Chapter 2 #3

“It does. I’ve only just discovered how I feel about you today.

When I was thinking about you going out with Penrod, I have to tell you it put me in a bad mood all morning.

I’ve been telling people I’m sorry since it hit me that I was in love with you.

One nurse said that I looked like I was in love to her, and all I could think about was telling her that I was.

With you.” She asked him what they were to do now.

“I was thinking that we need a house to live in. A place that—do you want children?”

“Yes. I would love to have children with you.” He kissed her again.

“You keep that up, and we’ll never get things done around here.

I would love to look at houses with you.

I have one. Or will have one when your brother gets it back for me.

I suppose I could ask the courts if I could go into it now, but I don’t know what they’ll say. ”

“Ask Axel and see what he has to say about it. Do you have an address?” She gave it to him as she was pulling out her cell to call his brother.

He looked it up on the internet and saw that it was a huge house just the street over from his parents’ home.

Kahana read the facts on the house and was impressed that it had five bedrooms as well as five and a half bathrooms. It was a big formal house that he could see them living in.

“He said that he has the keys to it, and if we wanted to go see it, we could go tonight. Is that all right with you?” He told her that it was so long as she was all right with them living in it.

“You mean if we see it, we might want it? I’m all for that.

I know nothing about the house other than where it is and that it’s furnished. I can’t wait to see it.”

Axel and Mac went with them to the new home.

It was grander than he thought it was going to be, and knowing that all the furniture stayed with it made it seem all the more move-in ready for them.

He particularly liked the home office, and the kitchen was up to date.

The whole house was ready to be used, and he could see them living there for the rest of their lives.

Axel pulled him aside when the two women went to look at the bedrooms.

“You and Debra planning on keeping house together?” He nodded with another sappy grin on his face. “Good. I think you two make a perfect couple, and you’ll be a powerful one too. You a doctor and her an attorney? People will want to come to see you more and more as the weeks go by.”

“What about the house? Can we move into it?” Axel said he’d look into it tomorrow with the other attorneys for the case. “Hopefully it’s a different one than the one who had read the will that Phil provided.”

“These people have been assigned the case when the other firm was arrested. They’ll be fined too, just so you know.

I think they want to get this off their books as much as I do, and they’ve been very good at keeping me informed.

They have seized the money that Phil had taken, and this house was just one more asset that Debra was to get.

Phil got nothing because of the many times that he had to be bailed out.

” He asked how much longer it could take.

“I’m thinking not too much longer. Like I said, they want to get it finished with too, and now that the real will has been read, they’ll be making sure that Debra and Phil get what’s coming to them. ”

“By Phil getting what’s coming to him, I’m assuming that it’s nothing good.” He nodded and said that was right. “Good. He doesn’t deserve anything after the way that he’s treated Debra. To think that the other firm took his word for it that he had the right will. What were they thinking about?”

“Who knows but it’s all done now. Once he has his day in court, you can bet that he’s going to be put back in jail for a long time.

I hope for a few years, but I’m not working on that just yet.

I’m filing claims against his estate, too, what little there is of it, but it will keep him from taking her money.

” He asked how much the estate was worth.

“Billions. Billions upon billions. The old man knew how to invest, and he was a good attorney for all intents and purposes. It was a large firm that she’s getting. With as many as a dozen partners.”

“What would you do with it if it came to you?” he said that he’d give the other attorneys the opportunity to buy it from him and be done with it. “I’m guessing you don’t want to own a large firm now that you’re out on your own.”

“I don’t. The money would be great. But I’m not into babysitting a bunch of attorneys while they whine about their cases.

That’s all it was where I worked. Men and women bitching about how much work they were doing without enough to pay for it.

Some of those people that I worked with were partners and were making six figures off of each case.

I love that I’m on my own and able to take the kind of cases that I want.

” Kahana whistled. “Tell me about it. I could have been that person if I had stayed a bit longer. I want nothing to do with big firms. However, if Debra goes the way I’m going to suggest to her, I’ll take her on as a partner. We could work well together.”

“I believe that she’s been thinking about it too.” He said that he’d mentioned it to her last week about selling the firm. “That’s what she said. I don’t know what she’s going to do, but I’ll support her in anything she desires to do.”

“Good for you.” As the two of them went over the bottom of the house, the girls were still upstairs.

He knew that there were quite a few bedrooms in the place, but couldn’t figure out what was taking them so long.

He hoped that they were getting along. He wanted everyone to love Debra as much as he did.

“We were going to catch something to eat if you want to join us. I know that she didn’t have any plans.

I think she called Mac to ask her about Penrod.

I guess he took it well that she didn’t want to go out with him. ”

“He told me that he was going to call her if she didn’t call him.

He was having second thoughts about it right after he asked her.

” Axel looked at the staircase when the two of them came down.

“They look like they’ve been up to something.

I wonder if it will bode well for the two of us.

I like saying us. It’s a great feeling to be in love with someone. ”

“I know.” They ended up going to get dinner together, and while they were waiting for food, Axel made a couple of calls.

The other firm decided that it would be one less thing they had to worry about if she would take the house off their books.

All she had to do was come into the office and sign off on the paperwork, claiming that it was hers.

“I’ll go with you in the event there are any questions. All right?”

It was settled then. Axel would go in with Debra, and he’d be at work.

Tomorrow night, they’d be able to stay in the big house, and it would be theirs.

Debra had already said she was going to put his name on the deed as well as hers, and he was happy.

They were homeowners. Mom and Dad would be pleased, too.
