CHAPTER 4

Logan

A s far as dates go, I’d say the one with Brynlee last night was the best I’ve ever had. She’s nothing like I anticipated when I first laid eyes on her. I was able to convince her to stay the night in the spare room, and while she showers, I’m making her breakfast.

Carter and Hunter should be back here later this afternoon, which gives me a few more hours to spend with Bryn alone. Getting a better idea of what she wants in life and how to make her fall in love with me.

I’ve never been a believer in love at first sight or soulmates, but I’m fucking converted, and I don’t mind one bit. If she’ll have me, I’m here for life.

After speaking with her about her family late into the night, I’ve gleaned that she has no interest in money. Hunter has been her priority for years. For someone so young, it’s a little heartbreaking but also inspiring. To be that selfless is a unique quality in anyone.

Pouring a coffee as I hear Bryn coming down the stairs, I place it on the island as she enters the kitchen. Looking fresh from her shower but shy over how and why she’s here, I can’t hide my crooked smile.

“Good morning.” When she reaches for the coffee, I grip her wrist and pull her closer. Placing a gentle kiss on her lips before she can protest, I’m pulling away and turning back to the stove.

Scooping the breakfast medley onto two plates, I carry them to the island and sit beside her. Her silence doesn’t bother me, but I can tell she's unsure of what to say. With a muttered, “Thank you,” she digs into her plate.

“The boys won’t be home for a few hours,” I say, watching her chew slowly as she tries her hardest not to look over at me. “Leaves us quite a bit of time to get better acquainted.” I wink when I see her give me a quick look, and she nearly chokes.

After taking a sip of her coffee and swallowing, Brynlee turns slightly to face me. “Acquainted how, exactly?”

Pushing my plate forward, I turn to fully face her. “You want honesty here?”

“Preferably.”

“I think I could love you. I can see a future with you…us…Carter, Hunter. Together. I spent all night thinking about it, and truthfully, I say fuck your family and do what you want.” She opens her mouth to protest, but I raise a hand to stop her. “I know. You won’t risk abandoning Hunt like that, and I respect you for it. But I also think, in four months’ time, we could be happy, in love, and married. You just have to be open to the idea of us.”

I can see her eyes shining bright with affection and maybe hope as she thinks through what I've said.

“I don’t know anything about you.” The way she says that makes me believe that’s not entirely true.

“Ask me anything, then.”

She thinks for a minute before responding, “What’s your biggest flaw?”

“My arrogance.” I’ve been told many times that I’m too arrogant. It’s the all-star in me. I've played for too long with people telling me how overly important to a team I am, and I let it go to my head.

“What are the five most important things someone should know about you?” Shit. She’s going for broke here.

“Carter is, and always will be, my top priority. I’ve been married and divorced. I’m worth millions, but I don’t live like it. Or at least I don’t think I do. My love of baseball rivals my love for sex. And when I love, I’m a bit possessive. I also don’t share well with others.” I can tell I’ve shocked her with my statement about baseball and sex.

“That’s…enlightening.”

“Your turn. Complete honesty,” I remind her too. “Biggest flaw.”

“I’m too loyal.” I’m glad she said it.

“Five most important things?”

I’m fascinated as she thinks about it for a minute. “Hunter is more like my son than my nephew, even though we’re only a few years apart. I love my family even though they treat me more like a burden than anything else. I have dreams of marriage and lots of babies one day. My father paid off the driving instructor when I got my license because I couldn’t parallel park.” Her cheeks pinken adorably at that confession.

“One more. Something nobody else knows. Tell me the most vulnerable thing about you.” Standing, I turn Brynlee so that she’s facing me and step between her legs. “Tell me something intimate.”

My whispered words work because without hesitation, she blurts out, “I’m a virgin.” And like a wolf after his prey, I pounce. Sipping at her lips like a starving man, I take everything she's willing to give me.
