Chapter Forty-Seven

Kaylee

The ride back to Kaylee’s place was quiet, and she knew Rick wasn’t happy about her volunteering to be bait, but what other choice did they have? She was scared out of her mind just thinking about it, but it was their only chance for everyone to come out of this alive.

Rick got out of the driver’s side of his car and came around the front, grabbing her open door for her. As they headed up the walkway toward the steps, Kaylee tried to breach the silence with small talk.

“So that meeting was pretty intense,” Kaylee said.

Rick grunted as they climbed the steps. “Yeah, it was, but it’s a solid endeavor. I never expected so many civilians to step up to protect this place.” Rick reached out, brushing a hair from her cheek. “And you.”

“Jolene tried to tell you.”

Rick chuckled. “So she did.”

She slipped the key into the lock, murmuring, “It’s almost like this is our last night on earth.”

“I hope not,” Rick said, laughing uneasily.

He walked through the door ahead of her, and she shut it, leaning back against it. “I’m just saying that we might not walk away from this.”

“Maybe,” he said, shrugging out of his jacket and draping it across the couch. “But I think we have a solid plan, and with townspeople watching the roads that come into town, we should have a heads-up before they get here.”

Pumpkin started chirping at them like an alarm, and she walked into the kitchen to get him a bowl of veggies, frustrated by how calm and cool Rick seemed.

After she finished placing the bowl in Pumpkin’s enclosure, she turned to Rick and dropped her jacket to the floor.

“What I’m saying is, I think that we should enjoy this time to the max. ”

“Are you giving me the last night on earth speech because you want to have sex?”

“Well, I’m trying not to come right out and say it,” she said.

Rick grinned, reaching out to wrap an arm around her waist and pull her into his body. “Kaylee, if you want me, all you have to do is kiss me. I will never say no to being with you.”

Kaylee kissed him, his words from the other night hanging in the air. If Rick was falling in love with her, what did that mean? Were they going to make it work long-distance? What was this? Just a blip in time; maybe they were trauma-bonded.

Rick picked her up in his arms and carried her into the bedroom.

As he stripped off her clothes, Kaylee thought about how she felt when she was with him, whether she was falling in love with him, too.

This constant need to be near him, to touch him, to know that he was thinking of her.

That would be love, right? She worked the buttons of his shirt, her hands gliding over the smooth muscles of his chest and down over his abs, the heat of his skin burning her.

Why had it never been like this with anyone else?

What was it about Rick that brought out all the passion, the jealousy, and the excitement?

She’d been in relationships before, none for very long, but they hadn’t thrilled her; there had been no roller coaster of emotion. Did that make this normal or abnormal?

Rick pushed her back onto the bed, leaving her legs dangling over the side.

He dropped to his knees, kissing her thighs as he left a trail along her skin, working his way closer to her exposed center.

Kaylee’s heart thundered against her breastbone like a caged bird trying to escape its enclosure.

With his mouth hovering over the juncture of her thighs, he murmured, “Where did you go?”

“Nowhere,” she whispered, running a hand through his hair. “I was just thinking.”

“Then I’m definitely doing something wrong,” he said, his mouth seeking between her folds and finding purchase.

His tongue flicked over her clit, making magic, and she leaned back against her mattress, gripping her comforter with her fists as he licked and sucked her until she was trembling with orgasm.

Rick lifted her again, and she wrapped her arms around his waist, the hard tip of his cock teasing her. Carefully, he pulled down the blankets and set her on the bed before sliding in next to her. He dragged the blankets over them and then wrapped her in his arms.

“That’s it?” Kaylee pouted, listening to his thudding heart beneath her ear.

Rick chuckled. “I’m out of condoms. I forgot to go to the store with all the danger.”

Kaylee laid her hand over his stomach, trailing her fingers down through his pubic hair and covering his dick in her hand. “That doesn’t mean we have to stop.”

Rick stilled beneath her, and she lifted her face to meet his pensive gaze. “Unless you’re on the pill, we can’t do anything else.”

Kaylee swallowed. “I am.”

“Are you sure?”

“Are you clean?” she countered, earning a startled chuckle from Rick.

“I am.”

Kaylee gripped his cock in her hand, relishing the flutter of his eyelashes as he let out a deep, guttural groan. “Then I’m sure.”

Rick rolled over on top of her, making her laugh at his eagerness as he took her mouth, his tongue plundering hers.

Kaylee continued to stroke him with one hand, opening her lips wide as he picked up her legs and spread them.

Rick broke the kiss with a gasp when she ran her thumb along the underside of his tip, covering her hand with his.

She let him go, watching him adjust himself against her.

His dark gaze met hers, sending a shiver down her spine. “You are gonna ruin me.”

“And why is that?” she murmured.

“Because I’ve never done this without a condom before.”

Kaylee reached out, running a hand over his stubbled cheek. “Neither have I.”

Rick leaned over, kissing her roughly as he pushed inside her, rocking his hips in quick succession until he was fully seated, releasing a growl that rumbled deep in his chest. Her nipples peaked, and her back bowed at the sensation of his bare cock inside her, her sensitive nipples tickled by his chest.

He didn’t give her time to adjust, his dick sliding in and out of her in a steady rhythm that left her panting with need. She held on to his shoulders as he thrust into her, pistoning in and out at a rapid pace until the pressure built inside her again, making her shake and her vision blur.

“Rick!” she cried out as her body soared, weightless and warm, holding on to him for dear life.

“Kaylee, fuck,” he groaned, his body jerking against her, and she felt the heat of his come inside her. His pacing slowed, and finally, he was still above her, staring down at her with glittering eyes.

“I knew it,” he said.

“What?”

“I’m definitely ruined.”

Kaylee laughed. “Well, it’s a good thing it’s our last night on earth.”

Rick groaned, rolling off her and onto his back next to her. He reached for her hand and squeezed it.

“You need to stop saying that.”

“I’m only being realistic,” she said, scooting closer to him. “We are about to walk into a dangerous situation, and we might not make it out alive.”

“No, we’re both gonna make it out of this.”

“How can you be so sure?”

“Because we’ve got your list to finish, and there’s no way I’m not doing this,” he said, waving his free hand over their naked bodies, “again.”

“I guess that’s as good a reason to live as any,” she said, snuggling into him.

“Kaylee?”

“Yeah?”

Rick didn’t say anything for several moments, and finally, she felt his lips brush her temple. “Nothing. It can wait.”
