CHAPTER 28 #2
A flashlight moved across the tunnel.
Dust filled the air.
Monica lay on the ground.
Nesha pressed against her chest.
Karen counted compressions.
Serena prepared another injection.
Dymond sat against the wall holding her side.
Alive.
I crawled toward Nesha.
“Let me help.”
“Her heart stopped.”
Karen moved aside.
I took over compressions.
Monica’s body remained still.
The artificial version of her had been accepted by the system.
But the woman Nesha wanted was dying in front of us.
“Come on,” I whispered.
I pressed harder.
“You didn’t do all that just to die now.”
No pulse.
Nesha grabbed her mother’s hand.
“Momma, please.”
Nothing.
“Please don’t leave me again.”
Monica coughed.
A weak breath entered her lungs.
Nesha froze.
Then Monica coughed again.
Her eyes opened.
“Stop… yelling.”
Nesha laughed and cried at the same time.
“You came back.”
Monica looked at her daughter.
“So did you.”
Serena checked her pulse.
“We need medical help.”
The tunnel sloped upward.
Emergency lights appeared ahead.
We carried Monica toward them.
Behind us, Circle House One burned beneath Washington.
The original key remained active in Dymond’s hand.
The eleven Carter Houses displayed one by one.
CLOSED
CHILDREN RELEASED
REGISTRY ERASED
FOUNDER ACCESS TERMINATED
Every location shut down.
Every heir profile disappeared.
The Circle was dead.
Or as dead as something built to survive could become.
We reached the surface inside an underground parking garage three blocks from the foundation.
Fire engines surrounded the area.
Federal agents moved toward the collapsed building.
News helicopters circled above.
Serena called her medical team.
Dymond leaned against a concrete column.
I stood beside her.
“You still alive?”
“Barely.”
“That seems to be our family condition.”
She looked toward Monica and Nesha.
“Only two were allowed to leave.”
“All three did.”
“Four, if you count the copy.”
I looked at the original key.
The screen displayed one final status.
GUARDIAN: MONICA REED
“Her pattern is still inside the system.”
“The system is gone.”
“Are you sure?”
Before Dymond could answer, the key spoke in Monica’s voice.
“Keyshia.”
Nesha heard it.
Everybody stopped.
The voice came again.
“Do not destroy the key.”
The real Monica stared at the device.
“I didn’t say that.”
Meech connected through the damaged network.
“Something survived.”
The screen changed.
A final server appeared.
Not in Washington.
Not at any Carter House.
Louisville.
The location sat directly beneath my beauty supply store.
BACKUP GUARDIAN ACTIVE
CARTER EMPIRE RECOVERY AVAILABLE
A question appeared.
RESTORE EMPIRE?
Two options waited beneath it.
YES
NO
My blood opened the empire.
My choice liquidated it.
Now the last surviving piece asked whether I wanted it back.
Eight hundred million dollars was gone.
The Circle was exposed.
But the system beneath my store still controlled accounts nobody had found.
The screen displayed the balance.
$92,000,000
Dymond looked at me.
“Ninety-two million.”
Serena stepped closer.
“That’s the private reserve.”
“The money you said didn’t exist?”
“I said it wasn’t money.”
“You lie like the rest of us.”
“It was intended to finance the heirs after the public reserve disappeared.”
Nesha looked at the real Monica.
“Did you know?”
“No.”
The digital copy answered through the key.
“I did.”
Two Monicas.
One alive.
One trapped inside the last piece of the empire.
The recovery option waited.
YES
NO
Dymond looked at me.
“What are you going to choose?”
I thought about my destroyed store.
My children without a home.
The twenty-three children from Carter House.
The hundreds released across the country with nowhere safe to go.
Money had started all of this.
Money had paid cops.
Bought judges.
Built prisons for children.
But money could also build homes.
Hire attorneys.
Pay doctors.
Give every stolen child a future the Circle didn’t choose.
I pressed YES.
Everyone stared at me.
Nesha’s mouth fell open.
“You restored the empire?”
“No.”
The system requested a name.
NEW ORGANIZATION
I entered it.
THE CARTER FOUNDATION
The ninety-two million dollars transferred.
Not to me.
Not to Dymond.
Not to any private account.
To a trust for every child released from the twelve Carter Houses.
The screen asked for a mission.
I typed:
EVERY CHILD DESERVES A FUTURE THEY CHOOSE.
The key flashed.
EMPIRE RECOVERY TERMINATED
CARTER FOUNDATION ACTIVE
The original key unlocked.
Its gold casing opened.
Inside was nothing but a small memory chip.
Dymond removed it.
“What happens if we destroy this?”
“The digital Monica disappears,” Meech said.
Nesha looked at her mother.
Then at the device carrying her voice.
The real Monica reached for the chip.
“Destroy it.”
Nesha stared at her.
“That’s part of you.”
“No.”
Monica closed Nesha’s fingers around it.
“That’s the part of me the Circle copied.”
She touched her daughter’s face.
“This is the part that chose to come back.”
Nesha handed the chip to me.
I placed it on the concrete floor.
Then crushed it beneath my shoe.
The device went dark.
For the first time in forty years, no Carter system was waiting for an order.
No digital ghost remained.
No empire needed a key.
Only a foundation needed a purpose.
And that purpose belonged to the children.
Sirens surrounded us.
Federal agents entered the garage with weapons raised.
“Hands where we can see them!”
I raised mine.
Dymond did the same.
Nesha remained beside Monica.
Serena stepped in front of all of us.
A woman wearing an FBI jacket approached.
“Keyshia Carter?”
“Yes.”
“You’re being taken into federal custody.”
“For what?”
“Murder, destruction of federal property, unlawful access to classified systems, and conspiracy.”
Dymond laughed weakly.
“We saved sixteen hundred children.”
The agent didn’t smile.
“You also exposed intelligence operations in eleven countries.”
“Operations trafficking children,” I said.
“That will be determined in court.”
She placed cuffs around my wrists.
After everything we had done, the government still wanted somebody to blame.
I looked toward my family.
Dymond was cuffed.
Serena was cuffed.
Karen was cuffed.
Nesha watched police place her wounded mother under guard.
Nobody fought.
The truth was public.
The children were free.
The empire was gone.
Now we had to survive what came after.
As the agents led me toward the elevator, the FBI woman leaned close.
“Your children are safe in Atlanta.”
I stopped.
“How do you know where they are?”
She looked at me.
“Because Rome Carter was arrested forty minutes ago.”
“For what?”
“Kidnapping.”
“He was protecting them.”
“That isn’t what he told us.”
My stomach tightened.
“What did he say?”
The agent handed me a printed statement.
Rome’s signature appeared at the bottom.
I read the first line.
I, ROME CARTER, CONFESS THAT KEYSHIA CARTER ORDERED ME TO REMOVE JAYCE AND AMAYA CARTER FROM FEDERAL CUSTODY.
I looked up.
“He would never write this.”
“He didn’t.”
The agent removed her badge.
Beneath it was a silver circle.
She smiled.
“Monica’s backup wasn’t the only thing that survived.”
