Chapter 1 Tickets for Beijing

On the Hospital bed, Xie Mingming shot me a blunt look.

“Mom, are you confused? Didn’t you say my Dad died a long time ago?”

I forced a dry laugh. “Ah. He was sick then. I thought he would die. Who knew he got better.”

Xie Mingming’s eyes suddenly went bright.

“Then can I get better like Dad too, and go home?”

I nodded. “Of course!”

Kids were easy to fool. A few words, and he believed me.

I left the Ward and opened my phone again.

On the screen was a news report. It said the president of the Zhou Group had lost the ability to have children after a car crash.

At first I thought it was someone with the same name.

Then my finger slipped, and I tapped in. The man in the photo did not only share Zhou Muyan’s name. He looked like him too.

There should not have been a coincidence like that in this world.

There was only one possibility. Zhou Muyan had lied to me as well.

He had never been the poor boy I thought he was.

In that moment, I did not know whether I should feel glad or sad.

But at least for Xie Mingming, it was good news.

I bought high-speed rail tickets for early the next morning.

When my mom brought food over, I was packing.

“Going on a business trip again? You want to dump the Child on me again?

“What did I say back then? I told you not to have the Child. You would not listen.

“And after you had him, you keep dumping him on me every day. I should be enjoying my years, but I am stuck at home raising your Child.”

I glanced at the person already awake on the bed and lowered my voice.

“Mom, can you not say this in front of the Child? He is little, but he still takes it to heart.”

“Oh. So you did it, and I am not even allowed to talk about it...”

“Mom, if you have nothing better to do, hold Xie Mingming more. Tomorrow I am taking him to Beijing.”

I cut her off.

She froze, then pulled me outside.

“You scraped together the Surgery money?

“No. Where did you get that much? These years you raised the Child alone. That was hard enough. How would you have anything left?”

I kept my head down. I did not plan to tell my mom yet.

“Just don’t worry about it. Once I leave this time, I don’t know when I can come back.

“From now on you can enjoy your quiet life. Xie Mingming and I will not drag you down again.”

My mom’s face fell on the spot.

“You rotten girl. You did this on purpose. You know your mom has always had a sharp tongue and a soft heart.

“Forget it. I am not talking to you. I am going to see my grandson.”
