Epilogue
Kasimir~
The humming in my head was louder than it’d ever been, and I didn’t know how to stop it. Even the sounds of beeping machines and the strong scent of bleach couldn’t distract me from how loud the melody was playing inside my head.
Zoya’s house.
Yuri had called me right away, but by the time that I’d gotten to the house, it’d been swarming with police cars, and two ambulances had been parked right in front.
Unable to function, Yuri had called Viktor, and my brother had been the one to approach the police to ask them what was going on.
Luckily, we had quite a few cops on our payroll that Viktor had been told about a possible robbery gone bad, and he’d sat with me while Zoya and her mother had been taken to the hospital, both suffering from gunshot wounds and an obvious beating.
Now, hours later, I was sitting in Zoya’s hospital room, watching her as she recovered from surgery, and that was another thing that I had to thank my brother for.
Normally, no one would be allowed inside her room while so fresh out of undergoing an operation, but I wasn’t just anybody, and my brother had made sure to remind the hospital staff of that.
As for the police, they couldn’t question Zoya until she came to, but I was going to be here to make sure that I got the details first. There was no way that I was going to allow the police to arrest whoever had done this to her, and the hell that I was going to unleash was going to be unlike anything that anyone’s ever seen before.
I also didn’t know how I was going to tell her that her mother hadn’t made it.
Despite how they’d been at odds, I knew that Zoya loved her mother, and I knew that the news was going to crush her.
She’d already lost her uncle, and her grandparents were in Russia, so she had no one left when you considered that her father was a non-factor.
She was going to wake up feeling alone in the world, and I wasn’t sure how I was going to be able to keep from burning the entire place to the ground.
Not only had someone hurt her physically, but they’d left a gaping hole in her heart that she was never going to be able to fix.
While I could withstand a lot, Zoya feeling crushed and unhappy was not something that I was going to be able to handle well.
The humming also got louder every time that she whimpered in her drug-induced sleep.
Even without the gunshot wound, Zoya had been beaten enough that they would have administered pain medication anyway.
She had three broken fingers, four cracked ribs, numerous cuts and lacerations, and her face had been beaten hard enough for concussion protocols.
I also wasn’t the only one in the room, waiting for Zoya to wake up. Viktor refused to leave my side, afraid that I was going to lose it, and he should be worried.
Every-fucking-one should be worried.
He had also sent his wife to go stay with her father until we got a better handle on what had happened to Zoya, because if this was personal, then I wouldn’t be the only one losing his shit all over this city.
Viktor was not about to take any chances with his wife again, and so we were both on edge until we got more details.
My father had also been informed, and I knew that he was concerned about my mental state as well, which he should be.
I’d never been in love before, and now that I knew what it felt like to have someone else have your heart in their hands, vengeance was going to be mine in a way that was going to leave a river of blood flooding all the streets.
“The wheels on the bus go round and round, round and round, round and round...the wheels on the bus go round and round, all through the town...”
I felt my brother’s hand on my shoulder, and when I looked up, he said, “We’ll find out who did this, Kasimir. I swear it.”
“She needs to be okay, Viktor,” I told him. “I will not survive it if she isn’t.”
“She’ll be fine,” he promised. “Trust me.”
All I knew was that he’d better be right.
The End.
