Chapter 9

Chapter Nine

Ihated leaving Laikyn, but the needs of the pack called.

I walked into the club, glancing around at the dozens of faces staring back at me.

Heads bowed in respect as I strolled past. A few murmured words of respect, others nodded.

I shook my head and walked to the raised dais that usually held the DJ.

Xan stood there, his mate next to him, making my lips twitch.

“Your balls get lost?” I asked.

Xan raised his middle finger, pulling Breezy closer to his side, kissing her full on the lips in front of the crowd. “Yeah, I see that you have.”

“Alright, settle down, everyone,” I yelled, loud enough to be heard without a microphone.

“I’ve got some shit to say, and I don’t want to repeat myself.

I called this meeting, and for those who are not here, I will send this out through the pack link.

However, I had hoped all available would make it.

” I glanced around, making eye contact with each member I saw.

The Iron Wolves consisted of more than just a biker club.

We had doctors, lawyers, nurses, teachers, businessmen, and women.

The club was where they could come and let loose, be themselves without fear of the human world finding out about them.

We’d built the apartments attached to the back years ago, going deep underground to create a sanctuary away from prying human eyes in case of an emergency.

There, they could safely live and hide if the need arose.

Now, I wondered if the underground world would be more of a danger than a sanctuary with this new threat.

Taking a deep breath, I explained what we’d found in Kansas City, then told them of the threat on the road near my home.

Gasps and cries of outrage filled the large room.

I let them vent for a minute or so, then raised my fist. When the murmurs continued, I let my wolf come forward.

My low growl rent the air. Instant obedience settled around me.

“Like I was trying to explain. We are now aware and can prepare. I want each of you to be on guard. Nobody is to go out alone until we eliminate the threat. Period. I don’t want any of you to leave with anyone you don’t personally know.

If you have any doubts, call for help. I’d rather have a bunch of false calls than the alternative.

Feel me?” I let them assimilate my words before continuing.

“Now, it’s time for the fun part. I could tell you what to look for, but for you to truly know, I’m going to show you.

It’s gonna be a mindfuck of epic proportions.

The twin vamps who helped me are okay for bloodsuckers, but I want you to trust your gut as well. ” I breathed out heavily.

“I’ll add my strength to you, Alpha.” Xan breathed out steadily.

I nodded in his direction. “Here we go, boys and girls. I’d lie and say this ain’t gonna hurt, but it might.

” I let the silence settle, then I opened my mind to the pack.

Long moments passed, emotions clogged the room, thickening the air.

Eyes filled with fear, but I continued until I was sure they all had the knowledge needed.

“The Cordells? They seem honorable?” Xan spoke low.

“Yeah, but sometimes honor can be forgotten when a man wants something badly enough. I think they realized what they wanted wasn’t really theirs to begin with, and most are cool about it. I’d rip their fucking throats out and shit down their necks if they tried to take what’s mine,” I promised him.

Rueful amusement filled Xan’s gaze. “Nice description.”

“And on that note, I got to get to work.” Breezy interrupted us.

“You gonna let him have his balls back before you leave?” I quirked a brow.

Breezy patted Xan’s dick. “His balls are perfectly fine where they are. Oh, and I’ll let Laikyn know what you said. I’m sure she’ll find it hilarious, too.” She smiled sweetly. “Not.” She danced away before I could stop her.

“What the hell is she talking about?” I pointed at the blonde with pink and purple hair. The female whom my second thought the sun rose and set on her perfect head.

Xan stared after his mate. “I think Laikyn is going to be stopping in at the hospital or some shit. Fuck if I know.”

“Bullshit.” I jumped from the dais, already opening my link to Laikyn in my mind. “Laikyn, what the hell is this shit about you going to the hospital today?” My tone was more wolf than man.

“Hello to you, too, Kellen. Remember, I am a doctor? Doctors need to work. Hospitals are where doctors usually do that.”

I pictured her rolling her green eyes while she finger-combed her hair. “That is five, baby. Now, let’s start again. Why didn’t you tell me you had plans to go to the hospital today?” There, I sounded a little more human.

Laikyn breathed loudly through their link, a sure sign she was trying to stay calm, a sound I heard like a deep gust of air.

“We didn’t do a whole lot of talking, and then you were already gone when I got up.

