CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

Two days later, another attempt at meeting new people. This time, a martial arts class. One man tells the group he’s adopted a former racing greyhound called Dougie.

‘His favourite stuffed toy is a carrot,’ he explains. ‘And he won’t let me wash it. I’ll be on Zoom calls for work, and he’ll come into frame and show everyone his nasty carrot. My colleagues think it’s adorable.’

‘Interesting,’ another man says. His eyes are close together, and I can’t look away. ‘If I showed my nasty carrot on a Zoom, I’d get fired.’
