Chapter 1

Noor

I do not believe in failure. I believe in poor planning that produces predictable outcomes which uninformed people then label failure , and I believe that the difference between a successful event and a disaster is, almost always, somebody's spreadsheet.

I tell this to my new assistants on their first day.

I tell them that organization is a moral position.

I tell them that the universe rewards women who color-code, and I show them my tab system, and at least one of them always laughs because they think I'm joking.

I am not joking. I have never been joking about a spreadsheet in my life.

My name is Noor Abbasi. I am twenty-six years old.

I founded Constellation Events three years ago in the second bedroom of a one-bedroom apartment that I was not, technically, allowed to occupy, and I built it into a six-figure business by the time I turned twenty-five, and the only person more surprised by this than my parents was me.

My parents, for the record, are not really surprised.

They just enjoy performing surprise at family functions, because in our family the highest form of love is a slow dawning awe at your child's competence, expressed at the dinner table, in front of as many uncles as can fit in the dining room.

My father is a cardiologist. He came to this country from Karachi at nineteen, on a scholarship that paid for medical school and a winter coat and not much else.

My mother is an architect. She came from Lahore at twenty-two, met my father at a Pakistan Society dinner in Philadelphia, and married him eight months later in a wedding so logistically complicated that I sometimes think I came out of her womb already understanding event planning.

I have one younger brother, Asher, who is twenty-three and a software engineer in Seattle and who calls me twice a week to update me on the dating life he wishes I had.

I have a roommate named Bridget who keeps trying to set me up with men she meets at her CrossFit gym, all of whom are named some variation of Brett.

I have a five-year plan, a ten-year plan, and a contingency plan for both of those plans.

I have a Roth IRA. I have a renter's insurance policy.

I have a label maker that I have named Genevieve, and I am not embarrassed about that, and if you have a problem with it you can take it up with Genevieve.

What I do not have, on this particular Monday morning in the third week of August, is any earthly idea how to handle motorcycle clubs.

I am sitting in the conference room of the Ember Falls Chamber of Commerce.

There is bad coffee in front of me. There is a notepad in front of me.

There is a man named Ron Whitlock at the head of the table, and Ron Whitlock has just informed me, with the breezy confidence of a man who has never planned anything more complicated than a fishing trip, that I am now in charge of the Ember Falls Motorcycle Rally.

"It's our biggest event of the year," Ron says. "Two and a half million in tourism revenue. Vendors come in from six states. The whole town shuts down for it."

"Lovely," I say. I am writing. I am always writing.

"Last year's planner moved to Florida. Took her whole team with her. We're a little behind."

"How far behind?"

"Eight months."

I stop writing. I look up. Ron has the expression of a man who has just admitted to flooding a basement and is hoping you'll find it charming.

"Ron."

"Noor."

"The rally is in eleven weeks."

"Yes."

"And you're handing me a project that should have started in February."

"Yes."

"And you would like it executed flawlessly."

"That is the general idea."

I write this down too. Project transferred 32 weeks behind schedule. Client expectation: flawless execution. Available timeline: 11 weeks. I draw a small box around it and check the box, because I have already accepted the contract in my head and there is no point pretending I haven't.

"Send me the contact list," I say. "All the vendors. All the visiting clubs. Law enforcement. The fire marshal. The mayor's office. Whoever signed off on permits last year. Whoever didn't sign off on permits last year and is angry about it. Send me everything."

"You'll do it?"

"I'll do it."

Ron smiles like a man pardoned. "Noor. You're a savior."

"I'm a contractor. There's a difference."

He laughs. I do not. I am already running cost projections in my head, and somewhere in the lower frontal cortex of my brain a small alarm is going off, and it is saying, very politely, You have never coordinated with motorcycle clubs in your life and you have agreed to coordinate with twelve of them in eleven weeks.

Are you sure? I tell the alarm to be quiet.

The alarm has been wrong before. The alarm was wrong when I quit my corporate job at twenty-three.

