27. Knight

Chapter Twenty-Seven

KNIGHT

To be perfectly honest, I was having a mental breakdown, sitting in my office with a large hunk of metal around my finger while she slept in my arms.

My wife. She was actually going to be my wife.

How had that happened? I still didn’t understand unless she had a serious concussion.

The doctor would tell us how she was, head to toe.

Was she okay? Should she be this tired after everything she’d been through?

I wasn’t. I wanted to break something into pieces or touch her hair.

Touching her was more tempting. So much.

She’d been in my room. She saw the wreck of burned and twisted metal that she’d pulled me out of, not to mention the twenty dollars.

At some point, she was going to figure out what I was, who I was, and then she’d kill me.

Maybe she’d have her mother do it. Did Trix actually think her mother was a threat to my life?

That seemed unlikely, but something had sent her over the edge into marriage territory. To me.

I stared down at her sleeping face like a creepy stalker, but she’d told me to hold her as long as she slept.

And she’d made me her fiancé. So that’s what I was, ergo I could stare at her all day and night, and it would be normal.

Not normal normal, but that wasn’t possible for me, so we’d go with semi-normal.

I needed to explain things, tell her that I wasn’t a stable carthorse, but a fifth generational super serum with recent upgrades and corresponding psychopathy.

But would a psychopath tell his obsession about his psychopathy?

I couldn’t do it, not if she needed a husband. Not when she was surrounded by the dangerous and deadly. Not when she needed my crackers. I’d tell her before we got married. No way we’d actually go through the Chapel of Love drive-through after maternity shopping.

She’d have second thoughts. Of course she would.

She wasn’t insane. Unless she was, in which case I should stick around to make sure she didn’t hurt herself.

Her riding into that junkyard on my bike was hurting herself.

All those drunken sprees when she couldn’t deal with her feelings was hurting herself.

I could help her. But when the truth came out, that would hurt her.

But in the meantime, I could help her so when everything did come apart in ashes and flame, she’d be better suited to live her life the way she wanted it without the destructive impulses.

Sure.

And that wasn’t just rationalizing my own desires.

She shifted against me, and the rest of the world faded away. Whatever came next, for this moment I had the woman who’d rescued me so long ago. As long as I held her, nothing else mattered.

I felt a distant pinch in my neck and then nothing.

The end
