know about Nell?

Fucking Jack.

“I was.” No point in lying.

“Jack wants this wrapped up, so put your dick away and get your head in the game. No use ruining your undercover gigs on your last sting because of a girl. Is she even legal? Never mind, don’t answer that, I don’t want to have to arrest you now.” Jesus, he’s chatty tonight.

“My head is in the game. She is legal. This will be my last UC, period. I want back on the streets after this.” His brows raise at my comment. I like undercover work, and I’m fucking good at it, but I know things will only become crazier if I’m recruited to narcotics like I’d been aiming for.

“You done with narco?” He’s shocked, obviously. Infiltrating high schools and cleaning up the drug scene is one of the best ways to be recruited into the narcotics task force, and it was no secret that was my goal for a long time.

“Things change.” I shrug.

“Because of a girl?” I don’t answer him; there’s no point. “Fuck sakes, Law. I taught you better than that.” He should be angry because he did, but even he wouldn’t have been able to resist the pull of a woman who was destined to be his. And that’s exactly what Nell is to me.

Mine.

“What did you call me here in the middle of the night for?” I redirect him.

His glare lets me know he won’t forget. “Jack called me, said he saw that Dallas punk you’ve been cozying up to accept a large package from a Trent Richards once the school cleared out today. Tried to find you but you were mysteriously gone, and so was the girl.” His amused grin indicates he’s not nearly as annoyed with me as he’s led me to believe.

“The math teacher?” I laugh because that guy is as stuck up as they come. I never would have guessed. “Does he have video?” Cap nods. “I’ll bust them both tomorrow then.” And I can be done lying to my girl.

“I want you to make a buy first. He’s begun to trust you now, right?” I shrug, I don’t think a drug dealer ever really trusts anyone, but if I catch him when he’s high, I could do it. “Well, buy first, make sure it’s drugs, then we’ll arrest them.”

“Fine.” I grudgingly agree. “Can I go now?” I don’t want Nell waking up with me gone.

“Yeah, we’re done. Go.” Without another word, I’m out. I stop by my house first, so I’m not a complete liar and grab a change of clothes and head back to my swan.

It’s barely two in the morning when I pull up into her driveway and see a shadow moving around the living room of her house. “Fucking hell.” I hate that her father leaves her alone here for such long periods for this very reason.

Lucky for her, I come packing. Unlucky for this asshole who’s about to get a beatdown.

Cutting the engine of my car, I grab my gun from the glove box and close the door quietly, heading for the back entrance that I left from earlier. Pulling out the key I took from Nell, I silently unlock the deadbolt and push on the door, leaving it open because it squeaks when it closes. Entering the living room where I last observed the intruder, gun raised, I see a figure sitting on the couch with a beer in hand.

Confused about this man’s actions, it only hits me as I’m about to press the barrel of my gun to the back of his head and say, “Don’t fucking move,” that it could be her father since she told me he would be home sometime later in the day or the next.

“Who in the fuck are you?” he yells, standing, ignoring my order.

“I should be asking you that,” I snap back.

“I own this fucking house.” For any other man, Mr. Tucker would be intimidating in size. He has an easy thirty pounds on me but stands at my height.

Son of a bitch. Reaching over to the wall, I flick on the light after I quickly holster and hide my weapon. I don’t get a chance to say anything else as barks out, “Who the fuck are you, and why are you in my fucking house?”

Not the way I wanted to meet this man. “Law Brentwood. I’m Nell’s boyfriend.” I’m so fucking much more than that.

He eyes me up and down, taking in my size, and likely, everything else. “You ain’t no boy. And you sure as shit aren’t in high school.”

I clench my jaw, hating that I’m about to lie through my teeth again. “No sir, I’m no boy. But I do go to school with Nell. Have for a few weeks now.” I try to keep to a partial truth.

“Law?” I hear Nell’s soft voice as her delicate steps come racing down the stairs. “What’s with all the noise?” She stops cold when she sees her father glaring at me. “Daddy!” She races into his arms and wraps her limbs around his neck.

The love I see in his eyes for this girl is enough for me to let go of the anger I have over him leaving her alone. I’m still annoyed about it, but I won’t be as antagonistic about it.

“Hey, baby girl, I missed you.”

“I missed you, too. How come you’re home so early?” It’s like I’m not even in the fucking room.

“Last load wasn’t ready, so I told them they could wait, and I’d pick up another next week.” His stare strays to me again, and the questions return. “Who’s he, and why is he in my house?”

“Oh!” Nell lets her dad go to turn and look at me. “This is Law. He’s my…friend.”

“Boyfriend,” I growl. I am not getting fucking friend zoned after I spent so many hours with my dick buried in her intoxicating heat.

“Boyfriend, friend, which is he, Nell?” her father asks.

“Umm…” This fucking girl. I’m gonna tan her ass.

“Boyfriend, lover, other half, soulmate, I don’t fucking care what you call me, but she’s mine,” I answer instead.

Nell’s eyes glow with unshed tears and approval.

Her father’s darken, and I’m fairly sure he’s plotting my death.
