CHAPTER 1 #2

That's the sentence, isn't it. The building is the safest place I know. You can hear the trap closing on it.

I went back for the backup at nine.

The lobby guard wasn't the lobby guard. I want to be precise: there was a man at the desk, in the right uniform, with the right posture, and I badged through and nodded and he nodded and something in the back of my skull filed a discrepancy I was too tired to open.

He smelled like ozone, and before the thought had even found words my legs had decided for me and I was walking faster.

The parking structure is below the lobby, six levels down into the rock, concrete and sodium light and that particular dead hush garages have, and I'd parked on three because I always park on three, and I was four steps out of the stairwell with my keys in my fist when the lights on level three went out.

They didn't flicker first; they simply went, a clean rectangular bank of them dropping the far end of the structure into black, and the silence came with it — that's the part I keep coming back to, the silence — because a parking garage is never quiet, there's always the building breathing, the great ventilation hum that runs under everything, the same ocean-sound from the forty-first floor pushed down through six levels of duct, and as I stood there with my keys biting into my palm the hum cut out.

One zone. Then the next. I heard it die in stages, level by level, a descending hush rolling down the structure toward me like water finding the drain, the lights going out behind it one bank at a time, each zone surrendering its breath and its glow a half-second before the next, until the only sound left in the world was my own pulse and the only light was the green of the exit sign forty feet away, and then that flickered too, and held, and turned everything the color of something underwater and not breathing.

I should run, I thought, with the clean clinical calm of a person whose body has already started running, and that's when I saw the figure between me and the exit sign.

It was a woman, I think. It was shaped like a woman, in the dim, except the shape was wrong at the edges, a soft visual nausea, like a photograph slightly out of register, like two pictures of a person almost on top of each other, and when I looked straight at her she steadied into someone perfectly ordinary, a woman in a coat, and when I looked a half-degree off she came apart again, and the ozone smell rolled toward me thick enough to taste, ozone and dead bay leaves and the sweet underneath, and every part of me that had ever been smart understood at once and without evidence that this was the thing that had touched Sable, that it was here for me, that I had refused to sign and so the smile in Preston's office had simply sent the problem somewhere it could be solved.

I didn't scream. I'd like to tell you that's courage.

It's just that screaming isn't on the menu when you can't get a full breath.

I backed toward my car, keys out, thumbing for the panic button, the only weapon I had, an alarm and a horn and a lock, and I thought, with a clarity I'd be proud of if it hadn't been so useless, this is what it is to be a clause someone needs deleted, and the shape between me and the exit took a step that didn't quite work as a step, and behind me, up the ramp, an engine.

A bike. Low and heavy and very fast, no headlight, then headlight, a single hard white beam swinging down the ramp and across the concrete and pinning the shape in the doorway so that for one ugly frozen second I saw her clearly, both versions of her at once, and she flinched from the light like it cost her, and the bike came between us sideways in a controlled scream of rubber, blacked-out and enormous, and the rider put a boot down and killed the engine and the silence rushed back in but it was a different silence now, his silence, and he didn't even look at me.

He looked at her.

He was huge. That's the first stupid useless thing my brain reported.

Tall, built heavy through the shoulders under a leather cut, fair, ash-blond going silver at the temples, and absolutely, unnervingly still, the kind of still that isn't calm, the kind of still a thing goes right before it does something, and his eyes in the green light had gone wide and black and wrong, all pupil, and he was looking at the woman-shape the way you look at a fire that's already in the walls.

"Ashwell sent you," he said, the words aimed past me at the shape, level and toneless. "You're early. She'll be displeased."

The shape said something I didn't hear in a language I didn't have, and the air went tight, that pressure again, that lightning-with-no-lightning, and the big man moved — except I couldn't have told you what he did, that's the truth of it, one instant the pressure was building and the next it had broken against him like a wave on a piling and the shape was gone, just gone, back through the dead exit door into the stairwell with a sound like indrawn breath, and he let her go, he didn't chase, he turned, finally, and looked at me.

And I, because I am who I am, because the only thing I have ever known how to do when I'm this frightened is talk, said, "Whoever you are, you're trespassing on private property, the police are already on their way, and if you so much as—"

"Sloane Mercer. " He stated it the way he'd stated everything else, with no upward lilt at the end, as if my name were a fact already entered into evidence.

Nobody asked me questions tonight; everybody already knew.

He said my name the way you read a name off a tag on something you've been sent to collect.

His voice was low and unhurried and it did something at the very bottom of it, under the words, a sound more than a sound, a vibration I felt in my sternum before I understood I was hearing it. "Senior associate. Halloran Thorne. You read a clause you weren't supposed to read."

"I want to know who you are," I said, and my voice held, I'll give it that, my voice held even though my hands had started shaking around Ruth's pen, which I'd taken out of my bag at some point without deciding to and was simply holding now, the cold steel barrel the one solid thing in a garage that had stopped obeying any rule I knew.

"I want a name, and a reason, and I want them in that order. "

He came off the bike. He didn't hurry. His lips moved on something I almost missed, a number, a tally of the doors around us, and then he was standing in front of me, and he was a wall, gun oil and cedar and a heat coming off him that I could feel a foot away in the cold concrete, a wrong amount of heat, a fever-warmth, and his black-blown eyes went over my face once, fast and total, the way I read a contract, and whatever he found there made the line of his mouth go grim.

"You called the police," he said. "There are no police coming.

The man at your lobby desk isn't your guard.

The lights aren't out. They're off. The thing in that doorway will be back with two more inside four minutes, and you've got a panic button and a steel pen, and you think this is a negotiation.

" Something almost moved across his face, and it was worse than pity because it was recognition, one careful reader clocking another.

"It stopped being one yesterday, the second you said no on the record. That's the part you missed."

"Then what am I," I said.

He told me.

He didn't soften it, and I think that's the thing I'd come to understand about him much later, that in all of it he never softened the part that would keep me alive, only the part that would keep me.

The exit sign hummed green between us. The ventilation didn't breathe.

Six levels of dead concrete sat over our heads like a closed lid, and the big still man with the fire in his eyes looked at me holding my grandmother's pen against the dark like it was anything at all, and gave me the only honest assessment I'd been handed all day.

"You're already dead, Counselor," he said. "Decide if you want to stay that way."
