Chapter 22 #4

The two women climbed out of bed, and Kara couldn’t resist giving her friend one last long hug. “Love you.”

“Love you too.”

“I’m gonna go clean your pigsty of a kitchen while you shower.”

Jen wrinkled her nose. “Yeah, sorry.”

“Don’t be. I get it. Dishes aren’t important when you feel as if your world has shattered.”

“Exactly,” Jen whispered.

“I’ll do whatever I can to help you put it back together. One piece at a time.”

Tears shone in Jen’s eyes, but she smiled. “Thanks.”

“You’re welcome. Now go, stinky butt. We’ll say hi to Penny and Bowie, and maybe Pyro if he’s home from base, pick up Arrow, and head home to stuff our faces.”

“Chaos is at Penny’s place?”

“Yup. You think he’d let me come over by myself after being glued to my side for the last couple of weeks?”

“No.”

“You’ll find that. We all have to go through some frogs to find our prince.”

Jen rolled her eyes. “Spare me from closet romantics. I thought you wrote thrillers, not romance.”

“I do…but that doesn’t mean I don’t love a good happily ever after. And, Jen, you’ll get yours. I know it.”

Her friend gave her a sad smile, then turned and headed for the bathroom.

Kara sent a quick text to Arrow, letting him know things had gone well and Jen was going home with them for dinner, then went into the kitchen to tackle the heap of dishes in the sink.

Life wasn’t fair at times. It was damn difficult.

But she had a good feeling about Jen and Edge.

They’d have their share of ups and downs; what relationship didn’t?

Though…it sounded like maybe the pilot’s “down” was more serious than most. Whatever the situation was with his ex, it was bad enough for him to avoid going after what he really wanted.

Kara just hoped that the problem could be overcome, for both his and Jen’s sakes.

* * *

Trinity Hadley had kept a close eye on her ex ever since they’d gotten divorced.

He was her soul mate, the man she was born to be with.

Just because he’d left her, that didn’t mean they couldn’t get back together, be happy again.

Their love was ordained by a higher power, and while she’d been willing to give him plenty of space and time to figure out that he’d found everything he’d ever needed in her… she was finally getting impatient.

She’d done everything for Roman during their marriage. Made his favorite meals, cleaned their apartment, welcomed him home from deployments with blow jobs and all the sex he could want—and he’d wanted a lot—and yet, he’d still divorced her.

She’d given him years to come to his senses.

Yet, he hadn’t. Which was why she’d taken a job on the base.

She needed to be way more proactive. Make him realize that they were meant to be together.

He wasn’t dating anyone, hadn’t since their divorce, and that was all the proof she needed to confirm that he still loved her.

He just needed to be brought to heel. Reminded of how good he’d had it with Trinity.

She’d been tracking him. Trinity had added him to her location-finder app toward the end of their relationship, without his knowledge. And recently, she’d discovered that he’d been showing too much interest in another woman, which she couldn’t allow.

There hadn’t been anyone to worry about…until now.

Jennifer.

The name was as boring as this random woman had to be. Trinity was worth ten of that bitch. She just had to remind Roman.

Along with the app that showed his location at all times, she’d also put a handy bit of software on his phone, when she’d started getting uneasy vibes that he was pulling away. A program that let her see who he was talking to. Which was how she knew he hadn’t dated anyone since their separation.

The texts and calls he’d sent this other woman were numerous, and they made it very clear he was interested, which was completely fucking unacceptable!

They were all mushy and gentle, the same way Roman had talked to her when they’d first started going out.

The mysterious Jen didn’t text him back, but Trinity was sure it was only a matter of time.

Because who could resist her Roman? He was handsome, kind, a real-life hero.

And he was hers.

She wouldn’t condone anyone cheating on her, especially not with some bitch named Jennifer. She needed to find out as much as she could about this woman, find out all her secrets. Then use them against her and Roman.

She couldn’t have him.

If Roman persisted in trying to pursue the bitch, he’d find that Trinity was done playing. She’d ruin them both. And in the end, if Roman still refused to see what was right in front of his face…she’d make sure he’d never see anyone, ever again.

Period.
