Epilogue

Iwalked across the stage, shaking hands with all the University bigwigs.

“Congratulations Katie,” they handed me a slip of paper. Not my actual degree. That would come in the mail later. But I’d finally done it.

I smiled as the camera man snapped a shot of me and my professors. I scanned the crowd and felt my heart light up when I caught Justin beaming at me. He waved.

I waved back, like an idiot.

After that life changing day with Ms. Darling, Justin had fired Midge, uncaring about the repercussions. We spent months waiting for the other shoe to drop, for the news about us to hit the tabloids, but it never came.

Sometimes I wondered if Midge grew a conscience. I’d like to think my words had gotten through to her—that she learned there was more to life.

I’d quit working at Justin’s clinic after that day, and instead started an internship at Darling Data Incorporated.

Ms. Darling made sure it was a paid internship and once I graduated, I was set to start full time with an impressive signing bonus that I planned to use part of and treat Justin out to an expensive, luxury restaurant.

I’d insisted on paying, and Justin had let me, dropping numerous hints that he’d take care of dessert.

My skin heated every time I thought about it.

“Wow,” Zoe said from beside me, drawing me from my thoughts. She was glancing at the stands where Justin continued to wave and smile. “Is that him?”

I grinned. “Yup. That’s the man I owe everything to,” I said and blew him a kiss.