The alarm was wrong when I refused a partnership offer at twenty-five from a man who turned out to be embezzling.

The alarm has a track record, and the track record is mixed, and I have learned to listen to it about traffic and ignore it about opportunities.

This, I tell myself, is an opportunity.

I drive home. I open the spreadsheet I have already started in my head.

I name it EFR-2026. I create thirteen tabs.

I fill the first four before dinner. By Wednesday I have a vendor list. By Friday I have spoken to the Chamber's previous planner — Marlene, in Florida, gracious and a little drunk on what sounded like a frozen daiquiri — and I have inherited a folder of contacts that is mostly useful and a list of warnings that is mostly not.

Watch out for the Stallions, she says. Don't promise the Vipers anything in writing.

Diesel from Iron Vow is your best ally; if you can get him to like you, the rest will fall in line.

"And how do I get him to like me?" I ask.

"Honey," Marlene says, "I have no idea. I think he liked me because I once watched him throw a man through a window."

I write this down. Then I cross it out. Then I write it down again, because I'm a completist, and I label the entry intel — possibly hyperbolic.

I meet Diesel on a Tuesday at the Iron Vow compound.

I have prepared. I have read three articles on motorcycle club culture, two of which were sensationalist and one of which was an academic paper from a sociologist at the University of Nevada that called MCs a parallel kinship structure based on chosen affiliation and ritualized hierarchy, which I found genuinely useful and which I have quoted to nobody, because nobody would believe I read it.

I have changed clothes three times. I have settled on a navy blazer over a cream shell, dark jeans, and the kind of low heels that say I am a professional but I am also willing to walk on grass.

I have my tablet. I have my notepad. I have a thermos of black tea because I do not trust anybody else's coffee, and I have a laminated copy of the rally's preliminary schedule, which I will hand to Diesel if he seems receptive.

I park in the visitors' lot. I lock the car. I walk across the gravel toward a building that looks more like a roadhouse than an office, and a man with a gray beard and forearms like cast iron opens the door before I can knock, and he says, "Ms. Abbasi."

"Mr.—"

"Diesel. Just Diesel."

"Diesel. Pleased to meet you."

He shakes my hand. His grip is what I expected — firm, brief, calibrated. He leads me to a back room with a long wooden table and four chairs, and he sits at the head and gestures for me to sit at the side, and he says, "Coffee?"

"I brought tea, thank you."

"Of course you did." His mouth moves. It might be a smile. It might be something else.

I take out the laminated schedule. I take out my tablet.

I take out my notepad. I lay them out in order, the way a surgeon lays out instruments, and I begin.

I walk Diesel through the timeline. The vendor agreements.

The law enforcement coordination. The road closures.

The permit gaps. The vendor blocks. The visiting club roster — twelve clubs confirmed, two on the fence, one I am still trying to track down.

I am crisp and efficient and I do not, at any point, mention that I have read an academic paper about parallel kinship structures.

Diesel listens. He doesn't interrupt. He doesn't take notes. When I finish, he leans back in his chair and looks at me for a long moment, and then he says, "You've done your homework."

"I always do."

"Mm." He drums his fingers once on the table. "Ms. Abbasi. Can I be straight with you?"

"Please."

"You're going to have a problem."

"With which item?"

"With the other clubs."

I wait.

"This town has done this rally for fifteen years," he says.

"We have a system. The system is built on relationships.

When the Chamber hires a new planner — and they've hired a new one twice in fifteen years before you — what they're really doing is asking us to extend trust to a stranger on credit.

We've done it before. We can do it again.

But the other clubs?" He shakes his head.

"They don't know you. They don't know me — well, some of them do, but they don't know how I feel about you, because I don't know how I feel about you yet.

And until they figure that out, they're going to test you.

They're going to delay. They're going to make demands.

They're going to no-show meetings to see if you cancel the event over it.

