Chapter Two #2

Pulling up to the scene, the only thing I can make out is the charred remains of the van.

It’s essentially just a shell surrounded by thick smoke as the firefighters work to put out the last of the fire.

Bike parts, or what I believe are bike parts, litter the ground all over the place and I notice a rusted out car sitting on the opposite side of the road.

None of the guys who were on the run are still here as I run up to join Fury at the police tape.

He’s stretching and looking for any signs of his brother.

My best friend is going out of his damn mind with fear for his baby brother and he doesn’t have to be looking at me for me to see it.

“Where the fuck is he?” I hear him shout to no one in particular as an officer starts to head in our direction.

“Can I help you?” the officer asks when he gets close enough.

“My brother was here. Where is he?” Fury questions him and I rest a hand on his shoulder because I can see him about to lose his shit on this cop. It’s the last thing he needs to do right now.

“Two individuals have been taken by ambulance to the hospital. I’m not sure what one they were heading to. It all depends on the injuries and other circumstances,” the cop informs us as Demolition and Vulture step up next to us.

“Call Agony,” I order whoever can reach their phone the fastest. “Officer, whose car is that over there?”

I point at the rust bucket on the side of the road as everyone’s attention moves there.

“As far as we can tell, it belongs to the young woman who was here. It appears as though she tried to save the man who was taken to the hospital. Her body was on top of his and she is injured worse than the paramedics initially believed. The front of her body has almost no injuries though,” he answers as I listen to Demolition on the phone.

He’s demanding what hospital we need to head for and I know he’s about to lose his shit as well.

The officer leaves us alone and we all turn to Demolition as he hangs up his phone.

“They’re on the way to Memorial,” he informs us as we all turn back to our bikes and I notice Tristan and Zach, two of our Prospects, staring at the car I asked about.

“You two know that car?” I question them as I come to a stop at their side.

“If it’s the car we believe it is, yeah, we know it.

Belonged to our foster sister before she aged out of the system,” Tristan answers me, but doesn’t take his eyes off the vehicle in question.

“Don’t know why she’d still have the same car.

She would definitely stop to help someone in trouble.

Our sister used to get in trouble because she always wanted to help someone in need.

Would literally give the shirt off of her own back. ”

“Tow it to the garage for now. Park it out of the way. You take a good look at the car and let me know if it belongs to her or not after it’s at the garage,” I order them as I run to my bike and head out to meet up with the rest of the guys.

***

By the time we get to the hospital, it’s been more than enough time for us to hopefully be able to get an update on Razer.

Fury pushed his bike as hard as he could to get here and I know he’s going to be a damn mess if anything happens to Razer.

We’ll all have to keep an eye on him for a long time if the unthinkable occurs.

Fury runs up to the desk with his dad and uncle right behind him. I’m at his side while everyone else circles us so no one can get close. It’s for everyone else’s protection based on what we’re about to hear.

“Name?” the old woman asks without looking up.

“Raiden Freeland,” Fury answers her as her face pales and I doubt my best friend notices at all. “He was brought in by ambulance from a fire.”

“The doctor will be right out with you,” she says, immediately standing from her seat and disappearing behind the doors.

Dread fills me and I know the news we’re about to get is not going to be good.

I’m not sure if it will be the worst news, but it definitely won’t be good at all.

A man in a white coat over scrubs walks out and doesn’t stop until he’s behind the desk.

The woman doesn’t return with him which tells me all I need to know.

“Family of Raiden Freeland?” he questions as Fury nods in response.

“I’m sorry to inform you Mr. Freeland did not make it.

His heart stopped in the ambulance just after they took off from the scene.

They performed CPR all the way here where we took over measures to restart his heart. It was too late for him.”

“No!” Fury yells out and I hear people behind us scream in fear while feet scuffle around the waiting area. “You’re lyin’ to me. You’ve got him mixed up with someone else. Take me to my brother.”

“I’m sorry, Mr. Freeland. You’ll be asked to identify the body in time, but I can’t allow you to go back right now. Was the young woman brought in with him his wife?” the doctor questions us as I watch Fury lose his shit.

Fury starts punching the walls as he moves to the hallway away from everyone in the waiting area.

Tears are streaming down his face and his dad and uncle can’t get close to him.

I know the doctor was answered by someone, but I don’t know who spoke or what was said.

No one knows about Razer’s personal life other than his blood family and me.

When I can’t stand to see Fury destroy anything else in his despair, I run up behind him and wrap my arms around him so he can’t lash out any longer.

The two of us sink to the floor and I hold my best friend as he breaks down in the middle of the hospital hallway.

We’re once again surrounded by the members of the club to give us some sense of privacy.

I can literally feel Fury shattering into a million pieces knowing he’ll never get to see his baby brother again.

His entire body is shaking and he can hardly breathe with how hard he’s sobbing.

Razer and Fury have been inseparable since they were little boys.

They’ve gotten through every storm together and have relied on each other more than anyone else.

Now, my best friend has lost his brother and I don’t honestly know how he’s going to handle the reality of that situation.

I’m not handling it very good, breaking inside while remaining strong outside for Fury.

He needs me more than I need to lose my shit.

He’ll need us all. Demolition and Vulture too.

The next few days are going to be long, hard, and full of grief as we prepare to bury one of the best men any of us has ever known.
