These may not sound like anything much, but they are famous in my family. In fact, there have almost been fights over who gets some. They are seriously that good. I have been threatened when they weren’t made for family get-togethers. Well, threatened might be a strong word, but it was close to it!

This makes enough appetizers for at least probably ten people to have a couple each, though to be honest it could easily be eaten by four because they’re that good.

INGREDIENTS:

⒈/⒉ lb margarine

⒈/⒉ cup mayonnaise

1 clove garlic, chopped

1 4-ounce can of mild chopped green chilies

1 lb (2 cups) grated Monterey Jack Cheese

2 baguettes, sliced

DIRECTIONS:

Combine well and chill in the fridge overnight.

Spread on slices of baguette.

Put slices on a cookie sheet and broil until cheese is melted.

NOTES:

This recipe is often doubled. If you think it won’t go fast, you’re very wrong. I’ve almost lost fingers passing these out.

Yes, margarine. I don’t make the rules, but it’s always been margarine for this recipe. The margarine needs to be at room temperature for mixing. This is not a place where one can substitute for Miracle Whip. Just no. Grate the cheese yourself. It matters.

My family has sometimes made a batch with bacon bits instead of the chiles for kids who don’t like them.

I’ve also been known to take leftover mix (it’s only leftover when you run out of baguettes) and put it on top of boneless, skinless chicken breasts and cook them in the oven. Yummy, cheesy goodness right there.