I’d always planned on going to the hospital today.

I have a meeting with the board about a position there. It’s a formality, really.”

I didn’t stop to talk to anyone as I left the club, raising my head, I inhaled before I hopped into my rig. “I’m coming to get you. Consider me your glorified chauffeur.”

“Kellen, seriously, that’s crazy. I could be hours. Don’t you have a pack to manage?”

I could give zero fucks about anyone or anything except keeping my mate safe.

Instead of telling her that, I floored it to my home.

“I’ll be there shortly. What time do you need to be at the hospital?

” When I heard the time, I was disappointed we wouldn’t have time for a little afternoon delight.

Her husky laugh let me know she caught my thoughts.

“I promise to make it up to you. I’d better go so I can finish getting ready. Love you,” Laikyn said.

Even within the link, I enjoyed hearing her say the words. “Right back atcha,” I assured her.

Using all my senses, like Damien and Lucas had shown me, was getting easier. When I pulled into my garage, I made sure the wards were set and secure. My cell buzzed, making me pause in my steps. Looking at the caller ID, I didn’t recognize the number.

“Styles here,” I growled.

“Hello, Kellen. My name is Niall. I’m the Alpha of the Mystic Wolves. I believe we have a lot to discuss.”

I gripped the phone in my hand. The deep baritone let me know the man was indeed an Alpha in his own right. “Is Taya alright?”

“She will be. Although she’s been through a lot, our healers have assured me she will be fine in time.”

I nodded. The female had been kidnapped and brutalized by a rival pack a few months back.

A young female held at the mercy of human men and wolves who had no honor sometimes chose death over living with the memory of what they’d been through.

Taya was stronger than anyone had given her credit for.

She and Xan had been casual, but I was sure the woman wanted more, until Xan found his mate in Breezy.

I shook my head, glad she’d found a new home with the Mystic Wolves.

“That’s not why I’m calling you.” Niall’s voice cut through my musings.

The ominous words made me stop in my tracks. “Spit it the fuck out, man.”

Niall laughed. “I knew I’d like you. Alright, here it is. Our Fey have seen some strange shit and said you would need some added protection.”

I took the phone away from my ear, looked at it, then brought it back. “Did you say, Fey? Like little beings with pointy ears and wings?”

Damn! My world was getting all kinds of messed up.

“Dude, you’ve been watching Lord of the Rings too much,” Niall said to someone in the background.

“My mate said she’d love a pair of fairy wings, too.

Anyway, no, the Fey don’t have those. You are probably freaking a bit, and I don’t blame you.

The truth is, if we exist, then why is it hard to imagine there are other beings?

Of course, I didn’t have any idea there were vampires.

I thought they were truly mythical. You know, like in movies and books, types of creatures.

So, back to the message I was to give you.

You are going to need the help of a Fey, and not another vamp, to beat this one. ”

“Awesome. Where do I find this Fey?” My eyes lit on my mate walking in wearing a pair of pale yellow capri pants and a white top that fit snuggly to her breasts. The button-down shirt drew my gaze, making me want to use my teeth to rip it open.

“We have someone who wants to come and help, if you are willing.”

“How will I know this person is not a danger to us?” I held my hand out to Laikyn, needing to feel her in my arms.

A heavy sigh interrupted my musings. “Kellen, as one Alpha to the other, you know we could open a link and share information. Do you want to do that?”

Without having met the other man, I wasn’t willing to do that. “You come here, and I’ll agree. Over the phone, that would be no.”

“That’s what I thought. Trust me. When you see the Fey, you’ll know it’s safe. Well, you’ll know they are not there to harm you or your pack. Believe me when I say they are much better friends than enemies, and right now, we need more friends than enemies,” Niall growled.

“When will this Fey be here, and are they male or female?”

“Her name is Jennaveve. She’s a tiny blonde creature. You can’t miss her. She is like a drill sergeant and will try to boss you around. I’d say not to let her, but yeah, good luck with that.”

Feminine laughter in the background had my eyes narrowing. “Is she old or young? You’re being very vague, asshole.”

“Hi, Kellen. May I call you Kellen, or do you prefer Mr. Styles?” Laikyn stiffened at my side.

“Is this Niall’s mate, Alaina?” I asked, pulling my mate closer.