They're going to do all the things that men in cuts do to women in blazers when the men in cuts don't know what to make of the women in blazers. "

I write this down. I do not know how else to respond to it.

"What do you suggest?" I ask.

"I suggest," Diesel says, "that you find a way to make them take you seriously fast. Or you ask the Chamber for a different contract."

"I don't quit contracts."

"I figured." Now his mouth definitely smiles. "All right, Ms. Abbasi. I'll do my part. Iron Vow will host the rally. We'll cooperate fully. You can use my name with the other clubs, but I'll tell you now — my name buys you a meeting. It doesn't buy you a deal."

"Understood."

"Anything else?"

"One more thing." I close the tablet. I look him in the eye. "I'd like to assign a prospect to my logistics team. A liaison. Someone who can move between your world and mine and translate when necessary."

"You want a prospect on loan."

"For eleven weeks. I'll work around his other duties."

He considers it. He drums his fingers again. Then he says, "I've got a kid. Goes by Jinx. He's been prospecting for two years."

"Two years?"

"Long story. He's hardworking. He'll do whatever you ask him to do. He also breaks things. A lot of things. Some of them on purpose, most of them not."

"That sounds like a liability."

"He's also the best mechanic I've got under thirty, the only one of them who's read the club's full archive, and the kindest human being currently employed in a motorcycle club in this state, which is a low bar but it's still a bar.

You take him or you take nobody, Ms. Abbasi. Those are your choices."

I look at the schedule on the table between us. I look at the eleven weeks I have to make miracles in. I look at Diesel, who is watching me with the patient amusement of a man who has bet on outcomes for a long time and is generally not wrong about them.

"I'll take him," I say.

"Good." He stands. "He's outside. He's been outside for an hour. He didn't want to be late."

"I'm not late," I say. "I'm exactly on time."

"He didn't want to risk it."

I follow Diesel to the front of the building.

He opens the door. I step out into the late-summer light, and I see the parking lot, and I see the row of motorcycles, and I see, leaning against the fender of an old Sportster with a paper coffee cup in one hand and a folded receipt in the other, a young man with red hair the color of a struck match and freckles on the bridge of his nose and a prospect cut over a faded green T-shirt, and he sees me too, and he straightens, and his elbow knocks the side mirror of the Sportster, which swings, which apparently activates some kind of motion-sensitive alarm I did not know motorcycles had, and the alarm starts to wail across the lot like a wounded animal, and the young man flinches, and the coffee cup tips, and a brown river of caffeine descends across the front of his prospect cut, and he looks at me — over the noise, over the coffee, over the chaos he has just personally summoned into existence — and he raises one hand and waves.

I do not wave back. I cannot wave back. My hands are full of laminated schedules and the dawning, terrible certainty that this is the prospect I have just agreed to inherit for eleven weeks.

Diesel, beside me, lets out one long breath through his nose. He says, very quietly, "Welcome to Iron Vow, Ms. Abbasi."

The alarm stops. The young man fumbles in his pocket, finds the key fob, and triumphantly silences his own bike.

He grins at me — and his grin, I will admit, is not a thing I expected.

It is a wide, open, completely defenseless grin, the grin of a man who has never once in his life held a grudge, and it lands somewhere in my chest in a way I have not budgeted for.

I steady myself. I walk across the gravel. I extend my hand. I say, "I'm Noor Abbasi. We're going to be working together."

He looks at his coffee-soaked hand. He looks at mine. He wipes his palm on his jeans. He shakes my hand. His grip is gentle and very warm.

"Callum Brennan," he says. "Road name's Jinx."

"Jinx?"

"Long story. Several stories, actually. None of them end well."

I do not laugh. I will not give him a laugh on the first day. I will, however, file the line away in the back of my mind, in a tab I have not yet labeled, in a folder that does not currently exist, and I will look at it later, when I am alone, and I will decide what to do with it.

"Well, Mr. Brennan," I say. "Let's see if we can change that."
