Chapter 34

Cormac read Daniela’s text.

I’m texting my father now. We’ll let you know if it works.

Cormac was sitting in a four-door navy sedan Micah had procured from somewhere he was sure he didn’t even want to know about. His brother must have a warehouse somewhere filled with random vehicles he used in different operations.

He, Micah and Apollo were six houses down from where Logan lived—on a quiet cul-de-sac—and because of the curve of the road they had a great view of his house without being visible or standing out.

They were parked in the driveway of someone who was out of town for the next couple of weeks on a cruise.

And their house sitter wouldn’t be back until Sunday night because according to her social media accounts, she was spending the weekend in Tampa with her bae.

People really shared too much online. But having a car almost identical to the house sitter wouldn’t look out of the ordinary to any neighbors.

The only real problem was the Feds, sitting very obviously in an SUV directly across the street from Logan’s house. It was like they didn’t care about being seen. Maybe they didn’t.

He got back to me immediately, Daniela texted a moment later. Said he’ll meet me now.

Their plan hinged on getting Logan out of his house. Daniela said if she reached out to him directly, he would know it was a trap. But if she reached out to her father and said she was worried about Julian and wanted to talk, she was convinced her father would send Logan to meet her.

She wasn’t actually going to meet with her father—or get trapped by Logan—but as long as they believed she was scared and desperate, it would get that fucker Logan out of his house long enough to screw up his world.

“Now we just wait and see if it works,” he murmured.

Two minutes later Cormac stared in horror as Logan Brown pulled out of his garage and onto the street. He actually rolled down his windows like an asshole and waved at the Feds, then sped away.

He’s on the move, Cormac texted through his horror. He hated that Daniela had been right.

That she’d known her father would sell her out and send Logan after her. Send the man who’d been telling others she’d shot Julian.

Clearly Alexander Hill missed being in power and didn’t give a shit about his son either. The old man was lucky Cormac had no idea where he was hiding out.

Because he’d gone off the grid when Julian went to the hospital and no one had been able to find him. Not even Micah. And that was saying something. He was obviously using a burner and likely staying in a safe house with no link to him.

“Let’s give it ten minutes,” Apollo said from the back seat. “Let Logan get far enough away from his house that we have time to escape if he doubles back.”

Micah simply nodded and Cormac did the same.

“How’s Silvia’s mom?” Cormac asked into the quiet. He’d been dealing with his own shit but knew Silvia’s mom had been having health issues. She was basically family at this point and would be officially once she and Apollo got married. But she’d been Berkley’s friend forever and they all loved her.

“Better.”

When that was all Apollo said, Cormac realized the topic wasn’t open for conversation at the moment. Which was fine.

“I saw Silvia’s latest video drop,” he said, hoping to make his brother smile. “The one with the cheating husband who fell in the fountain. It was hilarious.”

Apollo snickered, and just like that, the tension in the vehicle seemed to ebb immediately. “Yeah, that was a good one. I mean, they’re all good because she’s amazing, but that was top-tier.”

Silvia was a private investigator and ran an Insta page where she posted videos from her investigations.

Everyone’s faces were blurred out, locations not given, and of course no real names.

Most of the videos revolved around cheating assholes.

She did follow-ups with notes from her clients about whether they ended up divorcing or breaking up with their cheating partners.

It was husbands caught in the act more often than not, but there were a few wives cheating too.

“You guys ready?” Micah said a few minutes later. “We’ve got one shot and we’ve got to be quick.”

“Ready,” Cormac and Apollo said almost in unison.

Logan had a top-level security system. Luckily it was one that Micah had hacked before. Avoiding the cameras was trickier (Micah had opted not to hack them) so they ended up breaking in through a back window with a blind spot.

They were all gloved and masked up, and once Micah was sure there weren’t any interior cameras, they got to work.

Inside the house, they moved quickly. Micah went straight for Logan’s office while Cormac and Apollo checked the entire house. Once they were done, Cormac headed back to a generic-looking guest room.

He guessed Logan had either had this place professionally decorated or just bought a whole set from a furniture store.

“I want to put the shrine on the back of this armoire.” Cormac kept his voice pitched low as he slowly started to shift the heavy-duty armoire in the corner of the room.

It had a stack of blankets inside that had a stale smell, as if they’d been sitting there for a long time.

No way Logan ever used this thing. The house was likely cleaned often, but he doubted cleaners were going to be washing a cabinet full of blankets regularly.

And the thing was so heavy he also doubted they would move it to sweep or vacuum underneath.

Apollo opened the small bag they’d brought and started pulling out the pictures. He snorted as he took out the faux wedding picture with Daniela and Logan’s faces glued onto the original models.

“This is so over-the-top. It’s got Berkley written all over it,” Apollo snort-laughed as he held up the picture.

“That was actually Micah.” Cormac shook his head as he suppressed a smile.

“There’s something wrong with the two of them.”

“Pretty sure they say the same thing about us.”

“I think this one should be the centerpiece. Not the one of just her,” Apollo said.

“Give in to your creativity,” he said dryly as he started placing another of the pictures.

Once they were done, they stared at their handiwork using the incoming light from the street.

“Okay, I was wrong. This is fucking creepy,” Apollo whispered.

“And I hate to give Berkley too much credit because of her damn ego but holy shit, this is good. If he gets charged and a jury gets a load of this…” He shook his head.

“No way they’re going to believe that someone broke in here and did this. No matter what he says.”

“They’ll want to lock him up for this alone.” Cormac knew this wasn’t actually Logan’s shrine, but he wanted to throttle him all the same.

They’d added some pictures of Daniela with her eyes cut out, and big bold letters said MINE across the collage of images in blood red. The picture with her and Greg Temple—with a red slash through Greg’s face—was also in there. And then they’d added a recent cutout from a news report.

Berkley (because of course it was her idea) had highlighted the line about Temple being murdered and added a smiley face sticker next to it. Cormac had initially thought it might be cheesy, but looking at it…nope. It fit with the serial killer vibe of this whole collage.

Lights suddenly flashed across the blinds, illuminating the room for a moment. They froze, but just as quickly the light was gone.

“Just a neighbor pulling in next door,” Apollo said as he peered through the blinds.

Cormac’s heart rate had kicked up. “We need to get out of here anyway. He’ll only wait for her for so long before he realizes she’s not coming.”

They’d done what they’d come to do—planted evidence the Feds would hopefully be able to use against Logan.

If not, Cormac would take care of him one way or another.
